Overview
This is a guide to all the secret locations, and not-so-secret locations, exposed by exploding Red Barrels in the right places. It also gives a quick idea of what you’ll find inside. If you want to find the tougher hidden rooms yourself, don’t read this guide.
Introduction
This guide is to help you locate all the secret rooms in Gauntlet. So, be aware that this guide contains some spoilers. If you prefer to find all the hidden locations on your own, stop reading now…
No!!! Wait!!! First give this guide a thumbs up before you go…
K, now you can leave if you don’t want to read any spoilers.
Red Barrels: Hidden rooms are revealed by exploding the appropriate walls using a red explosive barrel. These are found sitting around the level. In fact, seeing these barrels is a good indication that there is probably an explodable wall near by. Simply put the barrel where you want it to blow up, then hit/shoot it to start the fuse, and step back.
Some of these rooms are necessary to find in order to progress through the level. The game makes these ones more obvious by placing a special spot that spawns new Red Barrels as you blow them up. This is so you can’t get yourself stuck without a Red Barrel to use.
Alright, enough of the preamble. Lets get onto the hidden walls/rooms, and what you’ll find within.
Crypts of the Sun King I — Tombs of the Risen
#1) You’ll fight through a few towers and reach a room with the first Red Barrels you’ll see. Thankfully they’ve given you a respawning Red Barrel here. Blow the left wall for a Potion, two Food, and a little Gold.
#2) Same room as the last one. Just blow the back wall for two Food, and two Keys.
#3) You’ll need to come right back for this Red Barrel for a 3rd time because in the next room (after clearing the towers that appear), you’ll find another hidden room on the back wall. You’ll find a whopping three Potions, and a Food.
Crypts of the Sun King II — The Bone Barracks
#1) Right away you will leap a cavern and kill some skeletons. There are 6 Red Barrels here. You’ll only need 2 of them, but none of them are respawning, so watch your shots. The first wall to blow is on the left, near most of the Red Barrels. You’ll find a Potion, and some Gold.
#2) The next one is in the very next room with the tables, but on the right wall. You’ll have to jump a gap to grab the Potion and a Food.
#3) Later, just after you dispatch the Lich, you’ll find three Red Barrels. Kill the skeletons, and blow the wall just around the corner from the barrels for a Potion, two Food, and some Gold. If something goes wrong and you lose those barrels, there are 4 more Red Barrels in the next room… and they have no other walls they could be used on.
Crypts of the Sun King III — The Palace of Khamun
On this level, you have a choice of which direction to go first, left or right. The order you encounter Red Barrels depends on this choice. So, let’s assume you go to the right first.
#1) In the room where you encounter 3 towers you will find 3 Red Barrels, one of which is respawning. Use one to blow the wall on the left, just up from the barrels. You will find a Potion, and some Gold.
#2) After a room with a couple towers, you’ll find a small room with 7 Red Barrels, one of which is respawning. The spot to blow is right there on the back wall where you’ll find a Key.
#3) After the room with the 4 towers, go left to the room with a few monstrous mummies. In this small room you’ll find 4 Red Barrels, one or which will respawn. The wall to blow is on the left where you’ll be treated to two Potions, a couple Food, and a nice haul of Gold.
Caverns of Mag’Ash I — The Dragons’ Realm
#1) After you clear a tower, go to the right to your first couple push blocks. In here you will find a few Red Barrels, one of which will respawn. The wall to blow is at the back of the little alcove on the right. You’ll only get one Potion, and a bit of Gold.
#2) A few more rooms and fights later, you’ll fight another pack of baddies and a tower in an area that also has a few Red Barrels. None of these respawn, so be careful or you’ll have to backtrack to/from one that does respawn. Blow the wall at the back to the left of where the barrels are/were for a Potion, a couple Food, and some Gold.
Caverns of Mag’Ash II — The Queen’s Chambers
#1) In the first area you have a fight, including a couple towers, there are 4 Red Barrels, one respawning. Take one of these back to the narrow entrance to this area, where you can blow open the left side of the lane. You’ll find a Potion, a Food, and some Gold.
#2) You’ll have quite a few battles until the next one, but when you start opening key gates you’re getting there. Right before the key gate room I like to call ‘monster cubicles’ you will see two Red Barrels, neither one respawns so be careful. Just back up and on the left rock face, you’ll find your site. Inside is the same as last time; A Potion, a Food, and some Gold.
Caverns of Mag’Ash III — Gates of Orox
This is another level where you may encounter these secrets is a different order depending on your choices of route. If you stay to your right as much as possible, this is the order:
#1) After you fight a spider queen. Head up to the left where there is a push block and three Red Barrels, one respawning. The blast wall is at the back directly up from the barrels. Inside you will find a Potion, two Food, and some Gold.
#2) When you get to the area with a push block where you are jumped by some orc juggernauts and grunt shaman, there will be two non-respawning Red Barrels here. Take one directly to the left side of this area, where you will find the place to blow it up. Inside is a Potion, two Food, and some Gold.
The Burning Temple of Dur I — The Keep of the Demon Cult
#1) You’ll fight through several rooms until you reach your first key gate and three Red Barrels. Don’t open the second key gate, we’re gonna save you the trouble by blasting around it. First blast open the left wall between the two key gates. Inside is a Potion, two Food, and some Gold.
#2) The second one is immediately after the first, and is the first time you’ll blast a second hole from inside a previously secret room. Place the barrel nice and close to the bottom wall in the secret room and blow it. No special reward for this one, except you get to keep a key as you can avoid that second key gate. Note that you had only three barrels and needed two, none of them respawn so watch your fire. There’s 4 more Red Barrels after the second key gate, but fat lot of good they did ya.
#3) After you jump a gap you’ll see 5 Red Barrels, one of which is respawning. You will need to blast in this room to get a key to progress downward, unless you followed the first two secrets, thus saving a key… so you can skip the fight against two towers within. Otherwise blast open the wall on the left with one of the barrels, and have that fight for the Key in there, and a couple Food and some Gold as well.
The Burning Temple of Dur II — The Breeding Ground
#1) After several tower fights, you’ll make your way to a corridor with 3 Red Barrels, one of which is respawning. On the back wall, to the left of the barrels, is your blast point. Inside is a Potion, a Food, and a reasonable amount of Gold.
#2) You’ll cross a drawbridge and fight three towers. Right after that you’ll see 2 Red Barrels. You’ll need both of them and they don’t respawn, so be careful or you’ll need to run all the way back for another. Detonate one around the corner at the back wall, beside the Food platter. Inside you’ll find a couple Potions, but you’re not done here.
#3) Now grab the other Red Barrel and bring it into the secret room. Blow it up against the back right side of the room, opening up a second secret room holding a Key.
#4) Continue leftward until you reach the key gates. You’ll find only one Key there, so that secret Key might come in handy. Open the gates and clear the baddies. Now you see in the upper room there is a single respawning Red Barrel. Take it straight down to where you must turn. You’ll see a few coins laying on the ground hinting at where you should blow open the wall in the corner. Do so, and you will find an alcove with mounds of Gold.
The Burning Temple of Dur III — Monastery of the Flame
You have choices as to which directions you go in what order on this level. There are four routes, two left and two right, each having an upper and lower starting point.
#1) If you go the lower left side route, you’ll clear a room with two towers, which also has 4 Red Barrels in there. You’ll be blowing a hole in the next corridor. That corridor has a single Barrel, but bring one of these 4 just in case. None of these barrel respawn so watch your attacks. The gate will shut behind you, so you can’t go back to get them. Anyhow, the blast point is just a little down the corridor. Inside you will find three Potions, two Food, and a bunch of Gold. Pretty good haul.
#2) The other secret room can be reached by either of the right side paths. Eventually you will come to a room with many Red Barrels spaced apart. A bunch of baddies will appear in this room, and it will try to trap you in with them. The goal here is to leave at least one barrel standing when the dust settles. Use that barrel on the right side wall to uncover a secret room with three Potions and a bunch of Gold.
Thanks
