Intro

Subnautica: Below Zero is a game in development by Unknown Worlds Entertainment that acts as an expansion to the story of Subnautica. Early access was released on January 30, 2019. Sector Zero is the setting of the story, which features a new protagonist and takes place in a different map two years after Ryley Robinson has escaped Planet 4546B.

Carnivorous Fauna

Brinewing
The Brinewing is a small, predatory fauna species. The Brinewing has a highly unique attack. A super cooled saline solution is expelled through the mouth by the contraction of a highly elastic bladder. As this solution is far colder than the water around it, the water in immediate contact with it is frozen. The Brinewing will attack and, if the player or another creature is hit, will freeze them. This does no damage and the Brinewing has no harmful attack, but it leaves the player helpless and slowly sinking for several seconds, vulnerable to oxygen depletion and attacks by any nearby Symbiotes. The player can be thawed by clicking LMB continuously.

Brute Shark
The Brute Shark is an aggressive fauna species found in the Twisty Bridges and its caves, Tree Spires and Lilypad Islands. The Brute Sharks in the Lilypad Islands and Twisty Bridges are essentially at the top of their food webs. However, the ones located in the Tree Spires can be seen being attacked by the Chelicerate. It can be observed preying on small fish, Arctic Rays, and even the player. Each bite will do 30 damage to the player.

Crashfish
The Crashfish is a defensive fauna species. The Crashfish lives in a symbiotic relationship with a flora species named the Sulfur Plant. Upon sensing the player’s presence, the Sulfur Plant opens up like a flower and the Crashfish emits a menacing gurgle, revealing the Crashfish inside. If the player approaches further after the Crashfish’s initial warning, the Crashfish will launch itself out of the Sulfur Plant and charge at the player. Exact damage isn’t exact as it varies depending on distance from the explosion.

Cryptosuchus
The Cryptosuchus is an aggressive, aquatic Fauna species. Cryptosuchus typically patrol a specific area or path, mostly content to swim in circles and roar if not disturbed. They are aggressive, but the player must pass fairly close to them to trigger a response. Each bite will do 30 damage to the player, and 9 damage to a Seatruck.

Noot Fish
The Noot Fish is a small, edible fauna species. The Noot Fish is a small predator that lives off fish small enough for it to swallow whole. It attacks prey by expanding its mouth veil and engulfing the prey before eating it. When a threat is encountered the Noot Fish will flare out its mouth veil into a disk shape in an attempt to startle the aggressor.

Pengling
The Pengling is a small predatory fauna species and the juvenile form of the Pengwing. Penglings spend about half their time above water and the other half underwater. When above water, they stay on ice floats or other land areas with a large group of other Penglings and Pengwings and move by hopping around. Occasionally, Penglings will dive headfirst into the water, at which point they will swim around hunting for food.

Pengwing
The Pengwing is a small predatory fauna species and the adult form of the Pengling. Penwings for the most part act the same way as a Pengling, but with a few different changes. Pengwings are defensive and will only attack the player if they pick up or attack a Pengling, or attack another Pengwing. The weather can affect the behavior of Pengwings. During Blizzards, Pengwings and Penglings will huddle together for warmth, with the Pengwings making a ring around the Penglings. During a Electrical Storm, Pengwings and Penglings will jump into the water. They will actively avoid the surface until it ends.

Pinnacarid
The Pinnacarid is a friendly fauna species. They are effectively the seals of 4546B and are friendly towards the player. Pinnacarids have the ability to traverse between land and water. Any small herbivores that can be found near Pinnacarids can also be fed by hand to them. Holding one of these fish in the player’s hand will prompt the Pinnacarid to follow the player.

Rock Puncher
The Rock Puncher is a large, aggressive fauna species. They move along the sea floor until approached by the player. At such a time, they will begin following the player, and will even occasionally jump at the player if they swim too close. They can be distracted by Rockgrubs, which are their main prey. Each punch will do 10 damage to the player.

Snow Stalker
The Snow Stalker is a large. aggressive fauna species. It is a relative of the aquatic Stalker native to the Crater. When the player is within distance the Snow Stalker becomes aggressive, stalking the player by crouching and slowly approaching players while snarling. If it successfully attacks the player, it will deal 35 damage, but if the player’s health is less than 35%, the attack will be an instant kill with a cinematic showing the player getting attacked and eaten in the creature’s jaws. However, the player has a certain probability to avoid an immediate death attack. If the player avoids an immediate death attack, the Snow Stalker will deal only 8 damage.

Snow Stalker Baby
The Snow Stalker Baby is the juvenile form of the Snow Stalker. The Snow Stalker Baby is passive towards the player, unlike the highly aggressive adults. They can be interacted with, though will snap at the player partway through the animation but deal no damage. After interaction, they will get angry with the player. This also results in it attracting adult snow stalkers nearby.

Spikey Trap
The Spikey Trap is an immobile, aggressive fauna species. If the player swims within range of the Spikey Trap, they will be grabbed by one of its tentacles. While being held by a tentacle, the player will be slowly drawn towards the creature and take constant damage. The tool or hand can be used to hit the tentacle with RMB, which will cause the Spikey Trap to release the player allowing them to swim free. If the player is successfully pulled into the creature’s mouth, it will consume the player, dealing 60 damage.

Squidshark
The Squidshark is a highly aggressive fauna species that can be found in the Deep Lilypads Cave, Deep Twisty Bridges and the Lilypad Islands. If the Squidshark manages to catch the player, it will grab them and deal 40 damage, but the player will escape by forcing their way out of its mouth. However, if this attack is performed and the player has 40 or less health, they will fail to escape its hold and slip into its mouth, which results in an instant kill. If the player is inside of a vehicle and is within close proximity of a Squidshark, it will perform an electrical attack with its tentacles, whipping them towards whatever is in front of the creature. This attack will temporarily disable the vehicle’s power.

Symbiote
The Symbiote is an aggressive fauna species that has a symbiotic relationship with the Titan Holefish. Symbiotes will attack the player if they get close to the Titan Holefish. Each bite will deal 7 damage to the player.

Herbivorous Fauna

Arctic Peeper
The Arctic Peeper is a passive fauna species. The Arctic Peeper shares a very similar appearance to its relative, the Peeper, of tropical seas.

Arctic Ray
The Arctic Ray is a mid-sized, passive predatory fauna species. The Arctic Ray can be seen preying on smaller fish that it finds nearby, but it will be passive towards the player.

Arrow Ray
The Arrow Ray is a small fauna species. The Arrow Ray has an elongated, teardrop shaped body with a pale orange dorsal side and white ventral side. It lacks a tail fin, instead having a glowing point at the end of the body. The head section is comprised of a pair of large circular eyes and a simple, toothless mouth. Behind the eyes are two pairs of slot-shaped openings.

Bladderfish
The Bladderfish is a small, passive fauna species. The Bladderfish stands out in comparison to other small fish, as it can be used to craft Filtered Water. Eating a raw Bladderfish will restore fifteen points of Oxygen.

Boomerang
The Boomerang is a small passive fauna species. The Boomerang sways side-to-side as it swims. If approached by the player, it will eventually flee.

Discus Fish
The Discus Fish is a passive fauna species. The Discus Fish has a cylindrical main body with a pair of flattened, roughly semicircular structures projecting from the dorsal and ventral sides of the body.

Eye Jelly
The Eye Jelly moves very slowly in any direction, including upward and downward. When the player comes near it, its eye will follow the player. Coming too close to its lower half causes the Eye Jelly to emit a shock, damaging the player, Seatruck, and Prawn Suit. The shock will do 10 damage to the player, Seatruck, and Prawn Suit for every second that they are near the tentacles of the Eye Jelly.

Feather Fish
The Feather Fish is a small, edible fauna species. This creature has a compact main body with the top half covered in large, purple overlapping scales and the bottom half being smooth white skin and a black area around the mouth.

Feather Fish (Red)
The Feather Fish (Red) is a small, edible fauna species and essentially the red variant of the Feather Fish. This creature has slight anatomical differences to its close relative aside from coloration, namely its slightly shorter and bulkier fins, more pronounced tail fin and scales being present on both the top and bottom halves of the body.

Hoopfish
The Hoopfish is a common, passive fauna species that can be found in many biomes. The Hoopfish is a rather slow swimmer, and is mostly seen forming shoals in various biomes. It will try to flee if approached by the player.

Lily Paddler
The Lily Paddler is capable of a form of defensive hypnosis that it will use on the player if they approach, causing them to lose control of their movement and be reoriented against their will, similar to the Mesmer though nonaggressive. This hypnosis leaves the player in a confused state for some amount of time, during which the function of the Compass and HUD elements are impaired, and audio is distorted.

Sea Monkey
If the player is holding a tool, the Sea Monkey will approach them and attempt to steal the item. If the player puts away their equipment before the Sea Monkey touches them it will still perform the lunge animation but will not take anything. There are other mechanics associated with the Sea Monkey, though the stealing mechanic is the main one it has.

Sea Monkey Baby
The Sea Monkey Baby is a small passive fauna species and the juvenile form of the Sea Monkey. It is very small and almost entirely purple in color, with a pale stripe running down either side of the body.

Skyray
The Skyray is a small, herbivorous avian fauna species. The Skyray is a small, avian creature having two wings covered with white feathers. Its head, chest and wing tips are black, connected by a thin line spanning the front edge of its wings.

Spinefish
The Spinefish is a small, passive subspecies of the Hoopfish. Its in-game description states that it uses its appearance to hide from predators by playing dead. Like Hoopfish, Spinefish are cathemeral and easy to catch, having moderate Food values.

Spinner Fish
The Spinner Fish is a small herbivorous prey species with a peculiar method of swimming. Rather than using fins to propel itself through the water, the Spinner Fish instead uses three pairs of siphons on either side of its body for jet propulsion.

Titan Holefish
The Titan Holefish is a large fauna species. It lives in a symbiotic relationship with the Symbiote. The player can use the Titan Holefish as an oxygen supply, similar to the Oxygen Plant. However, to approach the Titan Holefish, the player must avoid or fight off the Symbiotes surrounding the fish. The Titan Holefish is only useful as an emergency oxygen source, as the amount of oxygen is somewhat low and protected by Symbiotes.

Triops
The Triops is a small, edible fauna species. The Triops has a pale blue cone-shaped body, with the point at the posterior end. The skin has a scaly texture and appears to be attached to the body as thick plates with sutures between. The front of the body is occupied by three large eyes, two lower eyes and one upper eye.

Trivalve
The Trivalve is very passive and playful towards the player, it can also interact with the player. Its Behavior is similar to the Cuddlefish from Subnautica. The Trivalve will either follow the player around or stay in one area when told to. The player can tell it to stop/start following them using RMB. The player can play with it using LMB. It has various play actions, such as tickling its nose, stroking its head, scaring it with a rock, or feeding it treats, and will display various emotions depending on said action.

Scavenger & Parasitic Fauna

Rockgrub
The Rockgrub is a very small, passive fauna species that mostly dwells in cavernous areas. Despite superficially resembling an invertebrate the PDA states that it is a possible relative of the Sand Shark, meaning it must be a small vertebrate. Rockgrubs can be picked up, it used as bait for Rock Punchers. The Rockgrub is the smallest living fauna in Subnautica: Below Zero.
