Don’t Starve Adventure Guide

Overview

This is a guide to help people who are struggling with adventure mode. I’ll be going through specific chapters and characters as well as well as unlocking wes.

Tips

So for those of you who don’t know, adventure mode has 6 possible chapters though you will only encounter 5 (you will always have darkness as chapter five and two worlds can only be either chapter 3 or 4). I assume that you guys already know the chapters perks and if you don’t, the wiki will have a pretty detailed explanation and i suggest you go look there before reading this guide.

A few things to note about adventure mode in general…

Sometimes certain resources are scarce so you have to be really conservative and only use them for the bare necessities. There is a slight loophole though, most chapters have different “sections” and sometimes you might not find for example trees in one section, another section may be fine.

Winter is only a big factor in the game is afoot and king of winter, it will be if you take too long on a cold reception too.

Tip 1- Use your resources wisely. Especially in the archipelago chapter, be sure to conserve your resources because even though you may have plenty of a certain resource, you may not get another chance to get it for a while. And trust me, sometimes your resources will go a lot faster than you might think (especially if you are science grinding).

Tip 2- Learn to fight. I suggest learning how to fight things that you might need to kill in adventure mode like pigs, shadow creatures, beefalo/koalefants (their really similar) , and clockwork monsters. That’s my opinion though do what you think is best.

Tip 3- Do/Don’t build bases. It all depends on how you play but i don’t advise building bases for the following reasons. They can take away key resources, they waste time and by the time you have settled in you could already have been done with the chapter or at least most of the way done, you might need to go out of your way to get resources that you otherwise wouldn’t need like charcoal and rabbits (for hat machine), as well as other things. Now on the flipside you can prepare better for other chapters by getting things like jerky, but that’s the only plus i see from it and for times sake it isn’t worth it

Tip 4- Be careful what you craft. Don’t craft things that are too hard to get like meat effigy or elemental staffs that will cost you time, possibly resources, and maybe your life. Also depending on how you play, things like a crock pot or boomerang might be really helpful or just a waste of time depending on certain factors. Things like weapons and armor and backpacks could be useful in all situations.

Tip 5- Winter Tips. In my opinion, you shouldn’t get a thermal stone if you have a tier two winter clothes or better (winter hat, tam o shanter, puffy vest, hibernation vest, beefalo hat) because it doesn’t do you much good unless you go to a fire often which would hinder progress A LOT. Also i think beefalo hat is the best because if you know how to fight beefalo (back to my earlier tip) then you can stay out for most of day and dusk without freezing (same for puffy vest and hibernation vest) assuming that at the beginning of the day you warmed up all the way. Also most of the other craftable winter clothes require beefalo wool, so why not just aim for a hat? Meat is the best source of food but of course don’t pass up veggies and don’t kill mactusk unless you know you can kill him. The deerclops isn’t worth killing unless you need food so just leave him somewhere if you encounter him.

Tip 6- Science Grinding. This is the ONLY reason i build a base. This allows you to craft things that you might need in future chapters and prevent you from having to build crafting machines in future chapters.

Tip 7- Sanity. If you can make a shovel, cooked green caps give you 15 sanity for 1 health and blue caps will give you 15 sanity for 3 health (this is a really good strategy as wickerbottom and this alone has gotten me through the entire adventure mode. Hover over mushrooms to see what they are). Tam o shanter is really good for sanity and if you make a crock pot, taffy will give you 15 (although you need honey). everything you prototype will give you 15 sanity so if your going to science grind then don’t bother raising your sanity beforehand.shaving gives Wilson i think its ten sanity.

Character Specifics…

Wilson- Don’t shave his beard unless you really need his beard

Willow- Her lighter gets carried between chapters and hold it out at all times for sanity/warmth and she benefits most from lighting things in her inventory on fire (stack size doesn’t matter) as she doesn’t take fire damage which in my opinion is her biggest advantage.

Wolfgang- His hunger drains faster in his normal and even faster in his mighty form. he has more health and loses more sanity from monsters and the dark. He is really good if you can get food easily and his extra health can mean the difference between life and death.

Wendy- Loses less sanity from the dark and monsters but only does 0.75 damage. In my opinion its not worth it to summon Abigail because she can get lost in hostile areas, her flower travels with you between chapters

wx-78- His low stats can be a problem at first but beating the first two chapters can get him all his upgrades and i suggest bringing gears to the next chapter if you have 10+ of them. He is immune to spoilage (but he CANNOT eat rot) and can really be good in a cold reception if he has an umbrella (one thing you might consider prototyping as him) and aside from rain perks, he just has really high stats.

wickerbottom- Has a higher sanity and has all science recipes and a science machine gives her all the alchemy engine recipes. Her books aren’t worth it in my opinion. she also takes bigger penalties from stale and spoiled food. She also can’t sleep.

woodie- Lucy the axe makes it so he doesn’t have to craft axes and she is carried between chapters. In my opinion his werebeaver isn’t worth it unless tools are a problem to get but the penalty he gets on his stats aren’t worth it in my opinion.

Wes- He starves faster, hits for 0.75 damage, less health and sanity, and balloons that do five damage and are five sanity to make. Hardcore character

Maxwell- First of all, congrats you beat adventure mode (unless your a cheater). Has only 75 health, regens sanity which doesn’t make it a problem unless you have to lower your sanity for obelisk (use green caps), the only things i find useful form his starting gear is his night armor and dark sword, I don’t think the shadow puppets are worth it.

I know i probably didn’t cover everything but i hope this guide is helpful 🙂
