How to win Super Hexagon: A Simple Guide

Overview

This is a guide to give you tips on how to win Super Hexagon, and aims to do it without making it seem impossible.

Configuration/Keyboard/Mouse/Etc.

Before you get started with trying to win, you need to make sure you can actually react in time.

The first part isn’t rocket science, simply open up Super Hexagon, go to the Options menu, and turn off the V-Sync. The game may look choppy but the edge it will give you is incredible.

When it comes to using the Keyboard, Mouse, or Gamepad, its all your choice. People use what is comfortable. I use the A and D keys, others use the left and right arrowkeys, others use a controller, others use the mouse, and a few even use the joystick. Just experiment around and find what you use best.

Patterns

A unique thing about Super Hexagon is that it is random, but not completely. There are patterns you can recognize, and will help you out in reacting quickly. The below guide has documented all the patterns, and they vary among the seven levels (the seventh being the black and white mode that you can only get to by winning hyper hexagonest).

This is a good documentation of all the patterns:

That guide can help you figure patterns out, so you don’t spend a long time caught up on one part of a level. However, the best way to actually learn a pattern is to play that level. You are going to have to think about it at first. You will mess up. But in the end you will get it as long as you play the game enough to get used to the patterns.

General Hints

Center Yourself
You’ll notice when playing Super Hexagon that the screen/game/hexagon/whatever is divided into 6 pieces, and that each pattern either fills or leaves empty these pieces. The best thing to do is to try and get in the middle of each bit. This may be hard at first but eventually you will get the hang of it and will be losing less

Its Mental
Also, Super Hexagon can be a bit of a mental game if you have a tendency to thing a lot or zone out. I have run into this issue, and the best thing I have found is to leave the music on. For me, it pulls away some of my capability of spacing out so I can not get distracted on other things. You might just have to focus on the game, but if you turn the sound off and find you have a problem focusing it might be worth a shot.

Music
Also, turning on your own music can be a big help. The music in Super Hexagon can get you worked up, so turning on something that is calm (or that you just like) might mean you freak out less. I once played Super Hexagon listening to the album Brothers by The Black Keys and I wound up breaking several of my records. Finding some music you like or that is calming (but prefferably both) can help you relax.

Also, from InvaderZ:
“Another tip: Disable the sound files of the lady talking every time you die or you begin. It reduces the frustration a lot. You can do this by going into the game files and re-naming the sounds you don’t want to hear.”

The Secret to Winning

You may have come here to find the secret key to winning Super Hexagon, so here it is:

Find what works for you.

This may not be some big and grand secret, but the biggest key is being focused. People get there through different ways, so if you need some little special thing to do that, use it!

If it helps you to relax by using an electric back/foot massager that you might find at Brookstone or Bed Bath and Beyond for cheap then use it (I might actually have to try that). Going in between playing Super Hexagon and a relaxing game like Proteus or 9.03m might help, or just playing non-stop. Or drinking a bunch of Mountian Dew or coffee and getting hyped up as hell might help if you find you are too slow when relaxed.

Also, not everyone goes through the patterns the same. Some people take the triple c by spinning the same direction each time. I go left then right then left (or reverse of that). Generally, some people often choose to keep going the same direction as much as they can, I generally try to switch directions a lot so I don’t have to move as much (and so if I screw up I can catch myself quicker).

I could go on for hours with ideas, but you need to find what works for you. And that combined with some determination or playing the game enough can help you win.
