Overview
This guide will explain the update known as “Underground” or as I call it the Caves update. It will also include the “It’s not a rock” update.
1: What Update?
This update was released on May 21, it added caves into Don’t Starve. For those of you who don’t know or are new to Don’t Starve all the updates to the game aren’t “paid DLC” but are just free updates. The second caves update called the “It’s not a rock” update added some new mobs and items, which I will cover in this guide.
2: Caves?
Now what are Caves exactly? Well they are large underground sections of the Don’t Starve world. It doesn’t have the aboveground feel to it because all sounds are echoed and because of the cave walls. To get inside a cave, one must use a pickaxe to mine a Plugged Sinkhole. Inside the caves it’s permanently night therefore the Grue can attack you lest you have a torch or lantern or a natural light source. It also means that Sanity will be reduced throughout the cave. The good news is that if you die in a cave, you DONT respawn at the surface, it counts as a death. However all your items are still inside the cave and all perishable foods will turn into rot. Here’s the cave update live stream to get a good look.
3: Plants in the Caves
Inside the caves you can also find the usual plants like the saplings, grass, trees, berries and mushrooms however some plants are found exclusively in caves.
The first plant we will be looking at is the Light Flower it’s a light source that’s found in the mushtree biome. It gives off light but doesn’t once it’s bulb is picked. It will regrow in 3 days. The plant can not be moved with a shovel. When picked it gives the “Light Bulb” item.
The second plant in the caves is the Mushtree it’s like a normal tree but gives off light. When chopped it gives out 2 logs and a blue cap. It isn’t recommended to chop these down because they can’t be regrown and are one of the only sources of lights in caves.
The newest addition to the plants is the “Cave Banana Tree” they are like normal trees in the way that they can be chopped to provide 2 twigs and 1 log but they can be picked for a “Cave Banana”. The fruit will regrow in 4 days.
4: Rock related stuff
With the new update there will be natural disasters in the caves. The screen will shake and various items will drop from the ceilings. They will damage you if they fall on you. The items that can be dropped are Rocks, Flint, Red and Blue Gems, Nitre, Gold and Marble.
This thing is basically the underground rocks. They drop Rocks, Flint, Gold or Nitre when mined. They are called “Stalagmites”.
5: The Mobs
It wouldn’t be Don’t Starve if there weren’t any enemies that try to kill you. So here they are:
The first beast of the caves is the “Batilik” they are bat like creatures that also come out of the sinkhole at dusk. They have 50 health and deal 20 damage per strike. They drop Guano periodically similar to how Beefalos drop manure. When killed they drop Monster Meat, Batilik Wings or nothing at all.
The second monster of the depths is the Cave Spider they are similar to the Spider but have unique traits to it. The first being is that when it’s hit twice it will curl up intro it’s shell negating 70% of damage. They will uncurl again after a few seconds. The cave spider has 150 health and does 20 damage. When killed they will always drop monster meat and have a 50% chance to drop either a Spider Gland or Silk. They spawn from Spider Dens and Spilagmites .
The third monster is also a spider but are called Spitters instead of spitting acid at you these things spit rocks at you. The rock and their normal attack both do 20 damage. They have slightly more health than Cave Spiders at 175. All the drops are the same as the Cave Spider but they Spitters only spawn from Spilagmites.
The most hinted at mob added is the Slurtle, they are turtle and slug like creatures that eat rocks and flint. They will attack backpacks, the player and chests to get the rocks. Once in a while they will drop Slurtle Slime. If the Slurtle is lit on fire, it will curl up in it’s shell and will explode. They have 600 health and do 25 damage. If killed they will drop Slurtle Slime and a Broken Shell but sometimes will drop a Shelmet. They spawn from Slurtle Mounds
The next enemy is a rarer variant of the Slurtle called the Snurtle they spawn rarely from Slurtle Mounds. They behave exactly the same as a Slurtle but they only have 200 hp. When killed they will drop 2 Slurtle Slimes, a Broken Shell or sometimes Shell Armor.
The last mob added is the Bunnyman. They behave similarly to Pigs but will not kite but retreat during battle when injured. They will attack the player if they have meat in their inventory even if befriended. They will also attack any mob that eats meat including the Pig. If above ground they only come out at dusk. They can be befriended with a carrot. Also like the Pig they live in Bunny Hutches that look like giant carrots. They have 200 hp and do 40 points of damage. When killed they drop 2 carrots and 90% of the time drop meat and 10% of the time Bunny Puff .
This next “mob” which the first in the “It’s not a rock update is called the “Big Tentacle” it’s basically the extension of the tentacle. When attacked it will spawn a couple little tentacles that die in one hit. When killed it will go back into the hole and cause an earthquake to happen.
The next mob I will be covering is the “Beardlord” it has the same stats as a normal bunnyman but drains sanity when near. It can be befriended with a carrot. Beardlords are caused when the players sanity goes below 80. They drop 2 Beard Hairs and 1 Meat on death.
This one is a biggy. It’s called a “Rock Lobster” on day 1 its pretty small but by day 40, it reachs its maximum size. They are neutral creatures that roam in caves eating Flint or Rocks, they travel in a way like Beefalos. They can be befriended by giving them a rock related item and will fight for you. They have 1500 hp and do 60 damage. They can also hide reducing 95% of damage. They are also immune to ice. When killed they drop 2 Rocks, 1 Meat and 2 Flint.
Now this is a weird monster. Its a “Lureplant” it spawns a leafy meat and baits animals into going near it and it will kill it. The leafy meat can be harvested however. When killed they will drop a lureplant egg of sorts that can be used to replant one. However, they spawn “eyeplants” that multiply and attack you. The good news is that they only have 30 hp and only do 20 damage.
Now we will be focusing on the spawn “houses”.
The first one is the Spilagmite. They are basically just a spider den and a stalagmite combined together. The only thing that seperates them is the webbing the surrounds it. It takes 4 hits with a pickaxe to destroy.
The last thing is the Slurtle Mound. It spawns Slurtles and Snurtles. It can be destroyed but I doubt it can “rebuild” therefore limiting the amount of slurtles in the caves.
6: Turfs!
Two new turfs have been added, the Mud one and the Fungal Turf.
7: Crock Pot Foods
The only crock pot food added is the Powdercake. It requires 1 honey, 1 corn and two twigs to make. It doesn’t restore any hunger or sanity but damages you for 3 health. It spoils in 18750 days. Not joking, because everyone knows Twinkies powdercakes are the only things that last forever.
8: The Items
The first item is the Batilisk Wing when eaten raw it heals 3 health, refills 12.5 hunger but lowers sanity by 10. The cooked version heals 8 health, refills 18.75 hunger and does nothing to sanity. The raw version can be put on a drying rack to turn it into small jerky in 2 days.
The next item is the Slurtle Slime, it can be lit and will explode dealing 50 damage per one. The main purpose of the slime is to refuel the lantern. It refuels it by 9.5 per slime.
This item is called the Broken Shell it serves no purpose other then reminding you that you didn’t get any shell armor 🙁
This item is what you want to get instead of a broken shell. It’s the Snurtle Shell Armor. It absorbs 80% of damage but one can also hide in it with right-click, if hidden damage is reduced by 95%. It absorbs 1050 damage before being destroyed.
This piece of armor is called the Shelmet, it goes in the head armor slot and absorbs 90% of damage. It absorbs 750 points of damage before breaking. Fun Fact: This item shares it’s name with the Pokémon “Shelmet”.
The next item is called a Bunny Puff it’s dropped by Bunnymen and are used to craft the Fur Roll and the Bunny Hutch.
Now on to the Lightbulb it’s gotten by picking a Light Flower. It spoils after 6 days. It can be eaten for 3 health but it’s main purpose is to craft the Lantern. It can also be dropped to provide light but is not recommended because it spoils quickly. It can be used to refuel a lantern for 19.5%.
Now this is the item used be splunkers. It’s the Lantern it has a large light radius much larger then the torch and can be turned off. It’s refuelable by Slurtle Slimes and Light Bulbs. You need an Alchemy Engine to prototype it. It requires 3 twigs, 3 rope and 2 lightbulbs to craft.
Like sleeping? Well you’ll LOVE the Fur Roll. Now only does it 33 sanity but also 30 health at the cost of 75 hunger it will also restore the player to full warmth during Winter. Did I mention it can be used 3 times? You’ll need a Straw Roll and 2 Bunny Puff to craft one.
Do you like Bunnies? How about Bunnymen? Well this item will let you shelter a Bunnymen. Similar to a Pig House a Bunnymen comes out at dusk instead of day, and respawns in 4 days if killed. A Rabbit Hutch takes 4 Wood Planks, 10 Carrots and 4 Bunny Puff to craft.
This next item is the “Bat Bat” its a magic fight item that does 42 damage but leeches 6 health per hit. It will also reduce sanity by 3 per use. It has 75 uses. It is made with 5 Batilisk Wings, 2 Living Logs and 1 Purple Gem.
This next item is called “Guano” it is dropped by Batilisks in the same way Beefalos drop Manure. The guano is 1.5 more effective at being a fertilizer. You could say it’s “Super Effective”.
This item is called a “Compass” it’s main purposes is to tell which direction the character is facing, the red arrow points north. It takes 1 Gold Nugget and 1 Papyrus to craft.
This next item is the “Cave Banana from the cave tree. When raw it restores
1 Health and 12 Hunger, and rots in 10 days. When cooked it restores 3 Health and 12 Hunger, it rots in 6 days.
9: Conclusion
Wow, this guide is by far the hardest guide I have ever made. Hopefully my effort paid off and you can spleunk armed with the power of knowledge. All the images belong to the Don’t Starve wiki and the video is the caves live stream which I do not own. The information was also gotten from the Don’t Starve WIki.
All in all I hope you, the reader, enjoyed this guide and I would love if you would check out some of my other guides!
