[1.4] Tailoring Guide – Hats / Shirts / Pants / Boots / Dyes

Overview

A complete guide to style in Stardew Valley! Learn how to unlock the new 1.4 Tailoring mechanic and see the crafting recipes of over 300 clothing items!

Tailoring

Unlocking Tailoring

The Tailoring feature is unlocked the day after you receive your first piece of cloth. Emily will greet you at the door the following morning saying that you can use her sewing machine at her house any time (9:00am – 8:00pm).
The sewing machine is located at the bottom right corner of Emily’s house. With the sewing machine you can craft hats, shirts, pants, skirts, and shorts. To craft an item you will need one piece of cloth plus another item that corresponds to a specific clothing item (you can see the items needed in this guide).

Using the Machine

To use the sewing machine, you must first interact with the machine to open up the crafting window. Place the cloth in the feed of the sewing machine. The other item will go in the spool of the machine and will be consumed upon use! Finally, click the power button and the new clothing item will be crafted.

Certain pieces of clothing can be dyed a different color. Check the “Dyes” section for more information.

Hats [Tailoring]

To craft hats, you will need one piece of cloth in the feed of the sewing machine, plus one specific item (based on the hat) in the spool. The item required for each hat can be seen in the following table:

Most of the jackets can only have the sleeves dyed. Shirts with a color in the name, like the Orange Gi, will only let you dye things that are NOT that color (in this case only the blue can be dyed). Of these 49 shirts, only the Heart Shirt can be chosen at Character Creation, however, if this shirt is chosen at Character creation, the heart CANNOT be dyed. You MUST craft the shirt in order to dye the heart.
* Only the top can be dyed
** Only the bottom can be dyed

Other than the shirts available at the Character Creation screen, and the shirts that are dyeable, there are about 120 other shirts that cannot be dyed but have some really fun patterns! • As of update 1.4, any boots found in mine chests can be repurchased at the Adventurer’s Guild
  • Defense lowers the damage the player takes
  • Immunity lowers the chance of the player receiving a status effect

It is now possible to transfer the stats of one pair of boots to another. This allows you to wear your favorite pair of boots with the best possible stats. Place boots you want to wear in the feed and the boots with the desired stats in the spool. ITEM IN THE SPOOL WILL BE CONSUMED! The new pair of boots will be called “Custom-tailored <name of boots>”

Special Items

There are certain clothing items that can only be obtained in special ways.

Prismatic Shard

The Prismatic Shard can be used to craft 5 different pieces of clothing that change colors. You will need one cloth plus a shard to craft these clothes. There is no way to determine which piece you will get. This means you can end up having duplicates if attempting to get all of them. Resetting the day and trying again is one way to try to get all of them without wasting the precious mineral (it’s how I managed to capture all 5).

Magic Suit Set

There is a special set of clothes that can only be obtained through marrying Emily and unlocking her 14-heart event. Once you reach 14 hearts with Emily, the quest “Errand for your Wife” will begin. You must give her 200 pieces of Fiber. She will then craft the outfit for you and gift it to you in 3 days when you enter the farmhouse between 8:00pm and midnight.

Emily’s Magic Hat
Emily’s Magic Shirt
Genie Pants
Emily’s Magic Boots

  • The shoes have Defense (+4) and Immunity (+4)
  • The Genie Pants is the only item in this set that can be crafted at the sewing machine. It can be crafted using either a Star Fruit or an Ancient Fruit in the spool

Lucky Purple Shorts

You know the purple shorts Mayor Lewis asks you to find for him? You can turn those into wearable shorts! Place the Lucky Purple Shorts in the feed and a Gold Bar in the spool at the sewing machine. This will produce “Trimmed Lucky Purple Shorts”.

To get the shorts: wait for the 3rd of Summer for Mayor Lewis to mail you the quest “Mayor’s Shorts”. He asks you to find his Lucky Purple Shorts. They can be found in Marnie’s bedroom. You will need to have at least two hearts with Marnie to enter her bedroom to get the shorts.

Desert Trader

Update 1.4 added a new trading post in the desert! You can visit the desert once the Bus starts working again after completing the Vault bundles. Completing all the Vault bundles costs 42,500g.
The items you can purchase are:

Item
Cost
Day Sold
x50 Omni Geode
Everyday
x333 Omni Geode
Odd Days
x333 Omni Geode
Even Days

Note: The shop is closed Winter 15-17 because of the Night Market

Dyes

A handful of shirts as well as most pants can be dyed. There are two ways to dye clothes. The first is by using the dye pots located on the right wall in the same room as the sewing machine. The second way is to use the sewing machine itself.

Dye Pots

Interacting with the pots will bring up the dye interface. You must be wearing the items you want to dye. Next you will need to place one item in each of the pots matching the colors of each pot. An item that matches the color of a pot will have a small colored circle at the corner of the item. Once all items have been placed in the pots, the dye bottle will light up. Clicking this bottle will bring up the color bars menu (similar to when creating character for the first time) letting you choose the color you wish to dye the items to.

All the items in the pots will be consumed upon use!

Example of items that can be used for each pot:

  • RED: Apple, Salmonberry, Cranberries, Peach
  • ORANGE: Orange, Copper Ore, Copper Bar
  • YELLOW: Sap, Cheese, Goat Cheese, Gold Ore, Gold Bar
  • GREEN: Fiber, Green Algae, Seaweed
  • BLUE: Blueberry, Blackberry, Tuna
  • PURPLE: Pomegranate, Refined Quartz, Iridium Ore, Grape

Make sure to keep a lot of minerals in case you want to use them to dye clothes.

Sewing Machine

Dyeing using the sewing machine is a little trickier, but can save drastically on dye items. The item that you want to dye goes in the feed and the dye item goes in the spool. When you use the sewing machine, the original item’s color and the dye item’s color are combined. For example, if you originally had a white shirt, and the dye item was red, your shirt will now be pink. You can repeat this process until you get the shade you want. Using a Prismatic Shard as the dye item will open up the color bars menu similar to the dye pots

Here is a potential color progression adding the following dye items:
Note: I created this using Illustrator and it does not reflect the actual colors in the game

Item Locations

This is a list of some of the harder-to-find items:

  • Caviar can be made using Sturgeon Roe in a Preserves Jar
  • Blobfish, Spook Fish, and Midnight Squid can be caught in the submarine at the Night Market (Winter 15-17)
  • The Pearl can be obtained while fishing in the submarine during the Night Market. Chance to catch is 0.4%. One can be obtained from the Mermaid Show by clicking the shells in the sequence: 1-5-4-2-3
  • The Treasure Chest has a small chance of appearing in a finishing treasure chest
