Overview
Feeling overwhelmed while trapped in a school haunted by a missing girl’s curse? Can’t find a certain item? Feel like screaming into the void as your protagonist dies for the twentieth time in a row? …well, hopefully this guide has something to help you deal with all of that~
Getting Started
Misao is a very non-linear horror game- many items can be picked up in any order. Your main goal is to find six key items, so I’ve divided this guide into sections based on what actions you need to take to get a specific key item. If you are playing blind, more than likely you’ll find yourself taking steps to get more than one key item at once.
I’m not sure if anyone will really consider the names of the Key Items a spoiler, but just in case anyone would… I’ve simply named them Item #1, #2, #3… etc. It’s just numbered in the order they’ll show up on your Key Items list in your inventory, labeled from top to bottom.
I have made an attempt to keep plot elements unspoiled, but there’s only so much I can do, so please keep that in mind if you are just looking for one puzzle solution/item.
General Tips:
* Make liberal use of the Quicksave option. You can die really easily while playing this game and (to my knowledge) it won’t let you Quicksave in an unwinnable situation.
* Make sure to visit Onigawara after every major accomplishment or before you exit the game. He’s in the Student Council Room on the fourth floor (where your character starts the game), but he ALSO shows up on the first floor in the lowest room… so pick whichever area is closest.
* If you find yourself stuck and don’t quite want to resort to this guide just yet… try talking to the girl in the Library on the Second Floor (hereafter refered to as ‘Miss Library’) and asking her for Hints. Her hints are usually pretty good without directly telling you the answer.
* If you aren’t used to playing games that are like this one- don’t be hard on yourself or too intimidated if you die a lot. If you weren’t supposed to die a lot, there wouldn’t be 42 different death scenes and a list that fills up as you trigger them all. Have fun- use your Quicksave and do stupid things!
Easiest to Hardest to Obtain Key Items:
(Of course, these are just in my personal opinion- my reasoning is hidden by spoilers because I mention some of the things you need to do to get it.)
* #1/#6 (There aren’t any puzzles, and there aren’t many hazards.)
* #5 (Fairly simple ‘puzzles,’ and you just need to collect a few items.)
* #3 (Only slightly harder to get than the Snapped Hairtie, if only because you need to open up the Lab first.)
* #4 Getting the White Lilies is a bit of a hassle, the you need to run around the school for a bit… but I don’t think it’s too hard to get this.
* #2 (You need to get two items that are hiddem behind puzzles in the process- and you have to get chased by Hanako… so yeah, biggest pain for me).
Dangers:
While there are many ways to die in the game (42, not counting multiple ways to reach the same death or the Bad End)- I will not be covering all of those in this guide. Instead, in each section, I’ll put a little ‘Dangers’ section to warn you about deaths you can bump into really easily. In a few cases, where there is an active danger in a room you need to go into or a hazard of that sort, I’ll warn you within the guide itself.

Things You Need To Do In Multiple Routes
Access the Computer Room
(This room is not technically -blocked-, but you need to take care of something small before you can really use it)
* Enter the Computer Room on the Third Floor and watch a scene.
* Exit the Computer Room, take the fire extinguisher that is out in the Third Floor hallway and watch another scene.
* Examine the pink-screened computer and watch a scene, then watch one more scene as you walk towards the exit.
Access the Laboratory
* On the Second Floor, walk right and past Classroom 2-B.
* In the room with the Lockers, watch a scene and then exit to your right again.
* Once in the Laboratory, examine the shiny object on the ground to pick up the CD-ROM.
* Exit and go to the Computer Room on the Third Floor.
* Use the CD-ROM while standing in front of the white-glowing computer.
* Examine the same computer once more and choose ‘Disable security’ when prompted.
Get the Metal Bat
* Going into Classroom 1-A on the First Floor (go into the left side-room, then left again).
Avoid the circular shadow on the floor of the classroom, as it will kill you.
* The Metal Bat will be sitting out in the open near the top of the room- just pick it up.
Finding Item #1
* Go to Classroom 2-B on the Second Floor (go right from the stairwell).
* Check the rattling locker after you’ve opened it to get the Locker Key.
* Go to the Faculty Office on the First Floor.
* Go into the room with lockers (exit the Faculty Office on the left).
* Go to the standing locker on the far left, use the Locker Key on it.
* Pick up Important Object #1, the Cracked Cellphone.
Dangers:
* Walking in front of the locker with blood on the ground in front of it in the Locker Room.
Finding Item #2
To get this item, first you need two items- a Locked Box and a Small Key. You get get these two things in any order.
Locked Box:
* Have access to the Laboratory on the Second Floor (see above).
* Go there and then exit to the room at the bottom (the Science Room).
* Talk to the person there and then choose ‘Yes’ when prompted.
* Check the cabinet in the middle of the top of the room and choose to ‘Hide’- when prompted again ‘Give up.’
* Examine the shiny spot in the now-open cabinet and pick up the Scalpel.
* Go to the large bear costume(?) laying on the table at the bottom of the room and use the Scalpel on it. Once you have cut it open, examine it and ‘Hide.’
* After the scene, examine the glowing object on the table to watch another scene. (I am not sure this is -nessicary- to find the item, but since it’s right there… why not, right?)
* Go back to the Laboritory- the computer there should be glowing now. Examine it and choose ‘Yes’ to release the Salt Mandrake from one of the glass tubes.
* (The Salt Mandrake is harmless, so don’t worry about it touching you.)
* The Salt Mandrake will try and follow you- loop around the table before it gets too close and get it to walk in front of the phone.
* Once you have knocked out the Salt Mandrake, pick it up.
* CAUTION: While normally you are safe while walking through the corridor outside of Classroom 2-B unless you read the note- for some reason, while you are covered in blood, the trap will activate automatically. Enter Classroom 2-B and exit out the other door to bypass the trap.
* Go to the Cafeteria on the First Floor and head to the kitchen area. Use the Salt Mandrake on the electric grater in order to receive Salt.
* Head to the Second Floor, then go left and try to exit left. Pay attention to where the spirit appears, examine that area of the room until you get a message stating that you sense an evil presence. Use the Salt in that part of the room, then exit to the left.
* Enter the Music Room and sit at the desk that is the closest to the piano (just walk into it). Remain still while the piano plays, then receive the Locked Box from the spirit.
Small Key:
* Make sure you have Access to the Computer Room (see above).
* Go to the Boys’ Bathroom on the First Floor and examine the closed stall.
* Exit the bathroom, watch the scene, then exit the bathroom again. Head to the Library on the Second Floor.
* (If you haven’t talked to Miss Library before- talk to her and agree to be her friend.)
* Talk to Miss Library and watch the scene.
* Return to the First Floor, but go inside the Girls’ Bathroom. Knock on the closed stall door three times until you get a message, then try and exit the bathroom.
* This will summon Hanako, who will kill you if she touches you. She will remain summoned if you exit the bathroom… Personally, I always exit the bathroom, save, and then try and complete the next part. Once you complete the next part, Hanako will vanish and you’ll be safe from her.
* Get to the stall that used to be closed and pick up the glowing item inside the toilet to receive Coins.
* To to the Cafeteria on the First Floor and use the Coins on the vending machine near the back of the room to receive a Sports Drink.
* Go back to the Library on the Second Floor, then into Miss Library’s Room. Give the Sports Drink to the person resting there and receive the Small Key.
Once You Have Both Items:
* Use the Small Key in your Inventory to unlock the Box, which gives you the Warding Bell.
* Go to the Laboritory on the Second Floor (to the left) and walk behind the glass tubes, exiting to the left.
* Continue upwards into the Doll Room, examine the large blonde-haired standing doll with a red jack on to receive Item #2, the Dirty Blazer.
Dangers:
* Don’t walk too close to the phone in the Laboritory.
* Don’t walk close to the cracked window while in the Looping Hallway.
* Don’t walk behind the glass tubes without the Warding Bell in your inventory.
Washing off the Blood:
During the process of getting this item, your player character will become bloody- while it can lead to some funny dialogue, it can also lead to less-favorable outcomes. To wash yourself clean, head to the First Floor, out to the Courtyard, then just stand in the water in front of the Shrine- you’ll wash off the blood automatically.
Finding Item #3
* Have Access to the Laboratory (see above).
* Examine the dark gray creature in one of the glass tubes near the top of the screen, which will give you the Mandrake Bomb.
* Make sure you have the Metal Bat (see above).
* Go down the stairs until you are in the Underground section of the school.
* Keep going until you reach an entrance that is blocked by smashed boulders, then use the Mandrake Bomb.
* Use the Metal Bat on the Mandrake Bomb, then quickly move to the opposite side of the room (you should have plenty of time, so you don’t even have to dash.)
* Go through the entrance that the bomb cleared and continue on, exiting the next room to the right.
* While you are on the ledge, walk until you see a mushroom growing by itself. Stand in front of it and walk off the ledge (by pressing down).
* Enter the cave you fell in front of, pick up Item #3, the
* Exit through the top, examine/jump off the ledge, and you’ve returned to the start of the Underground and can continue on your way.
Dangers:
* While in the Underground, don’t follow the girl who appears in front of you and walks upward once you reached the room you had to use the Mandake Bomb to enter.
* There are some slow-moving ‘zombie’ spirits that will appear in places to prevent back-tracking.
Finding Item #4
* On the First Floor, there will be a paper that falls on the ground when you get near the top of the area. Pick it up to receive the Board Notice.
* Go to the Rooftop and examine a shiny spot on a discarded schoolbag to pick up Seeds.
* Make sure you have Access to the Laboratory on the Second Floor (see above).
* Walk into the Laboratory- you won’t get very far into it before something falls on the ground. Examine it to pick up the Plant Enrichment.
* Enter the Library on the Second Floor, then enter Miss Library’s Room by exiting through the right side of the screen.
* Stand near the dirt-filled flowerpot and use the Seeds and Plant Enrichment.
* Exit the room and re-enter, then pick the Purple Lilies out of the flowerpot.
* Go to the Art Room on the Third Floor and use the Purple Lilies on the paint set that is sitting on one of the desks to change them into White Lilies.
* As SOON as you paint the lilies, get ready to dash out of the room! Get running straight up once you exit the room and don’t stop until you are safe in the Computer Room- you are free to continue on as usual after this chase sequence.
* Using the Board Notice as a guide, place White Lilies on the correct desks in Classrooms 1-A (First Floor, left side), 2-B (Second Floor, right side) and 3-C (Third Floor).
* Once you have placed all the White Lilies correctly, you will get a message telling you to head to the Rooftop- go there.
* Speak to the spirits on the Rooftop, then pick up Item #4, the Torn Ribbon Tie.
Dangers:
* Don’t run into the spirit that falls into the hallway before Classroom 1-A- but she will vanish after you’ve placed all the White Lilies.
* Avoid the shadow sliding around on the groun in Classroom 1-A.
White Lily Placement:
Finding Item #5
* Make sure you have the Metal Bat (see above).
* Go to the Principal’s Office on the Fourth Floor and use the Metal Bat on the vase of flowers to get the Emergency Exit Key.
* Go back to the First Floor and through the right side-room. Make your way to the locked door at the end of a long hallway, then use the Emergency Exit Key. Just like the warning paper in the first right side-room says, “Don’t look back.” Go through the now-unlocked door.
* Once your’re inside the Gymnasium, watch a scene. Choose ‘Watch’ when prompted.
* Walk up on stage after the scene is over and examine the glowing spirit- follow it once it starts moving. Make sure to remember not to look behind you as you exit the long hallway.
* Follow the glowing spirit up the stairs to the Third Floor then examine it- it will bring you Item #5, the Snapped Hairtie.
* Make sure to examine the glowing spirit one more time for a story-related scene.
Dangers:
* There’s a spirit that appears in the room leading to the Classroom- avoid letting her touch you.
* Choosing ‘Help’ during the scene in the Gymnasium.
Finding Item #6
* Talk to Ayaka in the Faculty Room on the First Floor.
* Go to Classroom 2-B on the Second Floor (go right from the stairwell).
* Open the rattling Locker.
* Visit the Infirmary on the First Floor and talk to the people there.
* Follow Mr. Kurata’s suggestion and head to the Faculty Room.
* After examining Mr. Kurata’s desk, return to the Infirmary.
* After some dialogue, you will obtain Key Item #6, the Mysterious Bundle.
Dangers:
* Opening the Locker in Classroom 2-B while covered in blood (from a different quest).
Completing the Ritual/Endgame
* Go to the Courtyard on the First Floor, then enter the Shrine near the back.
* If you happen to be bloody, you will automatically wash off in the water in front of the Shrine, which happens to be exactly what you need to do to open it.
* Examine the board near the back of the shrine. Choose to offer the six Key Items when prompted.
* Exit the Shrine, then go and talk to Onigawara- he’s right there in the lower entryway on the First Floor (though, untested, I think it would work if you visited him in the Student Council Room on the Fourth Floor).
At this point, you need to choose to sacrifice Tohma (resting in Library’s Bedroom) or Mr. Kurata (resting in the Infirmary). The correct choice is Mr. Kurata– but feel free to choose the wrong person and watch the Bad Ending.
* Go to the person you’ve chosen to sacrifice, talk to them, then choose ‘Yes’ when prompted.
* (If you played as a male character, you may find that you have an extra step or two, but they are pretty self-explanitory. Just know that, while playing a male, if you have to choose to save someone, choose Tohma to get the Normal Ending.)
* Head back to the Shrine and watch the ending. Assuming you got the Normal/Non-Bad Ending, the game will unlock the Truth option in the main menu.
The Truth
The Truth is pretty much an epilogue- you are mostly watching scenes play out. Your goal is to touch the three gravestones on the main ‘island’ to make a bridge appear to the upper island- there is an additional scene and scenario if you use the bridge to go to the ‘island’ to the right, but you don’t need to do it to complete The Truth.
* Watch the opening scene and proceed upwards. Once you have control, you can save your game by examining the pillar of light on the main ‘island.’ As far as I have experienced, there is no way to die in The Truth, so saving is not as important as it is in the main game.
Gravestones (Numbered from Left to Right):
You can do any of these three in any order.
* Examine and choose to touch Gravestone #1 – Kudoh’s.
* Watch some scenes, then head upward once you’re in control of your character again. Talk to Kudoh, then watch the scene that will bring the scenario to a close.
* Examine and choose to touch Gravestone #2 – Yoshino’s
* The beginning of the scenario will be slightly different depending on whether your protagonist is male or female.
* As the male protagonist- watch the scene play out, then exit (or choose to examine Misao first) the room and watch another scene.
* As the female protagonist-
* Pick up the glowing items from the urinals- the Metal Bat on the left, the Coins in the center and the Salt from the right. If you are playing as the male protagonist, all you need is the Salt, but if you’re playing the female protagonist, all you need is the Metal Bat.
* Walk up to one of the Misao clones and use the Salt or Metal Bat, then do the same for the other two.
* Talk to Yoshino, then watch the scene that will bring the scenario to a close.
* Examine and choose to touch Gravestone #3 – Saotome’s.
* Watch some scenes, then exit the bathroom stall by interacting with the door. Open the closed stall and pick up the Metal Bat, then try and exit the bathroom. Use the Metal Bat on the bathroom exit to leave.
* Watch a scene, then go and talk to Saotome, then watch the scene that will bring the scenario to a close.
Ending The Truth
* Once you have finished all three scenarios connected to the gravestones on the main ‘island,’ use the newly-formed bridge to head upwards.
* Midway through, you’ll receive the Hand Mirror from Onigawara.
* Examine the solitary grave on the upper island and choose to touch it to proceed to the endgame (this is the last point where you can back out and do the optional stuff on the right ‘island’ or save, which the game will warn you about).
* Watch some events play out, then talk to Misao to trigger the final scenes and finish The Truth.
The Right ‘Island’ (Optional)
Achievements
Completion Achievements
These are achievements for doing things like finishing the game, plus one achievement you need to complete in order to finish the game anyway.
* Repulsive – Summon Hanako (Placed here because you have to encounter her to finish the game. Knock three times on the closed stall in the first-floor girls’ bathroom, then try to exit. Avoid Hanako and examine the toilet in the stall she came out of to get something you need and get this achievement.)
* Normal End – Finish the main game while avoiding the Bad End with the male protagonist.
* Normal End 2 – Finish the main game while avoiding the Bad End with the female protagonist.
* Bad End – During the endgame, choose to sacrifice Tohma and then complete the game.
* Special Friend – Finish the Truth epilogue with the male protagonist.
* Precious Friend – Finish the Truth epilogue with the female protagonist.
Death Achievements
You need to die in certain specific ways in order to get these achievements- make sure you’re using your saves/quicksaves! If you need more information, see my Death Traps guide- but the basics are under a spoiler.
* For the Grub- Examine the meal in the Cafeteria and choose to eat it.
* Hide and Seek- When hiding from the Doctor in the Laboratory, ‘Hide’ in the cardboard box.
* Spirits’ Temptation- Two deaths (as far as I know)- examine the shoes on the roof and also get caught by the Falling Ghost in the corridor before Class 1-A.
* Helping Hand- When you get to Kudoh’s scene in the Gymnasium, choose to ‘Help.’
* In Concert- In the Music Room, play the piano.
Random Achievements
…I couldn’t think of anything else to call this section.
* My First Quicksave – Quicksave for the first time (considering how easy it is to die and how many times they seem to tell you how to do this, I doubt anyone will miss this one)
* Baggage Check – Check your Key Items in your inventory.
* G-R-O-S-S! – Examine any toilet (I think urinals also work).
* A Work of Parody – Read “The Lazy-Eyed Ranger.” (It’s in Miss Library’s room, which can be accessed on the right side of the Library on the second floor.)
* Savage – Refuse to help Yoshino when she’s in a bad situation. (You’ll eventually have to say ‘yes’ to helping her anyway.)
* Memory – Check the right side of the right bookshelf (one with the books facing outward) in the Library to read a certain diary.
* Good Listener – Use the ‘Talk’ option on Miss Library (not the ‘Hints’) until she starts repeating herself.
* Another Self – After you have access to the Doll Room, which is accessed by going behind the specimen tubes in the Lab with the proper item to keep you from getting killed, keep going. You’ll find a small room with someone floating in a tube- examine the back of it for an achievement.
* Pay Your Way – During the Truth epilogue, during the scene when you’ve touched Yoshino’s grave and are trying to stop Misao from tormenting her- pick up the Coins and attempt to use them on one of the Misao-clones.
* Release – Complete Kurata’s scenario by touching the optional grave on the right island during The Truth.
