Combine and Conquer: a guide to DST CO-OP

Overview

A Guide in which I point out every characters “Perks” to a group effort of survival as opposed to the usual single player scenario.

Introduction

Now before I get started with my tirade of cooperative strategy there are some bases I have to cover.

1.Props to [Dapper] Raccoon for the guides’ cover picture.
2.Due too DST being in beta This guide is bound to be outdated, and hopefully updated accordantly

This guide is surrounding the concept of Multilayer, and how a group could be staked up for efficiency against the cruel island we all know and love. With this I also try to probe around the idea of what perks and jobs a character has in a group setting as opposed to the usual single player mind set. I hope you find this useful; comments, corrections, and large amounts of money would all be appreciated.

Wilson

Major: Life preserver
Its quite the coincides really, Wilson, the poster boy of don’t starve, is also the top candidate for any team. The reason for this is that his core element (his Magnificent beard) counter acts the games most prominent mechanic perma-death.

Minor: Winter gatherer
With a full grown beard Wilson can manage to wear a backpack and still be fruitful in gathering resource for his troop in the middle of the unforgiving winter.

Willow

Major: Explorer
With her infinite torch, willow can round the edges of don’t starve. This will give the troop a view of valuable resources with out wearing out a savanna of grass, and a “stick-ish-borge” of sticks. The only problem with this is her lower sanity, but honestly such a trifle can be handled with a few cooked green mushrooms.

Minor: fighting
I say this one with extreme reluctance. The reason for this is that the only time she could out shine any other player in combat is in the middle of a forest fire. But such a thing would:

1.Burn all the resources
Honestly why even fight if that’s the reward.
2. Waste trees.
Yes I realize that it could be used for charcoal however who would need the amount of charcoal that one proper forest arena would produce?
3.”Wreck” everything.
Since ROG, fire was become a powerful force of nature that could not only destroy you, but also everything you have worked for.

Wolfgang

Major: Combat
Its really not that much of a surprise is it? With some extra food you can double your strength and gain a HP Max of a tank, However, this is at the price of some major fuel burn. The said fuel being sanity items to keep him from needing a straight jacket, and many-o-meatballs to keep that ravenous appetite at bay.
So in three words: PLEASE USE RESPONSIBLY.

Minor: Nothing
Fighting is the only thing he’s good at and he is very good at fighting.

Wendy

Major: Combat
Wendy is an odd one when it comes to fighting. She only has to use 50 sanity have her own personal infinite use AOE weapon (Abriagal) at her disposal. This is balanced by the fact that power is the only style she’s fluent in. So to keep it simple: easy to get, and best for large groups of enemies.

Minor: Cave exploration.
Less need for sanity mean more inventory space, more time in said cave, and less time spent on hunting those flipping green mushrooms all the time.

WX-78

Major: Utility
Utility meaning It has a lot of uses that are not that much help, and have no real correlation to each other.Let me just list them out.

1.Lighting rod
It attracts lighting so…keep It around until you have one up?

2.Dumpster
It can eat any of your spoiled or stale foods.

3.Exsplorer
For a limited time It can run around super fast and secrets light. GO get-um.

Minor: Combat
Ok you might be wondering why I put the tankest character alive with a combat minor, the reason for this is because It takes a LONG while to get the thing to any tank-like stats. With so much uses for gears its hard to give It a spare, especially when there’s so many fridges to make.

Wickerbottom

Major: Science tech tree
What can make exploring the first few days easier? a backpack.
What can make combat easier for those hard first days? a helmet.
And who can make these items and many more with little effort? Ms.Wickerbottom That’s who.
However after a while such a power becomes mute, so that’s where the other kicks in.

Minor: Utility
This is consider a minor because of the spaciousness of its uses are in game. Said spaciousness is from the amount of papyrus and sanity used in them. Never the less lets get that lovely list out.

1.Bird calling
This+X=Bird meat+feathers.
X meaning one of the following: End is neigh, convoluted gunpowder trap, regular traps, or bird traps.

2.Applied Horticulture
In other words manures every thing on screen, and probably makes beefallow cry over how useless they are now.

3.Sleepytime stories
I didn’t like the flute anyways.

4.On tentacles
Use it on Pig village. Pig village dies. Sandwich it and yourself between a boss master. Boss monster dies. Also TENTACLE SPIKES FOR ALL!

5.The end is neigh
Um…make Wx-78 happy? No wait, defiantly bird meat.

Woodie

Major: Resource gathering
Why waste flint on braking boulders and chopping trees when you could get a beaver to do it all for you. On a side note He also can do so all night long too.

Major 2: Combat
With 80% damage reduce, tentacle spike tier chomping power, and easy to refill health meter I see no reason to not get him to fight any sort off big mean monster. Just try not to mess with swarms.

Minor: Exploration
With a immunity to cold, night vision, and easy to fill meter he actually a bit more qualified meander around the map than willow. The problem with this is that with so much other potential jobs (and annoying music) I would rather just stick him to one of the others.

(William) Maxwell

Major: Magic Tech tree
With the hat-o-matic being fairly easy to get, Maxwell can make the whole magic branch easily accessible.STAFFS FOR EVERYONE!

Major 2: Dark magic
By this I mean anything that would normally not be done early by players because of sanity loss. Here’s the scope of it.

1.Acual nightmare farming
Ether by picking evil flowers or using the nightmare armor and sword to go insane (the real use of those items) you can gain a ton of nightmare fuel so everyone can have DA MAGICS (and that book of yours can usually be useful).

2.Grave digging
The act of demoralizing a burial ground can be a whole lot less stressfull if ones wearing a fancy suit.

3.DA MAGICS
The real MAGICS use up a lot of sainity. With that not being a problem, Maxwell can easily spam DA MAGICS all he wants.

Minor: Resource collecting
Since I have not mastered combat for the codex umbra, the only use I have for it now is collecting reasouces. Still though, with how much fuel you WILL be getting with the dark sword and armor; the clones can be used a bit more liberally.

Wes

Major: Hard Mode
He’s hard mode. Do I really have to explain it?

Webber

Major: Resource collecting
I sure most of you are familiar with the term spoder army. If not I will give the run down. Webber befriends a spoder pack. He tells them to attack other den. Spoder battle commences. Webber picks up leftovers. He tames survivors. Repeat with next den. So in sort he specializes in gathering spoder resource which, thankfully, cover many, many items and tools.

Minor: Combat
I guess you could use spoder army (if not spoder queen) to attack some unsuspecting hounds or what not. I personally would rather bust them up with another character, for I like to collect meat.

Wigfred

Major: Hunting
You may have Notices that I didn’t say combat. When I say this I mean That with the sanity, armor, and health perk I can see her be more out going with her killing, and more importantly a lot earlier.
All this making her in to a hunter status rather than combat, which to me implies more defending.

Minor: Still hunting
What, she’s good at killing what else do I say?

The acutual group part

Now with all the character’s roles under our hat there’s really only one question left. What’s a good team, and what’s a bad team?

Since I have had Tf2 MVM logic burned into my head for years my answer probably and is a balanced and varied team. So here’s my logic for it. The game is made up of certain mechanics that You the player, must over come. The ones that come to mind are things such as, combat, resource management, and the biggest being permadeth. In regular DS you had to manage all these by your self, so specialties can’t shine as much. However In DST you have the usual mundane cut in four for each person to share, and allows the room for people to specialize much more prominently. So with specialties being able to be utilized it would be smart to spread out the list of abilities so the team can cover most mechanics in the game.

My mold for teams would be the following.
Reviver: any one who can get beard hair the fastest.EX Wilson, Maxwell
Combat: Bust up who ever need to be.EX Wendy, Wolfgang, Wigfred
Resource accusation: WHo can ether get or make use of reasorces.EX Willow, Wickerbottom, Woodie
Ability:To largin up the groups powers pool.Ex Webber, Wickerbottom, Maxwell

An example of one is the following
1.wilson
2.wigfred
3.Woodie
4.Wickerbottom

1.Maxwell
2.Wolfgang
3.Willow
4.webber

1.Wilson
2.WX-78
3.Wickerbottom
4.webber
