Annoying Achievements Guide

Overview

A few hints on the more annoying achievements.

Arms Race

100k points in weapon picker is super easy so long as you go for weapons with really high ammo counts and grab bonuses to refresh your clip. This works even if your clip has run out already, so don’t discard a good empty weapon if you can reach an appropriate bonus. Thus some of the worst weapons become some of the best. A blowtorch can easily carry you through to 100k points. The mean minigun is also very respectable in this mode.

Booom

Booom requires getting 75k points in Nukefism. This is the most arbitrary and random of the survival modes, and there’s not too much to be done about that in and of itself.

You can exploit the co-op mode in order to get the achievement easier, if you’ve got a controller plugged in. Join with player two and either learn to guide two troopers at once with keybord and analog stick or use keyboard emulation (joy2key etc) to control both troopers with the controller.

Coordinating two troopers isn’t easy per se, at least for most people, but having them in different places to grab items takes a lot of the pain out of the stupid randomness of nukefism.

Or, you know, you could play with a friend/co-worker/hobo you met at the train station.

Mr. Survivor

Get a half million points in survival mode. There are already some very good guides out there for survivor mode, so I’ll just cover the major points. Perks that help you get and keep bonuses running are the most useful in this remake, NOT the perks that make your weapon better. Long distance runner, my favorite weapon, fast shot, and reflex boosted are also useful. As for good weapons, the gauss, plasma, and even ion shotguns are all acceptable. The ion minigun is kind of interesting as well if you use a speed clicker with the impatient reloader perk. Since you’re going for score, don’t neglect the double points bonus!

Perky

The hardest part of perky is that you’re required to beat the highscore in Gembine to get the last perk. That’s the game you play by typing “gembine” in the credits screen. Gembine is a very straightforward game. You combine like gems to get higher value gems and have to avoid running out of space. Not much to say about the game itself, but one hint I can give is that you can play it with the mouse. This makes the game much easier because if you click, hold, and drag, you can preview what a move will do to the board before committing to it.

Smart Pack Rat

Collect 50 blowtorches. This achievement is lame, of course. If you want to grind it, you’ve probably already figured out that “Weapon Picker” is the best mode to hunt for blowtorches in. One thing you can do to zoom the screen out more is to use a second trooper with a controller set to move the trooper constantly up and to the right. Kind of like “Thomas was alone” if it were a stupid and terrible game. Restart after about ten seconds if a blowtorch hasn’t spawned yet, and die to ‘save’ every time you actually grab a blowtorch. Have fun!
