Overview
Are you tired of the music in Super Hexagon? Do you want something new and refreshing to help you get that personal high score? This guide will help you change the game songs to something you’d want to hear more.
Information about changing songs
- Most of you think this is cheating… If you’re trying to go for a world record, it is. But if you are just playing casually, it isn’t.
- This will permanently change your songs in Super Hexagon. If you want to revert back to the original songs, or need to fix your custom song, you must make sure to keep constant backups.
Section 1: Your song
So, you’ve gotten bored of the songs in Super Hexagon, and you want to play it to your own music, right! Well, start here.
Custom song details:
- Recommended: Make sure your song is at least 2:30 long
- The song cannot have long lengths of slience at the beginning or end
- Optional: Try to keep it relevant to the chiptune/bitpop genre (aka 8-bit sounding)
Once you’ve made sure of the details above are correct, move on to the next section.
Section 2: BPM’s
For those of you who aren’t into music, BPM stands for Beats per Minute. Each song in Super Hexagon has a set BPM that you must try to match your custom song with. You don’t have to match it, but it’s highly recommended that you do so.
- Hexagon mode has a 130 BPM
- Hexagoner mode has a 135 BPM
- Hexagonest mode has a 175 BPM
- Hyper Hexagonest mode has no set BPM, due to the pattern speeds varying too much, and the center only slowly pulsing
If you don’t know how to measure your song’s BPM, I would recommend using this BPM tool: [link] — The instructions are simple and will help you find your custom song’s BPM.
Section 3: We change songs now
Now for the moment you’ve been waiting for, we shall change the songs now!
Before we even start dealing with your music, you need to be able to see file extentions. If you are able to, you can skip this first part, otherwise continue on.
- First, go to control panel, and in the search bar, type in “file extentions”
- Once you do that, click on “Show or hide file extentions”, and a window should pop up
- Last, just uncheck “Hide extentions for known file types”
Once you are able to see file extentions, then open a couple windows, one with your song(s) in MP3 or WAV format, and the other in “C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSuper Hexagondatamusic”
Next, in the music folder, you will see 6 files with a .dat extention. These are the music files for the game. The names are as follows:
- music0.dat is for the main menu, I would personally leave this one alone Found by kwadracik
- music1.dat is the Hexagon music
- music2.dat is the Hexagoner music
- music3.dat is the Hexagonest music
- music4.dat is the Ultra Hexagonest music (the black and white level 60 seconds into Hyper Hexagonest)
- music5.dat is the Ending music, which is just Hexagonest in reverse, with a slightly higher pitch
You will want to change the names of these default files. What you must do, is add -default to the end of each of the files you plan on changing (music1-default.dat for example). Upon doing this, if you start the game now, you will hear absolutely no music, depending on what files you renamed (refer to above).
Now that the default music is gone, what do we do with your MP3 and/or WAV files that contain your custom music? You have to convert it to the OGG format for the game to read it.
Assuming you have the correct properties for your music, you must convert it to the OGG format. If you don’t know how to convert to OGG, I would recommend using this website: [link]
Or, if you know how to use Audacity to convert your file to OGG format, you may do that too, but I won’t teach you how, that’s your problem
Once you have obtained your OGG file from wherever, you will now put it in your music folder. You must rename it to one of the files mentioned in the previous section. Be very careful not to replace the original files otherwise you may be stuck with this music for a while.
Now launch Super Hexagon, and play the stage where you replaced it with your custom song. Did it work? If so, hooray! You are a song modder!

Tired of your custom songs and want the good ol’ stock music back? Just delete (or rename, if you want) your custom music file, and rename your music#-default.dat back to music#.dat, where # is the song’s file number. Re-launch Super Hexagon and witness the stock music return!
Or if you’re lazy enough to do this and don’t care about your hard work going away, you can always delete all the files in the music folder, and verify the game’s cache.
Remember our music5.dat? Well, you are only able to listen to this song once. The only time you can hear it is after you complete Hyper Hexagonest for the first time. If you already completed it at least once, there is no use in changing this file, and you can leave it alone.
Conclusion and samples
Here’s a sample of how I modded my music, I used VVVVVV’s Pushing Onward, Maze of Mayonnaise and Doctor Finkle’s Cure, Commando Steve and Penny Arcade 3’s 8-bit battle theme (not necessarily in that order)
Hopefully you found this guide helpful and are ready to customize your music!
