01. Ian (0:33) – Shady Sands Entrance
HP:50; AC:14; AP:10, Carry: 200
Combat Skills: Big Guns (56) – N/A no animation set, Melee (70), Sm Guns (73), Unarmed (75)
Rec’d Weapons: Pistols, and Knives and Power Fists
LOCATION: Ian is found in Shady Sands, just to the east of Vault 13 when you first leave for the wasteland. He’s been staying with Aradesh’s people after sustaining an injury from his time with the Crimson Caravan. He can be hired on by paying 200 caps or convincing him that he’ll get a ‘piece of the action’. Ian’s skills are in small guns, melee and unarmed weaponry, any of which he’ll be effective with. Even though Submachine Guns fall under the weapons he can use, don’t give him one if you’re not a fan of collateral damage from your side of the field! Big guns are also among his skill set, but Ian’s model doesn’t have animations for them, so assume he won’t use large firearms.
02. Dogmeat (1:26) – Junktown Casino Entrance
HP:50; AC:21; AP:13, Carry: 175
Combat Skills: Unarmed (74)
Rec’d Weapons: N/A He’s a freakin dog
LOCATION: Dogmeat is the second companion, and is found in Junktown, which is south of Vault 13. After you reach the casino area, off to the right of the entrance you’ll see a panicked man by the name of Phil, who’s house is fiercly guarded by a stray dog. This dog happens to be our canine companion, who can be recruited by simply wearing leather armor, or giving him some iguana-on-a-stick! Dogmeat only has one weapon, and that’s his face. Best not to let the fact that he’s a dog fool you though, Dogmeat is just as effective in combat as most humans, and can fit up to 3 attacks into a single turn. The downside of dogmeat though is that he cannot be issued commands like other companions in Fallout 1 and cannot heal himself with stimpaks either, so once he’s a companion, he’s there until death. If you know the next encounter is going to be difficult, you can coax him into a room/building and close the door to keep him safe. Even with his downsides, Dogmeat is a great addition especially early game!
03. Tycho (02:22) – Junktown Skum Pitt
HP:60; AC:22; AP:8, Carry: 175
Combat Skills: Melee (70), Sm Guns (56), Unarmed (65)
Rec’d Weapons: Rifles, Shotguns, Handguns & Spears
LOCATION: Along with Dogmeat, you can find the third companion, Tycho, in Junktown as well. This weathered ranger is located north of where Dogmeat is found, in the Skum Pitt during its business hours. To recruit him, all you need to do is agree to help Killian with Gizmo, then speak to Tycho about cleaning up the town. At the mention of justice, he’ll join without a second thought! As expected, Tycho being a desert ranger from the Mojave region makes him both a useful source of information, and a formidable ally. Tycho has skills in melee, small guns, and unarmed. It’s recommended to equip him with rifles and shotguns, though he is capable of using handguns and spears as well. On top of his wasteland knowledge, Tycho also has the most hit points of all other NPC companions too. If you’re challenging yourself to have only one companion with you, Tycho is worth considering!
04. Katja (3:12) – LA Boneyard Followers’ Library
HP:39; AC:26; AP:9, Carry: 125
Combat Skills: Lockpick (82), Melee (90), Throwing (80), Unarmed (100)
Rec’d Weapons: SMG Models (.223 Pistol, 10mm SMG, 14mm Pistol), Power Fist & Ripper
LOCATION: Katja, the fourth companion, resides in Boneyard. She can be found in the Followers’ Library, west of The Blades’ headquarters. Katja can come across as gruff at the start, but it’s mainly caution. Once you get familiar and she mentions not sticking around much longer, that is your opportunity to invite her to your party. Katja has the least amount of hit points of all the companions, however, she also has the highest values in her combat proficiencies AND UNLIKE any other companion, can pick locks for you as well! Her top skills are Lockpicking, Melee Weapons, Throwing, and Unarmed. She is capable of using firearms that have the SMG model, like the .223 pistol and 10mm Submachine Gun, but her character model isn’t setup to use things like the Desert Eagle. Equip Katja with a Power Fist or Ripper along with a pile of stimpaks and she’ll make a great glass wrecking ball.
