Ravenfield and Her Bots: An Introduction And Overview:
Over the course of the many hours I’ve played, I’ve noticed the bots have a lot of quirks some people may not know about. This guide will be a run-down of bots and all of the things they can do that I’ve seen as a player with way too many hours in the game.
Bots and the brain damage they may or may not have
Bots and the brain damage they may or may not have
So the bots. They are pretty useful teammates and enemies as they are frankly all you have to kill. But there are a few problems with them, and even some things I wouldn’t call problems but quirks.
A requirement for usage of their weapons would be the Disable Friendly Fire mutator available on the steam workshop, just look it up and add it and your life will be made so much easier. Therefore the bots cannot kill you with their idiocy, but can kill enemies. Perfection.
However for those of you who do not use Mutators, heed the following;
So, first off: Never, ever, under any circumstances, give the bots anything that does AOE (Area Of Effect), Explosive, or “OP” weapons (by design). They will not use them to kill tanks or aircraft of large groups of enemies. They will use them to kill you, and you only. If you’re anywhere near a guy with a DAGGER for example, and one other enemy guy is off in the distance, you will soon find yourself staring at the weapons selection screen and the map telling you what’s going on as if you didn’t just see it happen.
Next up: Bots never use turrets right! Especially the stock (usual, non-modded) turrets. The WIRE guided missile launcher AKA the anti-tank gun is a good example. It’s the same problem as before, they will either miss or end up killing you with it somehow, someway.
Worth mentioning: The bots are clearly masochists, because even if you shoot them and you are on their team, they will either not care or just stare at you. Especially if you shot someone in the vehicle they are in or were getting in. They will just watch you, silently judging you forever…until you all go right off a cliff.
Another to note: Bots tend to go for the head no matter what it is, especially if you are on the same team. This is by design I believe, they will instead of aiming center mass tack the head if they can, hitting you anywhere else is an accident really. If you have teammates behind you shooting and you stand up from crawling or crouching, expect a clean headshot. So, try to use the Q and E leaning system if you can, because they will just shoot you in the head anyways, so protect yourself from the accidental body shots that might kill you, plus it makes you a smaller target overall.
Finally (for now I may update this if it gets popular enough): Bots. Love. The. Attack. Helicopter. Missile. Launcher. They will spam that thing all of the time. If you plan on having any fun at all, shoot these down as soon as you can, even if on your team and they are firing at you. They will fire near or at you, and it will kill you. This is very clear on maps like the Island and the Mountain Range. If you can, avoid where they are as friendly fire is something these bots get taught from day one.
Player and bot commands
Player Imput in Bot choices
So, you can tell the bots what to do. I have noticed that the orders system with a squad works pretty well, but the map-based one when you are dead or press the ENTER key is weird. If it seems odd to you too, I will try to explain.
The Command Screen
When you give them orders, let’s say you want to attack the Reef on Archipelago, they will need one of two types of commands. The little check box in the top left hand corner is important and nearly vital to using this correctly!
If you check the box (or x it or whatever you wanna say) it will set them to ALWAYS follow these orders you are giving, no matter what. This isn’t exactly true, as if they are already on their way to something else they will disregard your order and threats of court marshaling and will do whatever anyways. But bots that just spawn in will follow these to the death.
However, not clicking the box will make it so only some of them, or sometimes none, will do that command. So if you want something done on a Macro scale, you probably should use that button.
Squad Leader Kit:
Okay, so I give this a thing a bad wrap in my convos with other people, but it’s not that bad. It’s good for controlling smaller attack squads and formations with more options than just your hand waving at people and responding with a salute. I won’t go into too much depth, if anyone would like that comment and if it gets enough attention I will extend this list comparative to what people would like to see. The Squad commands got a massive overhaul, and is addressed in the next section.
Stealth, Sleuthing, and Suppressors
Stealth, Sleuthing, and Suppressors
In the recent update (22), the Stealth mode was added and tweaked. Its a mode that relies upon your ability to sneak your way around an island and complete three simple objectives: Blow up crates, blow up a vehicle, and kill a comms officer. The enemy will have randomized patrols, truck-mounted or by foot, that randomly vibe along defined roads and sometimes off those roads, as well as foot soldiers guarding the objectives.
The squad you are supplied in the beginning with, are utterly helpless. I ran a lot of tests for the sake of this guide, and I can tell you, the squad is best left in place and well hidden while you one-man-army stealth the objective. I will say however, that pure stealth is impossible in this gamemode. The bots know when you kill one of them and everyone will open fire. With that being the case, bringing the bots with you is a valid strategy if you send them in or attack with them in surprise and want them to absorb bullets.
The suppressed weapons are…weird. They sometimes work, they mostly don’t, I’d say use them if for nothing than the roleplay or for fun, but they don’t make too much of a difference when the bots can see the guy hit the ground dead.
The bots themselves are not great at detecting you sometimes, and other times they are too good at detecting you. The enemy is always spoiling for a fight, and when you are detected down comes the hammer of the entire enemy squad in the area. Of course, they are no more competent than regular bots, and can be mowed down with incredible ease if you can aim. I find it best to just eliminate the comms officer or the objective, then letting your squad engage. It is notable that your squad will not engage unless you do, they are ordered to, or they are spotted. They will also attempt to take the flag points, which doesn’t really matter, only the destruction of objectives and killing of officers does. So if you want to use them effectively, you can effectively ignore the squad kit, as anything you need to do you can do with hand signs and some pretty basic tactical knowledge.
Or of course, you can just shoot your squad and go off and be the big damn hero you are.
The best part (the conclusion)
The Conclusion
Basically, this was a pretty mediocre attempt at an overview of Ravenfield’s supporting cast. If this gets some attention, I will update this and do a lot more work, but this is mostly just for new players. if you’ve got good amounts of time in the game this won’t shock you at all.
This was updated as of update 22 on the roadmap, and will be updated as we go. This is a remake of my prior guide, which you can find on my profile.
