Overview
YOU MAKE YOUR MAP! This is a guide to let you in a great way to travel the vast and various worlds that Dont Starve has to offer. There is a way to get around and not get killed multiple times.So you just started playing Don’t Starve. Congrats. It is a really awesome game and I hope you play it long enough to unlock all the great secrets it has to offer, but before you just go running into everything, lets just say that there is a great method that makes it safe for you and makes it easier to reveal the majority of the map. GATHERING

So to start off Maxwell just dumped you in a new world warning you about finding something to eat. Well it safe to say he dumped you in a very food and resource abundent place. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS! If you have been playing for a while you already know you need an ax, pick axe, wood, sticks, grass, and importantly food.
Get as much food as you can/think you need (this depends on which character you are playing as), then chop a bunch of wood and gather grass ( to make lots of fires of course.) Also use that newly made pickaxe to get rocks and flint. (LEAVE THE NITRE–> it is only good for one thing in the whole game and it will only use up inventory space if you collect it. Also leave the gold, because you will be able to go back and get some later.)
TRAVELING

So now you have a pretty full inventory of all the items you need. Look on your map and see where you have ventured off to so far.
-Near the trail? If you, are good. If you aren’t if you want to try looking for it go ahead, but if you dont here is what you do. Take advantage of this fact. YOU ARE ON AN ISLAND. Basically the whole world is surrounded by water therefore you can follow the edges of the world.
Remember when you were a kid you used to darken in the edges of the coloring book picture then just color in the inside last. Thats what we are going to do. Travel along the edges not only will this help you get a feel for how big the island really is, but it will add a little safety in avoiding unwanted encounters with mods.
Pig Base

But if you dont want to use this method lets get one thing straight the best thing you want to do first when starting out is to FIND THE PIG KING. There is a video on Youtube to explain alot of the good reasons for building your first base by the pigs.With that being said Following the paths will eventually lead you to the pigs and this is and ideal place for starting your first base. Although following the edges and the paths are both great methods mixing them together every now and then is even better.
JUST BE WARY. Pigs have the possibility of turning into were pigs. So you dont want to put your base extremely close, but just close enough to run to if you are being chased.
Fire Pits

Now lets say you have now found the pig king and made a fire pit, or you found a good potential place for a base, just make another firepit. Firepits can be seen on your map and are a great way to give you a land mark where things are. This is why you collected so much wood.
So lets say you found one of the “things” or some really good stuff that you want to take with you garden knome, but just don’t have the space for it yet. Theres a solution, build a firepit or for those who want to save resources pick it up and carry it to the path way. That way when you walk back on the path you will walk right by it again and will be able to pick it up when ready.

Since you now know how to travel here are a few good tips for the future. Periodically make and leave torches along the road, if you arent Willow or its winter and you are cold, putting torches all along the road can help to set things on fire and keep you warm and traveling at night can be made easy.
When traveling, another good tip is to save your feasts for night time. Its ok if your stomach is a bit empty. When night comes you need to make a fire anyway. Why not wait till then to cook your food and eat it too. This way you can start off the day with a full stomach and continue.
TO WRAP THINGS UP
WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE
Now that you have a good base going, and you already have you science and alchemy machines, a few chests, and a fire pit, maybe even a crock pot. You have your backpack and/or Chester. You can now plan to fill in all those dark spots on the map. Maybe even fight what you have avoided in the beginning. And pretty soon you will have a full map.
