Overview

How to make double wishbone suspension with adjustable ride height and travel.

Introduction

In this guide I will show you how to build engine-powered adjustable double wishbone suspension.

Engine powered suspension has the advantage of being more compact, more effective and also uses less computing power than the stock suspension.

This suspension has the advantage of holding the wheels camber during suspension travel. This will give much better handling during turns.

Do not link the engine that controls your suspension to any drive bearings. Use a seperate engine.

Building

First we need the base and some bearings for the lower arms

Next add some risers and bearings to attach the upper arms.

Now we add the upper and lower arms and bearings. Longer upper and lower arms will increase the suspensions travel distance, and also soften the suspension.

Now add the uprights.

Now use your welding tool to attach the uprights lower and upper pieces together. Click and drag over the parts to weld them together.

Add some bump stops to the bottom. Top bump stops are not necessary unless you want to restrict suspension travel.

Now we add some axles.

I added some blocks to the rear just for demonstration.

Add some wheels and bearings.

Now add the engine to power the suspension.

Then hook up the engine to the bearings on either the top or bottom. Make sure that the bearings are rotating the correct direction.

Now adjust the engines power to set the stiffness of the suspension.

If you need more power for a heavy object then you can link up all four of the bearings to the engine. This effectively doubles the weight it can handle.
There will be other factors that will affect how much weight it can handle. A vehicle with longer axles will not hold as much weight before the axles give or “break”.
