Madness? This is Super Hexagon.

Overview

………………………………………………………………………………………………………..well, this game…………………..

What happens in this game, NEEDS to stay in this game.

………………………………………………………………well. This game, huh.

To be brutally honest, this game is hard.
Harder than any indie game you may have ever played.
Harder than Super Meat Boy.
Harder than the friggin’ Impossible Game-and that’s stretching it a bit, ’cause both games just mentioned are balls to beat.
Let’s get down to the basics, shall we?

As obviously stated, this is solely around the Hegaon. There are 8 levels, consisting of 60 second increments of each sub-level. These are:
~Hexagon (Main Lv.1)
~Hyper Hexagon (Hexagonest)
~Hyper Hexagon Squared (Hyper Hexagonest)
~Hexagoner (Main Lv.2)
~Hyper Hexagoner (Hexagonester)
~Hyper Hexagoner Squared (Hyper Hexagonester)
~Hexagonest (Main Lv.3)
~Hyper Hexagonest (Hexagonestestest)
~Quinthexagon (Black and White)
Point (0-9.99 Second Mark)
Line (10-19.99 Second Mark)
Triangle (20-29.99 Second Mark)
Square (30-44.99 Second Mark)
Pentagon (45-59.99 Seond Mark)
Hexagon (60-119.99 Second Mark)
Super Hexagon(120-179.99 Second Mark)

The gameplay is rather simple-use the left and right arrow keys to move the little triangle/arrow-whatever you want to call it-left or right to avoid the Hexagon’s incoming walls. However, the game isn’t hard because of gameplay mechanic, rather the amplification of the gameplay mechanic. The RPM (Rotations/Minute) of each stage progressively increases as you progress through the game. This sort of difficulty curve is common in many video games, however this game implements even more curveballs at you to keep you on your toes. The levels each have their own quirks, forcing you to adapt quickly to get anywhere. Such quirks that are found in each level are Rotation Change, Pattern Change, Pattern Combo, Pattern Super Combo, Beatbox Effect* and Constant Color Change**. Some levels have special quirks that will mess with you even further into madness-a main reason why I like to call this game “Spinning Sparta”.

*The inner Hexagon bounces in and out as the music plays, thus creating a Beatbox Effect. There are different music for each of the three main levels.

**It is strongly advised that any people who possess Epileptic effects during vibrant color change and sudden change in movement take caution before playing this game, as it includes at times harsh situations of the aforementioned effects above.

With all of this said, let’s delve into the levels.

~HEXAGON~
This stage is your fresh, out of the gate stage. There are simple patterns at a very slow RPM, and the Beatbox Effect making it easy for beginners to catch on. Make 60 seconds, and you move to the next level. One nack this stage has is how it can change from a hexagon to a pentagon, to a square, and then back upthe step ladder. Because of this, you have to adapt to the different patterns that it brings you. There is also some tilt in the game screen that changes subtlely as you play the level.

~HEXAGONEST & HYPER HEXAGONEST~
After 60 seconds, a somewhat faster version of Hexagon appears, and the color changes can be a little hard on your eyes. However, it retains the same layout of Hexagon, and is still relatively easy. Both levels make a combined 120 seconds if you have started from the beginning (Hexagon).

~HEXAGONER~
This level definitely starts to show what SH really has to offer. Throwing more advanced combos than what you have seen in Hexagon changes your gameplan, and may cause you to die more often. The RPM is definitely faster, and the Beatbox Effect is more intense due to the song change. The screen tilt is still ongoing from Hexagon, which makes the situation all the more difficult.

~HEXAGONESTER & HYPER HEXAGONER~
And this throws in the Epilepsy. Seriously, the fact that the contrast of the game COMPLETELY changes once your reach both Hexagonester and Hyper Hexagonester makes it extremely hard on your eyes to register the color change without blinking a million times. The godsend is the Beatbox Effect not changing, however, the RPM increases even more. And we aren’t even on the third main level.

~HEXAGONEST~
This level is hard, to say the least. The screen tilt is eliminated, eliminating an advantage of seeing more ground in a somewhat 3D isometric screen to a full 2D screen. The RPM change is slow at first, but increasingly gets faster every sub-level is achieved. The Beatbox Effect is Spinning Hell, as it becomes more intense than it ever was. All of this just to maybe cause you to have enough. What follows is utter hell.

~HYPER HEXAGONEST~
There is a reason that only 3.1% of the entire Steam community has completed this level. The RPM increases drastically, making it almost impossible to follow the incoming walls. The BGM is the same as Hexagonest (which doesn’t help much), and the grey tone makes it really hard on your eyes throughout the whole level, unlike in Hyper Hexagoner levels, where the color is only harsh on the transitions. One wrong move, and back to the beginning you go. What makes this so addicting, yet infuriatingly hard is how often you will die at the sub-level Point. POINT!!! Only those who have mastered the gameplay can have a chance of defeating this mosnter. What follows is glorious, yet equally as mysterious.

~QUINTHEXAGON~
There is actually no official name for this stage. Many call it “The Void”, or simply “Black and White Hexagon”. Whatever it is, it is beautiful If you manage to play through this level for what it has to offer, you will be greatly impressed. There is no intense Beatbox Effect-heck, there barely is any Effect visible at all. What is visible is how the stage doesn’t mainly turn during the level, making it extremely hard to predict where the sides are to come. A “Spin Burst”-a sudden and quick screen turn-may occasionally happen to throw you out of your zone and can easily catch you off guard. MInd you that the stage is still at a full 2D screen, so the predictability even further increases. What makes this level special, however, is that the BGM is eerie, but calming, exclaiming that you beat one of the hardest games known to mankind. EVER. Then you die and witness the ending cutscene of the game. THE END!! 🙂

So there you have it. Now go out there and play the damn game!! Just…

…don’t ragequit.
