Super Meat Boy Guide

Achievement Guide for Super Meat Boy for Super Meat Boy

Achievement Guide for Super Meat Boy

Overview

Achievements are fun! This guide will feature a list of all the Achievements in Super Meat Boy, with some additional information about them.

Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to list all the achievements that are obtainable in Super Meat Boy, and give more detailed information about them than what the game’s own Achievements page has to offer. Plus, this kind of list allows for people who have not unlocked some of the Achievements to see and admire the fancy pictures in color! That is important, isn’t it? It isn’t? Well, damn…

Warp Zones

On some levels throughout the game you may come across a strange portal that sucks you into a Warp Zone. These are special levels that contain 2 Bandages each, and completing enough of them unlocks achievements. Although character Warp Zones have Achievements of their own, they do count toward these Achievements, same as retro Warp Zones, as confirmed by Steam user The Festive Potato.

Nostalgia
– Awarded after unlocking a single Warp Zone. No need to complete it for this one.

Living In the Past
– Awarded after completing 5 retro Warp Zones.

Old School
– Awarded after completing 10 retro Warp Zones.

Retro Rampage
– Awarded after completing all 15 retro Warp Zones.

Glitch Worlds

Chapters 1-6 each have one special level called Glitch World, which are harder to complete than regular levels. Because of this, and the fact that even unlocking these levels requires some effort, completing each of these levels is worthy of an Achievement.

N#7*<1!23
– Beat Glitch World in The Forest.

&*>?1$
– Beat Glitch World in The Hospital.

(=+66&1$
– Beat Glitch World in The Salt Factory.

^**5%_=+12
– Beat Glitch World in Hell.

*|-0&&
– Beat Glitch World in Rapture.

N&8^2^%$1“

Speedruns

During Steam Summer Camp event in 2011, a special Achievement called Medium Rare was added to the game. After the event, four more Achievements were added with similar titles, each requiring you to “spend as little time as possible” in their respective Chapters. Sounds easy? Try it yourself!

I am not going to try to guess the overall times for each Chapter because others have already done it[gaming.stackexchange.com], and even those times have proven to be inaccurate. Remember that your total time is calculated from both Light and Dark Worlds, and that warp zones and glitch levels do not count.

Because the question of the correct thresholds seem to pop up every now and then, I sent the game’s programmer Tommy Refenes http://tommyrefenes.tumblr.com/post/139128838372/hey-tommy-do-you-remember-how-you-implemented-the[tommyrefenes.tumblr.com] (yes I made a typo there) on http://tommyrefenes.tumblr.com/[tommyrefenes.tumblr.com], asking if he remembers how these achievements were implemented. He was kind enough to reply:

I’m pretty sure it just does a per chapter average and compares it to some value we put in. What those values are, I don’t know…they are probably just the cumulative level par minus a few seconds.

In the end it doesn’t really matter how it works because after all, there isn’t any special trick to this; all you need to do is speedrun the living hell out of the levels. Do note that A-ranking all levels in a chapter isn’t enough, but you need to consistently slice off seconds until you unlock the achievement. Pick levels that you’ve only barely got A+ rank in, and experiment with different characters to complete them as fast as possible.

Rare
– Spend as little time as possible in The Forest

Medium Rare
– Spend as little time as possible in The Hospital

Medium
– Spend as little time as possible in The Salt Factory

Medium Well
– Spend as little times as possible in Hell

Well Done
– Spend as little time as possible in Rapture

No Death Runs

As if Super Meat Boy wasn’t already challenging enough, there are Achievements for completing each Chapter without dying. The levels can be completed in any order, using any characters (excluding Steve and Meat Ninja). Warp zones, glitch worlds and bosses don’t need to be completed for these Achievements to unlock. There are separate Achievements for Light and Dark world chapters.

Getting these achievements requires you to beat all the normal levels of a chapter in one sitting without dying even once. If you die, you will have to play ALL the levels again; replaying just the level you died on doesn’t suffice. The order in which you beat the levels doesn’t matter, and you can “cheat” by exiting the level or changing character to escape death.

Light World

Wood Boy
– Complete The Forest without dying.

Needle Boy
– Complete The Hospital without dying.

Salt Boy
– Complete The Salt Factory without dying.

Brimstone Boy
– Complete Hell without dying.

Maggot Boy
– Complete Rapture without dying.

Dead Boy
– Complete The End without dying.

Girl Boy
– Complete Cotton Alley without dying.

Dark World

Squirrel Boy
– Complete The Forest Dark World without dying.

Blood Clot Boy
– Complete The Hospital Dark World without dying.

Missile Boy
– Complete The Salt Factory Dark World without dying.

Demon Boy
– Complete Hell Dark World without dying.

Zombie Boy
– Complete Rapture Dark World without dying.

Dr.Fetus Boy
– Complete The End Dark World without dying.

Impossible Boy
– Complete Cotton Alley Dark World without dying.

In case you would like to attempt some of these, here’s an awesome guide about No Death/Iron Man Runs: [link]

Completion

As much fun as it was, even Super Meat Boy has to end. Fortunately the final push has it’s own Achievements, and not just one but…well, some.

The End
– Defeat Dr. Fetus in Light World.

The Real End
– Defeat Dr. Fetus in Dark World.

Suffragette
– Complete Cotton Alley Light World.

Seneca Falls
– Complete Cotton Alley Dark World.

Golden God
– 100% the game. Keep in mind that while beating each Glitch World adds 1% to total completion, they do not count towards getting Golden God. You can check your progress by selecting Statistics from Main Menu. If you’d like to join Super Meat Boy 100% Steam group, leave a message in this thread.

Special

These Achievements don’t require you to complete any specific section of the main game.

The Kids Xmas!
– Complete any level of “The Kids Xmas” chapter in Super Meat World. Hint: on level 1-3 Sweater you can take a shortcut by going over the pillars. You still need to look out for the saws, and going too high will kill you. It’s still a lot easier than taking the honest route.

The Golden Gift!
– Complete all levels in “The Kids Xmas” chapter in Super Meat World in one play session. I mean, IN ONE PLAY SESSION. As the name of the chapter suggests, you play as The Kid and the levels are HARD. Some of you might have noticed that more people have unlocked The Golden Gift than The Kid character. This is because obtaining The Golden Gift was an objective on 30th December in The Great Gift Pile event in 2011, which led to many people cheating.

Well look at you!
– Congratulations! You just changed the world, whatever that means… Typing “petaphile” on character selection screen (the one BEFORE starting a level) allows you to play as Tofu Boy and unlock this Achievement. If you type it too slowly it won’t work! Tofu Boy is a joke character added as a response to PETA’s Super Tofu Boy, a Super Meat Boy parody game.
