Rebuttal Showdown Guide for Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

Rebuttal Showdown Guide

Overview

Are you finally ready to learn how to actually play the Rebuttal Showdown instead of slashing the arguments randomly? Maybe you’re actually stuck in one? After being completely frustrated with this I decided to do some research and testing, in which resulting in this unnecessarily large spoiler-free guide for such a small game element. Enjoy!

Explanation And Simple Tips

Even though there’s like only one Rebuttal Showdown on mean difficulty that requires to learn how to play them, it’s still more fun to know what to do rather than smash buttons randomly.

If you, by any chance, have literally no idea what you’re supposed to do in these, here’s a bit of an explanation:

Simply explained: Slash the arguments, wait, slash some more, and use the Truth Blade at the correct part.

Cut the arguments horizontally or vertically, the opposite of which way they are displayed. You can do diagonal, too.

You have limited number of cuts, displayed in the bottom-right corner. One cut isn’t necessarily enough to destroy one argument.

Wait for more arguments to appear before using your precious cuts.

Sometimes ignoring an argument might save you from taking unnecessary damage. Especially the highlighted ones.

Remember: it’s not so much about speed, but timing.

If this isn’t enough to get you through the Rebuttal Showdowns, let me tell you some more.

Tip: Buy Skills

If you’re currently NOT in the middle of the trial, here’s one simple way to make Rebuttal Showdown easier:

Use Hope Crystals to buy the ‘Fine Sword’ skill from Usami’s Rewards.

‘Excellent Blade’ might be of help too, it’s just not as effective. These two skills do not stack though. There’s no point in getting the ‘Excellent Blade’ if you can get the ‘Fine Sword’.

Also skill ‘Moodmaker’ affects Rebuttal Showdowns, but I don’t think it’ll help too much, maybe you should use your Hope Crystals for something more useful.

Tip: Combo

There’s still a chance that you’re playing with the mean/mean difficulty, didn’t get the skill previously mentioned, and can’t get it now, because someone keeps shouting at you, so you’re in a serious pinch right now.

The most important thing to learn about Rebuttal Showdowns to get skilled in them is the combo system.

When you slice twice in one direction, then once in the opposite direction, your last slice deals double the damage to the arguments.

Try for example: slice twice from above, then once from below. [Press: down, down, up]

Ah, but you shouldn’t maybe use the double damage to destroy the argument, some of the damage you deal might go to waste, you know.

Here, try it like this: slice from above (at least twice) until an argument gets destroyed, then below when the new argument appears, using the double damage to damage an argument for the first time.

Unfortunately you cannot continue the combo with simply pressing twice up, twice down, twice up, twice down and so on, but pressing everything three times should do the trick. Since after the double damage you just need to start a new combo for the double damage. You can start it from any direction though.

Remember to pay attention to the directions you need to cut from. If the text is displayed vertically, cut from left or right. If it’s displayed horizontally, cut from below or above.

About Truth Blades

To find the time to choose correct Truth Blade might be a bit difficult, but surely you can manage, just like in Nonstop Debate. There’s some good time to choose the correct blade at the start of the Rebuttal Showdown when loading the blades.

Of course, you can’t really tell which one it is at this point, but we all make mistakes on these trials, don’t be afraid to make them here either.

Good luck!
