Overview
Since there is no steamworkshop for L4D1, I thought I’d put together the next best thing, by writing a detailed guide with custom campaigns I have updated from many authors, improving the originals by fixing errors, and providing support for them. There are links and details to each one. Guide will be updated until I have uploaded all 100+ campaigns.
Purpose
The purpose of this guide is to put together a massive database of almost all known custom L4D1 campaigns due to a lack of a L4D1 workshop. And even if there was a workshop, many map authors are no longer active or even have/play the game anymore unfortunately. But for those of us that still do, this will be a treat. You may be thinking, what’s the point of this database since you can download campaigns on various webpages? Well, the difference is that I have done updates and fixes to many campaigns that you won’t find anywhere else until I post it. I originally did this only for my clan so we could have better maps to play, but I thought it would be better if what remains of the L4D1 community have access to it as well, so I am making it public. And plus, this information rightfully belongs on Steam since this is a Steam game.
This guide will be updated on a regular basis. Please read the intro below to see what this is about.
Introduction and what you should know.
This guide will provide information on almost every custom campaign ever made for Left 4 Dead. There are multiple download mirrors for each campaign. You only need to download it from one mirror. The main difference with these campaigns here and other websites, is that the campaigns on this page have all of the following:
- 1) Any missing/corrupt textures have been restored.
- 2) Any missing/corrupt models have been fixed.
- 3) Any nav meshes related errors and problems have been fixed.
- 4) Any outdated string tables have been updated.
- 5) Any music that it supposed to play but didn’t before, now plays perfectly.
- 6) Any sound effect that was missing or didn’t play before has been restored/fixed.
- 7) Any incorrectly formatted files has been fixed to avoid errors.
- 8) Any file that is not used by the campaign has been removed to make the VPK as small as possible.
- 9) All campaigns now have their name in the scoreboard (when you press tab in game).
- 10) Any campaign that didn’t display or have a poster now has one (as well as an addon image).
- 11) And the best part of all, campaigns will NOT conflict with each other. So that means you can have all of them installed at the same time!
- 12) As a little bonus, at least one custom Tank has been added to each campaign that you can fight (even on single player mode) and some have additional themes. The remaining bosses can only be fought online on my Custom Map Database Server.
I have done all the above for every known campaign for L4D. If you don’t see one below, don’t worry, I am still uploading them. I have over 100 campaigns left to upload, so please be patient.
To install a custom campaign, fisrt, make sure your game is not running. Then all you have to do is place its VPK file in your L4D addons folder. When you run the game again, you’ll be able to select it by going to the Addon campaign option under The Sacrifice. If you plan to play it with some friends, you must all have the same version, or it will not work properly.
I have also made a public server where anyone can play these campaigns. You can vote to choose one in-game by typing !maps in the chat window. And even play as additional survivors of infected.
Note 1: You will need one small mod installed to make the names of the campaigns display properly, it will also add their names to the scoreboard when you press tab. Get it from{LINK REMOVED} this link (Current version: 0.1)
Note 2: Before you download any of these campaigns, make sure you remove the older versions you have installed first! This way, you won’t have any conflicts. If you are not sure, send me a message with a screenshot of your “addons” folder and I’ll let you know which ones you need to remove.
Note 3: Any campaign that only officially supports Coop mode, can work in Versus mode, but you won’t see the infected ladders. Keep that in mind. And any campaign that only officially supports Versus mode, should work fine in Coop mode. Maps that only support Survival mode will be posted in another section.
Note 4: If you want to install these campaigns on your server, use the server version of the mission file that I’ve provided inside the VPK.
Remeber, this guide is still a work in progress. As mentioned above I have a lot of campaigns to upload with the updates I’ve made to them. The campaigns are done, I just need to upload them all, but I also need to upload images for them, so that may take me a while. I’ll try to upload at least 10 a month until they are all uploaded.
Alternate Normal Campaigns
I’ll start with posting 11 of them that have the updates and features mentioned in the intro of this guide. The remaining 9 will come very soon.
