Overview
This is a quick guide to teach starvers how I manage not to starve in three simple steps! This guide is based on DS vanilla. You may need to change your strategy when playing RoG. In fact, you definitely will need to.
intro
The following three steps should be executed in the given order, and if necessary, repeated. This is only about hunger, finding the required resources or surviving hound waves are different stories, which I may tell another time.
Please note that in winter, the second and third steps should be delayed, since they don’t work during that season anyways. You should still be able to harvest them.
1. Hunting and Gathering
You will need some quick food to get started. There is no better instant source of food than wild crops and prey.
In this phase, you should pick all berry bushes and some carrots/mushrooms you may find along the way.
Veggies don’t cut it for long enough. If you find any lone pigmen, kill them for their meat. Follow any koalefant tracks you see, they drop plenty of meat.
Set up some traps near rabbit holes if you can spare the resources. You’ll get a morsel when you come back.
2. Farming
Once you have some food to begin with, you should invest some time and effort in a constant source of food. Farms are ideal for this.
If you haven’t killed all pigmen, beefalo and koalefants on the world yet, consider them a source of manure. Try to construct about five farms to begin with, 20 – 30 farms should be enough for anyone.
If you can, set up a birdcage to breed dragon fruit seeds. Dragon fruits can be cooked with sticks to make fine pie. You may also want to plant some pumpkins for the next step.
3. Bees, bees, bees!
Catch some bees! Wreck their hives! Make a beebox! Plant flowers around it!
If you did all of that, you should get some honey without an end from the beebox. You can use it to make bandages, or eat it raw, but a great use for them are pumpkin cookies: two fists full honey and a pumpkin make this delicious treat which fills you a decent bit and keeps you sane. Ideal for caves!
Also, you can make honey ham with honey, just use some meat and some honey in the cook pot.
