Overview
If you have a profile, on which you worked for hours and ending up starting the game and see that it’s corrupted, you will probably be upset. Here you can check how you can recover it.
Introduction
You have a corrupted Profile and don’t know how to recover it? Well, that was my problem too. So here is how to fix it!
Note that I am german, so please do not dislike this post just because of some grammar or spelling mistakes.
Also, there is no guarantee that it will work for you. It worked for me but that actually means nothing at all.
Spotting the Save file
First, you go to your C: folder, then you go to the Program Files (x86) and then to the Steam folder. Then you go to userdata and then on the folder with your Steam ID. After that, you go to the folder with the Game ID (in this Case, it’s 632360 for Risk of Rain 2). Next, you go to remote -> UserProfiles and then you should see one file (if you have just one Profile) oder more than one file (if you have more than one Profile).
Basically the Path is C:Program Files (x86)SteamuserdataX632360remoteUserProfiles
(X stands for the folder with your Steam ID)
Here is an example for two different Profiles:
Spotting the RIGHT Save file
If you have just one file, you should read that part too!
So, if you have more than one file, it’s easier to spot the right file then you think. But note that the file has a different name than the Profile name. The easiest way is to go through every file and look for signs of corruption. Open the files with a text editor, like Notepad++ oder the normal Windows editor.
Here is an example for a normal Save File:
If you open it with Notepad++, it will look like this:
(Note that this one line will have like 75,000 columns)
If you open it with Editor, it will look like this:
You can choose what is better for you.
Once you are in the text editor, you will probably see it instantly, if it’s corrupted or not.
If it’s not, everything should look like the pictures above.
If it is, there should be a huge part consisting of NUL NUL NUL NUL NUL (in Notepad++).
In the Editor, I don’t know what it looks like, and unfortunately I have no picture of both variants (being corrupted).
Fixing the Save file
The main thing about the fixing is cutting the weird-looking part out. You are looking for the beginning of this part, and highlight it by pressing Ctrl + Shift + RightArrowKey until you reach the end. Then you just cut it out. Then you jump to (or stay at) the position of the cut and check whether there are any mistakes.
It should not look like this:
It should look like this:
(Note that this is just an example of a position of the cut, your position can be somewhere else. Also, the wrong characters at the position can vary.)
Some tips
That’s basically it! If you want to recover your profile faster in the future, you just can manually create a backup folder on your desktop or something, in which you copy your game file(s) after every time you play, so if the file(s) should corrupt another time, you just have to copy them from your backup folder into the real Profile folder.
If anyone will ever find this helpful, I would appreciate a like or a comment. Thank you!
