How to Resist the Urge to Complain for Beat Saber

How to Resist the Urge to Complain

Overview

I thought that there were many people in the Beat Saber community who could take advice from a guide like this, so I decided to make it.

The Target Audience: Criticism vs. Complaining

There’s a big, important difference between criticism and complaining.

Criticism is, by definition, the “expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes.”

Complaining is, by definition, to “express dissatisfaction or annoyance about something.”

Now, these definitions might sound similar, because they are, but they’re not entirely identical.

Criticism is most often used with the intent of seeing something improve based on feedback. An example of this might be, “I think that the default angle of the sabers for the Index controllers is too steep.” As much as people hate their work being criticized, it is a useful tool for game developers to learn and understand what they can improve. Also, the developers are allowed to disagree with you – they’re making the game, after all.

Complaining, on the other hand, is not constructive. Typing “UPDATE BROKE MODS” on every community announcement does not help the developers. It also one of the clearest and easiest-to-recognize flags of unintelligence on the entire platform of Steam.

Waiting for an Update

During this time between updates, it might be tempting to complain about the lack of effort that is being put into Beat Saber. Some might take to the community forums, Reddit, or Twitter, to complain about the lack of updates.

Don’t be fooled!

By giving in, you are falling right into the trap of complaining! This is one of the oldest techniques to provoke complaints, though it is difficult to spot for many.

An update has released! Now what?

Wow! It would appear that Beat Saber has been updated. What a wonderful time to be alive!

“But wait, what’s this?” You might be asking yourself. “The update has broken my mods!?”

As it turns out, when Beat Saber updates, it renders mods from older versions useless. Even though you may have encountered this several times throughout your time playing Beat Saber, it still manages to surprise you when each and every update ruins your precious mods.

At this point, you may immediately be tempted to complain on the community forums. You might want to say some pretty unwholesome things to the Beat Saber developers, or accuse them of directly attacking the modding community. This is not true! You must resist the urge to complain.

Help! I’m still entitled!

If you’ve reached this phase, it might be too late. But there is still some hope!

There are many last-resort measures you can take to reduce the chance of complaining online.

#1: Wait for approximately two days
Beat Saber mod developers work pretty hard at updating mods when each update releases. Instead of complaining to the game’s developers, why don’t you go send some love to the people who are making the mods for you in the first place?

#2: Play the game… WITHOUT MODS!?
If waiting approximately two days is too much for you to handle, you can always try playing Beat Saber without any mods! The word “vanilla” sparks a hateful reaction in many, but, as it turns out, playing Beat Saber normally isn’t so bad!

#3: Practice mindfulness
Sometimes, it can be hard to see your own flaws. I recommend meditating for 15 minutes every night, to reflect on what led you to becoming such an entitled piece of ♥♥♥♥.

Conclusion

Stop complaining. The developers aren’t responsible for mods, and have no obligation to support them. Supporting custom songs in the first place is a dangerous legal grey area.

Maybe take a step back and appreciate the fact that you, in the 2.2% minority of Steam users with VR headsets, are able to experience this incredible game in the first place.
