Overview
The First 20 Days of Hamlet!, Hamlet is a difficult dlc to learn how to play, i may not teach everything you need to know here but i can guarantee you will know better what to do after reading this, this is just a pilot guide, i will do more depending on feedback
The Basics
So, you just created your brand new Hamlet world, and you spawn in this set piece
For now, you shouldn’t bother with those (but take the machete of course), but believe me they are important for the next season, which i will talk about later.
So the basics, exploring around you will find Tall Grass and Saplings, you need the machete to get the Tall Grass, but now you’re wondering, “Where is the flint?” well they are here Stone Slabs, flipping them can give you items such as Rocks, Gold, Relics, Gummy Slugs and Bean Bugs, but can also spawn Vipers (pretty much the snakes from shipwrecked, but they can also swim), so watch out, try to flip all Stone Slabs you can find till you get 2 Flint, then you should make a pickaxe to mine those stone slabs, giving you Two Stone and one of the items that i mentioned earlier, You can also find Cave Clefts
You can enter these Cave Clefts and get into a small cave
As you can see there’s Stalagmites here, which can give Gold AND Blue/Red Gems, which are EXTREMELY Important for the future seasons, there’s also Unimportant Pillars here, which when mined cause a small earthquake that can be avoided by leaving the cave, and reentering later, these can spawn things that earthquakes from the ROG caves normally spawn, but also Scorpions
Stats:
200 HP, 20 Damage
Drops: Monster Meat, 30% Chance of Poison Gland, 30% Chance for a Stinger and 30% Chance for Chitin (Can be used to make a Mant Helmet, replacing even a 1% Football Helmet into a 100% Mant Helmet)
Special Ability: Can Poison You
Yes, Poison, i recommend that you avoid these scorpions at all cost, it’s just not worth it to kill them and accidentally get poisoned, but now that i listed the basics, time to tell you what you can find around this Plateau.
What you can find exploring around
One thing you can find is the Painted Biome, (or Painted Desert as i like to call it)
here you can find mobs such as the Thunderbird
Getting close to these birbs will get them startled, they will do a high pitched sound, spawning 3 Lightning, which if they hit you, they can do a good damage on you (each lightning does 10 damage)
Here’s what they look like when you get close to them
You can also find Gnat Swarms here
These pesky bugs, when approached will fly to you, and “stay” on your body, giving you an insanity aura of -12.5/min, and doing 1 damage occasionally, and yes, they can stack on you, To avoid them, you need to get a Bug b’ Gone, on the survival tab, to make it you need to get 6 Tuber (these trees around the painted desert biome) And a Flytrap Stalk, dropped by a Fully Grown Snaptooth (the one that doesn’t move), but i’ll get into that later, for now, just try to avoid them
Tip: WX-78 Players can get zapped by thunderbirds to get Overload, which stacks, just watch out for Nightmare Creatures.
As you can see by the screenshot i sent of a painted desert biome, on the left there’s shadows, if you’re wondering what is that, It’s the Deep Rainforest Biome, or, The Jungle
This is a Dangerous biome, i will list mobs that you can find here
A Snaptooth Seedling, mobs that walk around usually on a group, this is the Level 1 Version, for a Snaptooth to level up it needs to eat any kind of meat once, making them level up
Stats:
250 HP 15 Damage (LVL 1)
300 HP 20 Damage (LVL 2)
350 HP 25 Damage (LVL 3)
They can drop Leafy Meat (the same meat from Lureplants), Vines and Nectar (Can be used in a honey chest, found on a Mant Hill)
Now, the Snaptooth Flytrap (Or LVL 4)
These don’t move, and is the mob that i mentioned before that drops the Flytrap Stalk
Stats:
400 HP, 30 Damage
This is the Spider Monkey (even though it’s really a gorilla but okay)
They are usually in a group around a Cocooned Tree
These Trees drop Wood and Silk.
Stats:
550 HP, 60 Damage
Drops: 2 Monster Meat, 75% Chance of Spider Gland, 3 Beard Hair, 25% Chance of Silk, and Manure Periodically
I Recommend that you don’t fight with them till you get a Football Helmet/Log Suit
More Things that you can find are:
Statues, with a Ball-Pein Hammer (Two Iron, One Stick, Iron can be found around the Painted Desert biome) you can “mine” these, taking the relic out of them, these relics can be selled to pigs in the pig city, which i will explain more in a future guide.
Ruins, like cave clefts, you can enter them(first you need a machete, as i shown in the image to get through the entrance) here you can find Treasure, Traps, Vipers, Scorpions, Bats etc, i will explain more on the ruins in a future guide.
The Stone Thing Setpiece, very important to find, since it is the second source of gears in the Hamlet Dlc, i recommend that you look through the ENTIRE deep rainforest biome for this one.
The Poison Rainforest biome, cannot be accessed at the moment (cuz of you know, the poison), this isn’t important to you at the moment, so i will explain it in a future guide, but a tip, you can pass through it to get rid of pesky Gnats without a Bug ‘b Gone.
You know the deal, yadda yadda yadda future guide, there are several pieces, you can mine them to get iron, but they will “wake up” and try to attack you.
You will also find of course, The Pig City!Of course this would get way too big to talk about in a guide that’s not even focused on it, so yadda yadda future guide.
You will also find the Mant Hill
Basically, it’s like a cave cleft, i will not explain what is on the mant hill (for a future guide), but i will show the Mants
They are like Pigs, to “Recruit” them you need to have a Mant Hat and a Mant Suit, otherwise, if you approach them they will try to attack you (but not immediately)
Stats:
Health: 250
Damage: 22.5
Loot: 75% Chance of Monster Meat, 25% Chance of Chitin
And Now that i explained the dangers of what you can find around the Hamlet DLC, let’s get into base making
The Bas(e)ics
Soo, where do you start with your base, well you should need
– A Fire Pit
– Chests (One or Two is enough)
– Two Ice Boxes
– 4-6 Crock Pots
-3-6 Drying Racks
-A Smelter
-A Small Grass/Twigs farm with 20 or more Tufts/Saplings
What is a Smelter?
Well a Smelter is a very useful machine made with 4 Boards, 6 Cut Stone and 1 Red Gem, what is it use? well when you put 4 Iron inside it, it creates Alloy!, Alloy can be used to make a Halberd, a very good weapon. a Fancy Helmet and a Tin Suit, armor that has the same protection as a football helmet/log suit but have a HUGE amount of health, an Oscillating Fan, useful for drying you off during the next season and a Sprinkler, also a very important machine for the Lush Season, which i will explain on the next guide.
But back to bases, here is what an optimal base should look like
As you can see everything is there, but if you look closely i removed the turf below the grass tufts, why? well the reason is simple, when grass is planted on a rainforest turf for example, it will turn into Tall Grass instead of grass, which you can notice because it didn’t need fertilization, when multiple Tall Grasses are close to each other they can spawn Weevoles
Stats:
150 Hp, 6 Damage
Alone, they’re easy to deal with, in group, watch out.
Now where to get food?
Well for starters, Dung Beetles Drop monster meat, which is of course useful for various crock pot dishes, Tip: the “Dung” of the dung beetles drops manure and rocks, which are very useful.
There is also various plants around, Radishes, Asparagi and Aloe
Stats:
Asparagus:
3 Health, 12.5 Hunger, 0 Sanity (Raw), Rots in 6 Days
3 Health, 25 Hunger and 0 Sanity (Cooked), Rots in 3 Days
Radish:
1 Health, 12.5 Hunger, 0 Sanity (Raw), Rots in 10 Days
3 Health, 12.5 Hunger, 0 Sanity (Cooked), Rots in 15 Days
Aloe:
8 Health, 9.3 Hunger, 0 Sanity (Raw), Rots in 10 Days
3 Health, 12.5 Hunger, 0 Sanity (Cooked), Rots in 15 Days
They are spread around the Islands of Hamlet (Yes, Islands), they of course, don’t last forever but you can make various dishes like
Asparagus Soup
Which is made with One Asparagus, One Vegetable and Two Fillers that aren’t Twigs or Meat
Stats:
20 HP, 18.75 Hunger and 5 Sanity Restore
Rots in 15 Days
Spicy Vegetable Stinger
It can be made with a Radish or an Asparagus, Another vegetable and Ice (Which can be bought at shops in the pig city)
Stats:
3 Health, 25 Hunger, 33 Sanity, Rots in 15 Days
And now, let’s FINALLY get into the Humid Season.
Wet Times (not in the kinky way)
Soo, Humid Season is coming and you’re wondering, what do you need? Well for starters you need a Pith hat
To make it you need 1 Cloth, 3 Vines and 6 Cork
Well, you know how to get cork, and vines, but cloth? where do you get that?
It’s Simple, if you’re not wormwood, on the Deflated Balloon Setpiece i mentioned before is where you get cloth
So if you hammer the deflated balloon, it will drop cloth, which will be used to make the pith hat.
BUT, if you’re wormwood, you can buy cloth in the Tools Shop, or the Pith Hat at the Hat Shop at the second island (yeah, another thing i will explain on a future guide)
But Now, into the actual humid season, if you’re not using a mod like Combined Status you will notice that the season has changed when it’s more bluish than normal, similar to how Winter and Hurricane season look like in their respective worlds.
But now into humid season, humid season filled with rain and Fog, yes, fog, basically fog is a new mechanic that slows you down and well, acts like fog, blocking your view, you can avoid that using the pith hat as mentioned earlier, to face the rain you can make a Snakeskin Hat
With One Snakeskin, One Straw Hat and a Single Bone Shard (Dropped by Dung Piles or on the dung of the dung beetle)
And now finally, the dangers of Humid season! (this is don’t starve what did you expect?)
Soooo, glowflies
So let me explain, you see when humid season is coming they will turn into these cocoons
they will stay like this for some time but when Humid Season arrives these cocoons will hatch, revealing Rabid Beetles!
Stats:
HP 60, Damage 10
Loot: 10% Chance of Lightbulb, 20% Chance of Chitin
This cutie doesn’t seem like it does much… till it turns into a massive group, now you’re wondering, how to get rid of them, Bug ‘B Gone’s of course!, they can easily destroy massive groups, getting you huge amounts of Light Bulbs and Chitin.
No, it’s still not over, since there’s preparing for the next season, remember the Sprinkler i mentioned on the last section?well you need to set it up near water, like this
Now you’re wondering, what are these plants near the sprinkler, well they are Nettles
They are found around the Deep Rainforest biome and only grow when wet for a long period of time, you can also just pick them up when it’s raining since their cooldown Does not reset. after drying up.
With 3 Nettles and a Filler (a Twig is the best choice) you can make Nettle Rolls!
Stats:
20 Health, 25 Hunger, 0 Sanity, Rots in 6 Days
Special Effect: Negates the effects of Hay Fever for 720 seconds
what is Hay Fever? well it’s the main gimmic of the next season, Lush Season, but that’s for another guide.
And well, before you think the guide is over there’s still some things i should explain to you.
Extra Stuff
Yep, some more things you should know, Firstly, let’s get into the BFB
Yes, this thing is gigantic, and it will spawn around Humid Season
Will it attack you, not really!, it will take you to it’s nest where you can mine these egg looking like rocks to get gems!
you can also hammer the structures to get Boards and iron, and these small trees drop Logs/Twigs, there’s also twigs/shrubs around that give Grass and Twigs
If you look closely there’s some weird egg in this nest, what is it?
Well you need to hatch it to find out, if you know how to take care of a tallbird egg, it’s the same thing as taking care of one, but if you don’t know, basically, you need to keep it sometimes close and sometimes away from a Fire Pit, in day and dusk you keep it away from a firepit, and at night you keep it close to one.
When it finally hatches you will get a new pal!
Ro Bin is a useful buddy that is basically a walking chest! (like Chester or Packim), he sadly doesn’t have any transformations but if you want to loot someplace, take him, He also has his Gizzard Stone which is similar to the Eye Bone/Fish Bone from ROG/SW.
There is also this Regal Scepter on this island
This Item will be explained better in future guides, but for now, i recommend that you keep it.
Now you’re wondering, how do i leave this island?, well if you look around you may find a Cave Entrance!
It leads to a cave similar to cave clefts, which can include Light Bulbs!
To leave this place you need to find the exit, which is normally a hole in the wall, like this (look at the wall to the north)
But now, you probably wondering, is there any way i can access this island as early as possible, why yes there is, with the Bird Whistle!
But how do you make it? well you need a Hippopotamoose Antler, dropped by a Hippopotamoose (this is a hard name),3 Platapine Quills and 1 Flint
Stats:
Health: 500
Damage: 50
Loot: 4 Meat and the Antler
They are like beefalo, attack one, you attract the group, but believe me, they are easy to dodge.
Now to the Platapine Quill, they are dropped by Platapines
Basically the Gobblers of Hamlet, to spawn them you need to pick a Lotus Flower, from a Lotus Plant
Stats:
1 Health, 12.5 Hunger and 5 Sanity (Raw)
1 Health, 12.5 Hunger and 15 Sanity (Cooked)
A Platapine has around a 20% chance to spawn after picking up a Lotus Plant, it’s kinda hard to hunt them due to their speed, but you can easily stunlock them with any weapon (Don’t use your fists tho lol)
After getting all the requirements you can make a bird whistle, which will call the BFB when used, so you can easily get the Gems, the Regal Scepter and your buddy Ro Bin!
And Now the last part that i couldn’t really fit anywhere else, Bats!
These bats are like Hounds/Crocodogs, they will appear once in a while to attack you, homever it’s quite easy to deal with them.
Stats:
Health: 130
Damage: 25
Loot: 50% Chance of Monster Meat, 50% Chance of Pig Skin? and 10% Chance of a Batlisk Wing
It’s Easy to tank them with A Football Helmet, a Log Suit and any weapon (prefferably a Halberd).
And this is the end of it, the guides on Hamlet are of course not over, Next up, the Pig City and the Ruins!
