Overview
A simple guide for how to cure materials and craft items
Introduction
Edit: Jan 24, 2016
So, there’s been so many new features added in the last two updates that this guide is now really out of date. Especially the arrow crafting part which can now only be made in the fordge in Desolation Point. I will update again once I have the time… but I’m a little too busy at work for the moment. All of the non-arrow related items should still be correct though.
————————————————————————————————————————–
This is a work in progress. I will add items as I find them in the game world so I can include screenshots. The finished guide will include curing times for each material and amounts of said materials to make their associated unique items. This guide should be accurate to alpha 0.244. If you wish to contribute feel free to include details in the comments and I will add them in.
I only have time to game roughly once or twice a month so hopefully I’ll be able to add a little to my crafting guide whenever I have time to game.
Thank you to those who have commented. I really appreciate it : )
—————————————————————————————————————————-
Also, the bear skin bedroll will be a long time coming. This is why : )
List of future additions:
-> Locations of Crafting Supplies on each map (especially for bows)
-> Video of a Bear Attack (it was an interesting experience)
-> Breakdown of time for each item to cure and what it makes
-> Locations of Crafting Benches (this is lowest priority)
Curing Items
Item descriptions now indicate that hides and branches must be cured indoors for a certain number of days before you can use them. The description is not entirely clear. Being indoors does not count if the materials are in a container. They MUST be dropped on the floor in order for curing to work. Leather, all hides, gut and branches for making bows and arrows must all be cured this way.
If you are in a valid “curing” location the material will have a percentage indicator for how much it has cured. Below is what a wolf pelt will look like after roughly 16 hours of curing. 7 days (or 168 hours) of total drying time is needed.
Birch Sapling – Locations and Curing
Required component for ARROW SHAFTS. Takes four days to cure.
Known Locations:
Mystery Lake:
From Fashtar: saplings can be found on the ridge behind the trapper’s cabin
Coastal Highway:
Found at the “Commuter’s Lament” at the end of the highway.
Pleasant Valley:
From MightyDragonofAwe| trade.tf: travel almost all the way down the main road, or go to the farmstead and continue forward from the main door there and you should see a birch forest, about 5-6 birch saplings spawn there, along with birch bark.
Maple Sapling – Location and Curing
Required component for BOWS. Takes six days to cure.
Known Locations:
Mystery Lake:
From Israphelo: Maple samplings can be found not to far right under the rail road bridge (confirmed)
Coastal Highway:
While heading towards the abandoned fire watch tower you should come across a stretch of trail that looks like this:
On the other side of a small embankment is a grove of maple saplings. It’s well hidden and easy to miss. In the picture below you can barely make out two saplings from behind some trees once you’ve climbed the snowbank.
Pleasant Valley: Unknown
Crow Feathers – Known Locations
Crow Feathers are required for crafting arrows.
As I find reliable drops I will add them in.
Mystery Lake: Unknown
Coastal Highway:
A feather seems to drop every 24-48 hours (unconfirmed) near the corpse at the tip of the island containing the Misanthrope’s Homestead. I was able to havest three over two weeks by checking this location
Jackrabbit Island has two corpses: one obvious and one hidden behind the island on the ice. Both may spawn crow feathers.
Random drops? I found two feathers on the ice but a deer may have been killed there recently (unconfirmed)
Pleasent Valley: Unknown
Arrows
Arrows are a multi-step build. You will require 1 scap metal, 1 birch sapling (cured) and 3 crow feathers to make ONE arrow
Requires:
- Tool: Hunting Knife, Tools (or Quality Tools)
- Materials: Cured Birch Sapling, Scrap Metal, 3 Crow Feathers
- Time: 2.5 hours (with Quality Tools)
First you need to make the arrow shafts. Requres a cured birch sapling and hunting knife. Makes THREE arrow shafts.
Then you need to make the arrow heads. Unfortnately this mechanic has been changed. You now need to FORGE arrow heads from scrap metal. The only location this can be done (so far) is on the Desolation Point map. However, you can still find broken arrows and fresh arrows on the map and in loot containers. There is one guarenteed (so far) location to find broken arrows on the Mystery Lake map if you don’t mind spoilers.
In the Carter Hydroelectric Dam is a survivor who was not successful in fighting Fluffy. While struggling with the wolf, they broke two arrows, crawlled away and bled out. At the very bottom of the Dam is a door that leads to the Dam’s interior and, eventually, the transition zone to Pleasant Valley. Immediately inside the door on the floor is the dead survivor and their two broken arrows. The arrows may be harvested for one arrow head and two crow feathers each.
Lastly, the shaft and arrow heads are assembled with crow feathers as fletching. No tools required. Makes ONE complete arrow.
The assembled arrow may be used with the bow for hunting. Guide will be updated once I find reliable maple sampling and crow feather drop locations.
Deerskin Pants
Warmth bonus +3, Windchill bonus +3
Made from Deer Hide: Curing time = 5 days
Requires:
- Tool: Sewing Kit
- Materials: 3 Cured Deer Hides, 4 Cured Gut
- Time: 12.5 hours
Benifits:
Are you tired of freezing in jeans? Can you not find cargo pants? Did the only pair of cargo pants you find in 110 days of survival get eaten by bears? Then try Deerskin pants! They are quite excellent!
Old Man’s Beard Wound Dressing
Counts as both a bandage and as antibiotics for wound care
Made from Old Man’s Beard:
Old Man’s Beard is found hanging on dead trees in all three map areas. If you see it you should collect it.
Requires:
- Tool: None
- Materials: 3 Old Man’s Beard, 1 Bandage
- Time: 1.5 hours
Old Man’s Beard Wound Dressings are much better than bandages and antibiotics since you now only need to cary one first aid item.
Rabbit Skin Mitts
Warmth bonus +4, Windchill bonus +2
Made from Rabbit Pelt: Curing time = 5(?) days
->Will insert picture later
Requires:
- Tool: Sewing Kit
- Materials: 4 Cured Rabbit Pelts, 2 Cured Gut
- Time: 5 hours
Benifits:
There are many good mitts in the game. However, rabbit skin mitts are easy to repair (you will have a lot of pelts) saving you precious cloth and they are still very, very warm.
Wolf Skin Coat
Warmth bonus +7, Windchill bonus +5
Made from Wolf Hide: Curing time = 7 days
Requires:
- Tool: Hunting Knife
- Materials: 4 Cured Wolf Pelts, 4 Cured Gut
- Time: 25 hours
Benifits:
The wolf skin coat is arguably the best jacket in the game. It is very durable and has excellent warmth and wind chill bonuses. The only downside is that it weighs 3 kg but being neigh impervious to the weather is worth the trade off.
Caution:
25 hours is very long to craft an item. You can make the coat in sections (e.g. two 12.5 hour marathons) but this requires more raw materials. It is possible to make the coat in one shot. However, you must have perfect condition, lots of calories and not be thirsty. A 25 hour crafting session will make you tired, starving, dehydrated and take roughly 60% of your condition. It is worth it (in my opinion) so you use less materials but be aware of the risk when you begin.
