Overview
I’ve always found the movement to be terribly weightless and slippery, which made the game frustrating and not enjoyable for me. I’ve finally found something to remedy that, so I can at last enjoy Half-Life!
Recommended Prerequisite:
I recommend downloading and installing Notepad++[notepad-plus-plus.org]
It’s free and it’s going to help with the configuration needed for method two–but it is not needed for method one.
Method One:
This one is the simplest but you’ll need to do it every time you start the game.
- Open the console. The key bound to do so, can be changed in the controls menu.
- Type:
sv_cheats 1;sv_friction 9;
- Press enter.
- Now you can enjoy the less slippery movement!
You can change the friction value to whatever you’d like (The default value is 4). I’ve done some testing and found that the max I recommend is a value of 9 because crouching close to, or under objects, can severely slow you down when set to a value of 10 or above.
Method Two:
This one is a little harder to do but you only need to do it once (unless you uninstall Half-Life.)
- Navigate to the Half-Life installation folder. You can do this by right-clicking Half-Life in your games library; hovering over Manage, and left-clicking on Browse local files.
- Open the folder called valve.
- You should see a file named autoexec (or autoexec.cfg)
- Right-click said file and left-click on Edit with Notepad++
- Copy and paste the following into this file:
- Now, the contents of the file should look like this:
- Save and close the file. Then launch the game and enjoy Half-Life with less slippery movement!
