The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Guide

How to Duplicate Items for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

How to Duplicate Items

Overview

Using scrolls you can duplicate items!

What do I need?

Time for a celebration! CHEESE FOR EVERYONE!

You’ll need these things:

  • At least two of the same scrolls
  • An item you wish to duplicate

The scrolls you want to use must be completely identical. It doesn’t work if one of your scroll does “Fire Damage on Touch 80pts” while the other scroll does “Frost Damage on Target 35pts”. Neither will “Shock Damage on Target 110pts” and “Shock Damage on Target 70pts” do. Two scrolls, both which does “Dispel on Self 75pts” will work. Note that it isn’t restricted to certain scrolls, any two scrolls will do, for as long as they are used for magic.

The item you want to duplicate could be anything you can have in your inventory. From apples to watermelons, from iron daggers to daedric warhammers, from calipers to tongs, even scrolls can be duplicated!

However, there are certain exceptions, these are:

  • Nirnroot
  • Stolen Items
  • Quest Items
  • Weapons and Armor that has been damaged or repaired at all

Where can I find them?

Scrolls can be bought at certain merchants, look for shops that sells spells (haha), they’ll most likely also sell scrolls. Buy the cheap scrolls since they are more common, or if the merchants has two identical scrolls for sale, buy both of them or more.

I don’t think I have to tell you where you can find items you wish to duplicate, it’s up to you to find them.

What should I do with them?

Now for the tricky part, this may require a few attempts before you’ll understand what to do. Now read carefully, it is easy to get certain parts of the tutorial wrong.

STEP 001
Open up your inventory

STEP 002
Go to the Misc. tab

STEP 003
Select whichever scrolls you have two of or more.

STEP 004
Drop the item you wish to duplicate.

STEP 005
Watch as two or more items appear after you close the inventory.

Heads will roll!

Can’t I just use the Console instead?

You can always use the console to spawn items yourself, but this guide is for people who don’t want to bother learning how to use the console. Since the process is rather complex (compared to this duplicating exploit), I think you’d better off sticking to this duplicating exploit until you feel confident with getting into deeper stuff.

Still, here is a mini-guide on spawning stuff with the console:

001. Open the console (you know how to do that, right?[www.uesp.net])

002. Open the Steam in-game web-browser and go to [link]

003. Use the search function to look for the desired item.

004. Look for a 8-diget hexadecimal number (like 000228F0), you can’t copy paste the number into Oblivion, so memorize it.

005. Go back to your game, and type in “player.placeatme <your Object ID> 1”

You should now have a single item your desired spawned in front of you. If you tried out “player.placeatme 228F0 1” (you don’t need the first zeros) you would spawn one Wabbajack in front of you.

You can also use “player.additem <Object ID> <quantity>” or “player.equipitem <Object ID>” to spawn item(s) directly into your inventory.

If this guide didn’t make sense, try out a different guide, like this one[www.uesp.net].

But isn’t that cheating?

Yes it is cheating (or exploiting if you will), but there is no shame in cheating in Oblivion, YouTube will confirm it in many ways beyond your imagination.

It doesn’t work!

You sure? Try again and DO what the steps tells you to do.

Still doesn’t work? Very well:

  • You must have have two completely identical scrolls
  • You must equip the scrolls from the inventory tab
  • You shouldn’t equip your scrolls from the magic tab
  • You can’t duplicate specific items, as I mentioned earlier
  • You shouldn’t close your inventory while you try to do the exploit
  • You shouldn’t equip/drink/eat/use the item to duplicate it
  • If you try to duplicate a stack, then you MUST have more identical scrolls than items inside the stack

If it doesn’t explain your problem, tough luck, you might as well try to learn how to use the console in Oblivion.

What else do I need to know?

Duplicating items isn’t safe, you can end up crashing the game if you duplicate with about 2000 scrolls. Crashing of course is only a short-term problem, but there is a more serious long-term problem.

If you keep duplicating items in mass quantities, you can end up with bloating your save file, which can lead to corrupting your save. If you want to experiment with duplicating, like flooding a room with venison or have a giant feast of sweetrolls, create a new save so that you can still play without losing anything.

Duplicating with about only 50 scrolls is quite harmless, at least for your save-file.

If you drop a stack of items, the items duplicated will be divided into stacks, like if you use 100 scrolls to duplicate a stack of 10 arrows, you will get 10 stacks of quivers with 10 arrows. I wouldn’t go in detail about it, math is boring.

Some items with scripted enchantments (like the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal) will not duplicate their scripted enchantment, so you can’t have two Gray Cowls where both of them turns you into the Gray Fox.

What can I do with this exploit?

Here is some suggestions for both practical and entertaining use:

Practical
Rare / limited ingredients
Amber or Madness ore for smiths in the Shivering Isles
Lockpicks for near-infinite attempts to unlock doors, or moneymaking
Enchanted arrows, or arrows in general
Soul gems or Azura’s Star
Varla / Welkynd Stones
Highly valuable / limited clothes for enchanting
Powerful potions / poisons

Entertaining
Giant sweetroll feast
Make your own skooma den, without addicts though
Flood a house with watermelons or pumpkins
Fill an inn with poisoned apples, effectively killing anyone who goes into the inn to eat
Duplicate skulls after Sheogorath teleports you a thousand feets above, watch them as both you and the skulls fall
Mass tribute lettuce and yarn to the nearest Sheogorath statue
Decorate a room with pants and crumbled pieces of paper (if you know what I mean)
Flood Falanu Hlaalu’s house with Mort Flesh and bones

The only limit is your fantasy, and computer power. Use this exploit at your own discretion, you are responsible for all damage you do to your own save-game. I can’t guarantee that this exploit works in real life, but if it does, you are responsible for what ever havoc you wreck (do share a picture of it before you get caught).

Now I’ll be off, see you.
