An ACTUAL guide on how to play as Risk of rain 2’s most Risky (haha original joke its funny i know) character.
Introduction: what do plant do?
hey. if your reading this guide, you’ve probably just unlocked rex, tried him out, realized 2 of his abilities cost health, then subsequently threw this poor plant in the bin, writing him off as someone you’ll never play, and then went back to playing huntress. and i wouldn’t blame you. that’s what i did too. but if you look beyond the surface, rex is actually kinda busted, and actually INCREDIBLY fun to play.
Part one: preparation to play the plant.
First objective: get rex his alt skin. no questions. the alt skin, “smoothie” is a straight upgrade both visually, and actually gives as 20% boost to his epicness stat, so buckle up your… buckles, crank that difficulty up to monsoon, and obliterate ASAP. thats it., no more preparation. its time to play plant.
Part 2: What makes him unique, and how do i use it?
great question, title! rex is suprisingly unique for how little he seems to stand out at first. quick recap of all the other characters Shtick: commando plays call of duty, huntress has aim assist turned up to 500000%, MUL-T has pockets and a super arm for different primaries, artificer has the cape feather from mario world with the downside of sucking absolute balls (sometimes),mercenary can zoom but cant do ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ outside of melee range (if you take sliced winds your are actualy braindead) and gains the unique ability to die… a lot, loader is actually spiderman, and acrid spits on things and they die from disease (also m1 canceling is stupid). so what does rex have? risk vs reward. 3 of his abilities cost a percentage of your max health to use, and 3 of them heal rex. on top of that, the moves that do hurt rex give MASSIVE benefits for pulling them off. m2 has the HIGHEST single target dps IN THE GAME, and has NO COOLDOWN (other than the universal 0.5 sec cooldown). this is where a majority of your damage is coming from. his utility skill (his alternate one) heals you 10% hp for each enemy hit, and launches them to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stars. and his special rounds up all enemies in a radius and pulls them together, healing you in the process. seems like a balanced character right? a good balance of risk and rewa- no. well, you would be right, if you’d have asked me a few months ago. but its not. remember his self damage? y’know, the only thing that keeps his disadvantage state reasonable, and subsequently power in check, and stops him from breaking the balance of the game entirely? yeah, thats cool. well, ever since hidden realms, nobody ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cares.
part 3 kill everything
prior to hidden realms, rex was kinda bad. hopoo must have known pre-buff rex mains were very depressed human beings (i am living evidence to that) so they decided to buff rex’s m1, which buffed the lousy speed of the syringes,but more importantly, they DOUBLED the healing it gives from 30% to 60%, and subsequently made it so rex could straight up negate his entire downside without a single item. naturally after the buffs a flood of new rex mains swarmed in, and me and the other rex mains had to flee into hiding. (i haven’t seen my family in 2 months.) now you can start to see the problem. rex’s new m1 basically made it so that loosing health didnt matter in the slightest, and although its fun as hell, i dont know if its good for the balance of the game. but that’s a topic for another day. for now, just grab your alt utility, leave that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of an alt m2 at the door, and just exist in your enemies general direction. they’ll be dead before you know it.

for now, thats it. i have no doubt that hopoo will try to “rebalance” rex in artifacts 2.0 (ill update this guide in accordance), but until then, enjoy your essentially free runs.
