Overview
Welcome to a Role Playing Game [RPG] GUIDE for Dummies developed for AVEYOND: Gates of Night. I am the Dummy-in-Chief, sometimes known as DerEider, and have derived this Guide from the excellent AVEYOND Walkthrough for Lord of Twilight by Clair Joly. I find Gates of Night {GoN} to be a quite enjoyable game and have played it, and the other Orbs of Magic games, several times trying to improve my performance at increasing difficulty levels. However, even after multiple run-throughs, after an absence playing other games, when I came back I found myself wondering “Where am I supposed to go next?”, or “What Monsters are in this forest?”, or “How can I complete this quest?”. So I started to put together a memory aid of sorts. After completing my personal Guide, I thought it might be useful for other Gamers as well. So … After adding some RPG tips, here is presented a smoothed out rendition for my fellow Steamers.
OVERVIEW
Aveyond: Gates of Night {GoN} is a very enjoyable Role Playing Game from Amaranthia.com. It is Number 2 in a series of 4 Orbs of Magic games. The first game, also released on Steam, is named Aveyond: Lord of Twilight. Since I wrote this guide, the final two games also have been released on Steam.
This Guide is intended to provide the Gamer some general RPG, and particularly Aveyond Orbs of Magic, gaming tips plus a general where-to-go, what-to-expect description City-by-City for Gates of Night without revealing the detailed answers to the various mysteries and puzzles the Heroine’s [Mel’s] Party will encounter.
I put this Guide together as a memory aid of sorts. After completing the Guide for personal use, I thought it might be useful for other Gamers as well. So … After adding some RPG tips, this is published as a smoothed out rendition for my fellow Steamers. Experienced RPGers may want to skip the section on RPG tips, though I certainly would appreciate any comments and suggestions from RPGers.
Any Comments with questions, requests, corrections, suggestions, etc., are welcome. I will check on them and make appropriate revisions as feasible to the best of my abilities.
Save-game START
The Gamer plays the Protagonist, Mel ( a “street urchin” and professional Thief of some renown }, as she tries her best to survive frightening threats posed by an evil Vampire Mage and his minions. This Vampire Lord plans to turn off all light in the overworld so vampires may take over the world and enslave all humans; and for some unfathomable reason he needs Mel to accomplish this. Mel is assisted in her quest to save herself { and coincidentally, the world } by an assortment of up to 6 NPCs.
AVEYOND: Gates of Night {GoN} is the second chapter of four in the “Orbs of Magic” series. If the Main Quest in Chapter One, Lord of Twilight {LoT}, was completed and saved into this chapter, the Gamer will have the option of opening Gates of Night with an Advanced Start by Loading Save1 located in the Save Library, OR starting a fresh New Game from scratch.
Using the Save1 imported from LoT will give the Heroine’s Party a head-start in Battler Profile strengths, available Weapons and Equipment, as well as Inventory Mel accumulated in the first chapter.
Starting a New Game from scratch will enable the Gamer [and Mel] to face and overcome a greater challenge beginning from a clean slate. Mel’s Party will have to retrace all the LoT adventures and build up their Levels, Equipment and Supplies. If Gamer has not played Lord of Twilight, this would be mandatory, and a good idea to gain that experience.
After completing GoN’s Main Quest, you will be given the opportunity to save the game so you can continue Mel’s journey into the next AVEYOND chapter, The Lost Orb [TLO], where she finished in GoN. You may want to consider ensuring completion of all of Mel’s Journal Quests before completing the Main Quest. This will give Mel and her Party a carry-forward of their maximum potential strengths, equipment and inventory for the start of the more challenging The Lost Orb.
RPGer’s QUICK TIPS
The RPG Hero/Heroine sometimes will be accompanied by a number of other characters with various capabilities in a group that I will call a Party. An important Gamer task is the selection of the Party Members’ {PM} skills that will be most useful for the next stage of the Quest.
Save the game often as you progress. You may use different slots for each combination of Party Members. I generally Save by overwriting a previous save after there is one save for each combination of PMs. If I am running multiple attempts, I always save a given run-through to the same slot to minimize confusing myself {it’s SOO easy}. It is especially important to save when the Party is entering a new area or approaching a dangerous battle.
- If the result of an action does not suit you [e.g., the Hero just died], the action may be redone by going back to the Save just before that action, loading it and doing the action over or going somewhere else.
- The Hero/Heroine should talk to everybody, enter every building, read every sign and interact with every object encountered.
- Scan search thoroughly ! Look for the icon indicating an Object of Interest.
- These might trigger new Quests, or give information to solve others, and may provide useful Items, such as equipment or supplies.
- Check the Log or Journal often to help keeping focus on what to do next and spotting any new Quest that may have sneaked in unnoticed.
- Although you occasionally may encounter “unbeatable” Enemy/Monsters at some point in the game, normally they can be avoided.
- HOWEVER, do not avoid Monsters all the time.
- DO avoid Battle IF the Party Members [Party or PM] are weak or have run out of food/potions.
- If a Monster kills the Hero/Heroine, go back and load the most recent save.
- Then have the Party go somewhere else and come back to that big, bad Monster later, after the Party has gained strength, supplies and maybe special abilities.
- Defeating Enemy/Monsters is the Party’s main source of Experience and Loot.
- After the Party has restocked and strengthened, experience will be gained from new battles.
- The Party will grow stronger over the course of the game through defeating those Monsters.
- Dead Monsters also are a great source of Gold and Booty items, so do not forget to loot their bodies.
- Sometimes, if you are having difficulty progressing, you can go back to an earlier area in which the Party had success and repeat that success to help build the Party’s experience and loot.
- This will depend upon the game’s restocking/respawning an area after it has been cleared and left behind.
- Some games do not respawn the Monsters.
- After each battle, it’s a good idea to check on the condition/status of the PM’s and restore their Health and/or Mana (magic power) points if needed.
- Usually, this is done by consuming Food or Potions, or by sleeping in an owned or rented Bed.
- Upon arriving in a new city, the Party should browse through all the Shops to see what new Weapons, Equipment, Food, Potions or other Items are available.
- After buying or finding improved Weapons and Equipment, don’t forget to equip the Party Members with the best.
- Always upgrade the PM’s gear to the best available if affordable.
- If it is NOT affordable, the Party’s next goal should be to acquire the needed funds. I.E., go forth and beat up on some more Monsters !!
- Then come back and buy that better Equipment.
- If new Members might be added to the Party, it may help to keep a full set of used Armor and selection of caste-off Weapon types to equip a new PM.
- This would be cheaper than selling at Discount and then rebuying at List!
- Of course, if the Party is desperate for Gold, extra Equipment is a good potential resource.
- If there are PM Burden weight limits, that may restrict this tactic.
- To get more Gold, unneeded Equipment and Items may be sold at a Shop.
- However, consider the potential of adding New PMs before unloading that old Equipment.
- Also, Merchants usually pay only a fraction of List Price for Items. So, if you may need an Item later, such as Food or Potions, it may not be a good idea to sell that item.
- Before leaving a city to explore new areas, ensure the Party has a good supply of restorative items and is equipped for the expected threat.
- During a Battle, the Party usually can eat to restore Health and Mana, revive a Party Member, or use a potion or magic Scroll.
- However, usually PM’s are not permitted to change Weapons or Equipment while engaged in Battle. So, before initiating a Battle {or entering an area in which the Party might be ambushed without notice}, equip the PM’s with the best Weapons and Armor appropriate for the expected Monsters.
- Pay attention to special Items, such as Rings and Amulets, that may provide protection against certain threats or give the PM’s special powers.
Aveyond Gamer TIPS: ORBS of MAGIC
“AVEYOND – Orbs of Magic” Games
- Mel’s Party should thoroughly explore the World of Aveyond.
- Wander off the beaten, straight-and-narrow path.
- Check all those remote rooms, platforms, caves, nooks and crannies.
- Sweep an area with the Cursor, which will display Mel’s Hand or Spyglass when it is over an object of potential interest.
- I.E., Mel can open it, pick it up or read it.
- Always do so by clicking while the Hand or Spyglass is shown.
- The Party will move to the object and interact therewith.
- While exploring, Mel will find the typical AVEYOND Wood Chests and Bags of Gold
(henceforth referred to as Chests and Bags). Mel should investigate all. - Mel will find an occasional Locked Chest in this game; usually a blue or red chest.
These cannot be opened until Mel finds a Treasure Key or Lock-pick.
You should make note of the chests’ locations as Mel proceeds so you may easily come back to them after she finds that Treasure Key or pick. - Mel also will find a few piles of dirt. She needs a Shovel to dig these up.
Make note of their locations as well and return to dig after Mel finds that Shovel. - There are some Locked Chests and Dirt piles that are found during LoT that Mel cannot examine until she has acquired the Key and Shovel in GoN.
- There may be Quests from Mel’s Journal that you won’t be able to complete in one game,
but will be done only in the following chapter. - Mel’s Party Members [PM] may include up to 7 characters, but no more than 4 may be designated as Battlers.
- Mel always must be a Battler {while included in the Party}.
- Only the Battlers combat the Monsters.
- Frequently, Stella makes a excellent “Fourth” since she can Protect, Heal, Cure and Revive fellow Party Members during a Battle. Also, she can Sleep or Silence enemies.
- One PM must be designated Leader. The Leader need not be Mel nor a Battler.
The Leader will be the Character seen moving about the world of Aveyond. - If a new Weapon has a greater Damage rating, it normally should be equipped immediately.
However, do not get rid of the old weapon right away. It can be a good idea to keep one of each Weapon a with special Enhancement or Enchantment on hand – even with a lesser Damage rating – so the PM may switch if that Enchantment would be advantageous versus the next likely Monsters. - PMs may use a variety of Weapons and they specialize in different types of Weapons.
- Mel equips only Daggers. There will be several different Daggers available during GoN. Pay attention to Mel’s Skills! Her Trip Skill is especially effective versus powerful enemies.
- Edward uses Swords, but may equip only a Longsword or Excalibur. Take heed of his Dad’s advice concerning Gems.
- Galahad equips a wide variety of Swords, but NOT Excalibur. Normally Galahad is a heavier hitter than Edward. But Edward can enhance Excalibur.
- Te’ijal specializes in Bows. Better bows sometimes may be found in Chests, so check them out! However, often Te’ijal’s best weapon is either her Drain or her Paralyze skill, depending upon the Monster being faced and her HP level.
- The Orc, Ulf, may equip Clubs or Axes. So … If you find one before Ulf joins the Party,
don’t get rid of it! - The Mages equip only Staves. Stella uses ONLY “White” Staves while Lydia may use “Black” Staves.
- Some Staves will enhance different types of Lydia’s Magic Spells {e.g., Water or Fire}. So it may help to match her Staff with the Spells she plans to use.
- When shopping, take the opportunity to acquire new Amulets for Mel’s Party.
- The Party needs at least 4 of each Amulet type for protection against various Monster Hazards.
- Amulets are equipped in place of Boots, so Physical protection is reduced when they are donned.
- Mel may not need to buy 4 of each since some Amulets may be found while exploring.
I usually build up to 5 or more to minimize Equipment swapping. - Amulets may avert several Hazards including: Poison, Curse, Sleepiness, Stone, Berserk, etc.
- There are Potions and Eggs that may cure illness brought on by Monster Hazards. Also,
Stella can learn Skills to cure these ailments.
- Once all the Party’s Weapons and Armor have been upgraded, Mel should build up her Inventory of consumable items; i.e., Food, Potions, Spell Scrolls, Dr. Moo’s Eggs, etc.
It’s a matter of how much Gold Mel has accumulated.- There is a 99 maximum count limit per item, but NO weight limit.
- Cassia Leaf; keep a good stock of these!! They bring a PM back from Death!
- Food/Potion items providing very large Health/Mana boosts [e.g., Pumpkin Pies, Peaches, Venison, Elixir, etc.] are especially critical for use during prolonged Battles with powerful Monsters and Vampire Mages.
- Only one Item may be used per PM per Battle turn, so the bigger the Health Point {HP} or Mana Point {MP} pop the better!
- When Mel is “flush”, check out the Dress Shops with Lydia in the Party. You know a Girl HAS to have a decent selection of pretty Dresses!
- ALL Mel’s Party Members will gain Experience Points {XP} from defeating monsters, not only the Battlers …
- EXCEPT any PM that is “dead” at the battle conclusion gets no XP.
- SO … if a PM dies during Battle, Revive that PM with a Cassia Leaf or Stella’s Revive spell BEFORE the battle concludes, if feasible.
- A dead PM may be revived between battles but will NOT gain the lost XP.
Orbs BATTLE Tips
- During Battles, in addition to selecting the best Weapons and Armor before the Battle, be sure to pay attention to the PMs’ Skills.
- Particularly, Mel’s Trip Skill can prove crucial in overcoming powerful Monsters. Her Dagger is relatively weak, but while a Monster is “tripped”, it cannot attack PMs and the more powerful PM Battlers can pummel or cast Spells upon the hapless beast.
- Similarly Stella, who has a weak Weapon attack, can use her Silence Spell to stop Monsters that can cast Spells or her Sleep Spell for spell or non-spell Monsters.
- Also Stella can cure, heal, revive injured PMs or protect them with either her Spells or certain Items such as Food, Eggs, or potions.
- Stella adds a new “White” Spell each time she Levels Up. Similarly Lydia may add a new “Dark” Spell when she levels. Note what Spells have been added to their Skill Books before any Battle.
- Te’ijal’s Drain skill potentially can wipe out a Monster. If Drain is successful, it will take a Monster’s Health in an amount equal to Te’ijal’s reduction in Health balance. If her Health is at 100%, she can take NO Health.
- If Te’ijal’s Health is high, it might be better to use her Paralyze skill. Similar to the tripped state, a “paralyzed” monster cannot attack or cast spells.
- When Lydia is a Battler, she can access her selection of “Dark” Spells. Unlike Stella’s White Spells, Lydia can inflict harmful damage on Monsters.
- While initially Lydia has a small selection of spells, by equipping one of several Spell Books in place of a Shield, she can learn a new spell from that Book each time she Levels Up. Equip that Book!!
- When her Spell Book has been completed, Lydia throws it away. Be sure to equip the next Spell Book.
- Do not let Lydia Level Up without a Spell Book equipped!!
- To the extent feasible in Battle, match the individual PMs’ Weapon or Skill capabilities against known weaknesses of the Monsters the Party is facing.
- This is simple if Mel knows her PMs can readily defeat the enemies.
- But if it’s apparent that it will take 2 or more Battle Turns, the party should concentrate and coordinate their attacks so they at least can eliminate one Monster each turn; preferably the most dangerous opponent.
- If one {or more} PM has sustained heavy Health Point {HP} losses, It must be decided which Battler should use its turn to restore those HP losses.
- If Stella is a Battler, she is the logical choice to restore a PM’s HP with her White Spells.
- If the Battlers do not include Stella, one of the “attack” Battlers must sacrifice its attack and rather feed the appropriate Food or Potion to the injured {or even “dead”} PM. Normally a weaker PM like Mel or Lydia might make sense.
- Some Monsters are impervious to physical damage. In that event, one of the heavy hitters without an alternate Skill {e.g., Galahad} might be used for restoration duties.
CITY Activities
- Locate the city’s Magic Mirror Express (MME) and activate it by flipping the switch down. The MME will allow Mel to teleport her Party directly, for a price, from one city to another by walking through a Mirror.
- First Mel must activate the MME herself at each destination before she can transport there later. That means Mel’s Party must walk there first.
- Locate the Intelligence Agency and complete special Training {Solve a Puzzle}.
- Browse through all the Shops to see what’s available in that city.
- Talk to all the Citizens Mel can find. Any one might be able to provide Mel a valuable hint or clue to help with a Quest.
- See whether there is a Gift that Edward either can keep or give as a present to one of the Girls. The Attraction of the Gift recipient is increased {or decreased} by 1. Check the PM Profiles.
- Try to enter all buildings and talk to any Citizens. Read Bookcases and Newspapers, open Chests, pick up Bags, warm Mel’s hands at Fireplaces, etc.
- After completing a significant Quest, Mel should revisit the city and talk to the Citizens again. Some may change their reponses because of that Quest.
- Some Citizens may give Mel a Side Quest. While these are “optional”, each may contribute toward the Party’s experience, wealth or reputation.
- Mel will find Mailboxes in front of some houses showing the owner’s name. Mel should read {Spyglass} them if she is looking for a particular character, perhaps to deliver some Wine, for example.
- Mel should observe {Spyglass} every Bookcase she finds. The book titles are hilarious and she will gather important clues for obtaining a special weapon in the AVEYOND’s Gates of Night game. There may be something other than books.
- Locate the Statue of the Goddess and make a donation of 10 Gold to increase Mel’s Luck in the game. Mel’s Luck = Party’s Luck !
- The more Luck the Party has, the greater their chance of dodging each enemy attack in Battle.
- Luck also will increase the amount of Loot Mel gets from Chests, Bags and vanquished Monsters. So, Luck is an excellent long-term investment.
- Mel also has the option to steal from the statue’s Donation Box. That will decrease Mel’s Luck in the game.
- Once she has made a donation or stolen from the Box, Mel can no longer interact with it. So, choose wisely.
- Want to make the game a bit more difficult ?? Steal !!
- Away from Thais, the Party must stay at an Inn to restore their Health and Mana.
- If the nightly Inn fee is very high, it may be more cost effective to use Food items or Spells to restore full PM Health & Mana. But using the Inn is easier.
- Sleeping does NOT cure Ailments, such as Cursed, Poisoned, etc.
- Left uncured, Ailments may continue to reduce PM health, defense or agility. So use appropriate Potions or Spells to cure these.
- The larger the Party, the better it gets!!
- Be sure to look in the Manor Mirrors and check out Lydia’s Dresses.
To TELEPORT … or NOT To Teleport
- Teleporting or warping is an excellent way to speed up the process of movement between Quest objectives.
- Teleporting enables the Party to avoid dangerous Monsters between Cities.
- However, teleporting comes with a sacrifice in Party XP and Loot.
- My preference is to take every opportunity to take on the monsters and gain the maximum possible Loot and Experience [XP], unless the Party is weak.
- In fact, normally I comb the entire Forest, Cave, Desert or Mountain between Cities to be sure ALL monsters have been cleared out!
- At high game Difficulty, GoN respawns most Monsters after the Party leaves an area. So, the next trip the Party will have fresh Monster opportunities.
- At easy Difficulty, GoN does not reseed all Monsters. Still some {Wolf packs in Brightwood Forest for example} are restored for potential battle.
- More Gold always is needed for better Equipment or more Supplies.
- Also, more XP is always a benefit. The PMs’ Experience Levels are especially critical during the epic end-of-game climactic Battle!
Dr. MOO’s EGGS
- If Mel uses an unusual new Egg for its special effects on Monsters before taking it to Dr. Moo, she will lose the opportunity to hatch a special Pet.
Mel can talk to Dr. Moo to get the instructions for the Hatching Machine. If approved, an Egg will hatch a very special new Pet Creature from which Mel will be able to periodically {roughly every 15 minutes or so} gather some powerful Eggs from her Pets:
- Bomber Bird; Surprise, a big bomb Egg! Useful for clearing blocked Doors.
- Spider; Egg gives enemy party some nasty poison. Good vs. Frogs & Toads.
- Easter Bunny; Egg bestows random, unpredictable benefits [or NOT] upon Mel’s Party.
Can be helpful, but sometimes may harm {e.g., Curse} the PM’s. - Ice Bird; Egg gives Blizzard Freeze damage to the enemy party.
- Fire Bird; Egg gives Fire Storm damage to the enemy party.
- Golden Goose; We all know what the Golden Goose does {500 Gold @}.
- Raicho Egg; Ugly-Brown? Found near Naylith Summit —> Hatches a Raven at Moo’s Farm.
- Fairy Toad; Egg Enchants the enemy party. Acquired near end of GoN. May not be hatched during GoN if Mel advances rapidly to the Climactic Showdown. So … Slow down a little.
- The Hatchery is fairly close to Chateau Lenore, so it would be convenient to combine any trip to either one with a trip to the other. The Chateau also has a Dock for Mel’s Ship but no MME.
- Mel needs to revisit the Hatchery frequently to hatch newly found unusual Eggs and to gather freshly laid Pet Eggs. She also has to visit the Chateau to collect her delivery Fees and check for new deliveries.
- If Party Health is down, I will take advantage of a Hatchery visit to walk over to Thais for a free Sleep-over at Mel’s “Digs”. Collect Wolf Haunches on the way forth & back.
- Mel can buy special Eggs only here. They can enable Mel’s Party to do some unusual things:
- Teleport {Warp} directly to the Hatchery from anywhere except the Underworld or during a Battle. Be sure Mel always has at least One {1} Red Warp Egg in her Inventory at all times!!
- Escape from a Battle going horribly wrong before the Monsters kill everybody; Monsters disappear and Mel’s Party continues from that spot. However, the Looting and Experience [XP] opportunities are lost.
- When in a cave/dungeon, warp directly to the cave Entrance. Mel may want to avoid a serious threat or simply take a quick shortcut to the exit.
- Remove certain Spell effects from a PM; e.g., Sleep or Silence.
GOODIE CAVES
- One Cave contains hundreds of thousands of Gold coins, another has the best Weapons, a third has the best Armor for Mel’s Party Members, a fourth has Spell Books for each of the Mages, and in the fifth Cave you’ll be able to increase the Levels of Mel’s entire Party (up to 99).
- I want to stress for less experienced players that using Items from Goodie Caves provides Spoilers that are not really part of the early game.
- They are like “built-in cheats”. Early in the game, they make the PM’s very “OP”.
- Many Gamers consider that these spoil the gaming experience and never look for them. The challenge of the game disappears when the Goodie Cave goodies are used.
- By playing through all Four of the Orbs of Magic games, eventually each of the best Armor, Weapons, and Spells {but NOT free Gold and Levels} are revealed and become available to the Party at an appropriate time.
- A Gamer may get credit for the Goodie Cave Achievements on Steam by simply entering each Cave but not opening any of the Chests. This will avoid Over-Powering the PM’s and will maintain the original game experience.
- Opening a Chest in a Goodie Cave automatically will put its contents in the Party’s Inventory. However, you may choose not to use it in order to preserve the “Gaming Experience”.
- You may be able to sell Equipment at a Shop; haven’t tried that.
Cities of Aveyond: CONCEPT – Approach
Monsters are named that may be encountered in the environs surrounding each City. The monsters do not come into the cities. The Experience Points and potential non-Gold Loot gained by defeating the Monster types most frequently encountered is shown in square brackets [XP-Loot]. The XPs give the Gamer a rough idea of how hard it will be for the Party to take on the next group of Monsters; I.E., the bigger the XP, the tougher the Monster.
Exact Locations of treasures and clues will not be given. That would take away the point of playing the game. Mel’s Party must explore the world of Aveyond rather thoroughly to find all the Chests, Bags, etc.! Go into all the Buildings and explore everywhere in all the Forests, Deserts and Caves you can find, despite the creepy Spiders and slithery Snakes that might be in there.
THAIS – The Capital
- The Magic Mirror Express [MME] teleports the Party by walking through its mirror to Harburg, Stormbend, or Gheledon.
- Mel may rent an Apartment {2A} or Manor here as her permanent Party base.
- In LoT, Mel began training here as a Spy under Prof. Gray at the School of War and Magic [SWM]. Now Mel continues her Spy training ”in the field”. She must visit each Intelligence Agency for training in the various cities.
- Thais initially was reached in LoT during the Escape from Harburg through the Shadow Woods North and Thial Mountain Caves.
- There be monsters! Foxes [4] and Forest Guardians [5-Bread] in the Shadow Woods North, plus Dragonflies [9], Wild Chickens [6-Haunch], and the occasional cave Rat [13-Cheese] in the Thial Mountain Caves. Dangerous only in early LoT, but they are not as bad as the Vampire threat at that time.
- There are slim pickings for looting here, but it still is early in the game when Mel first gets here.
- Mel should occasionally visit Fedor of the great Vineyard at Chateau Lenore, west of Thais, to check whether there is a Wine delivery to be made. Mel will be paid for a successful delivery BUT she must go back to the Chateau to collect and see whether there might be another delivery.
- Many Quests and puzzles involve Thais including: getting a place to live, finding a Lost Dog, finding Ancient Artifacts, outing a traitorous Spy in the Castle, reporting a spectacular News story, checking rumors of a sleeping Ice Princess, finding Red Rock Pass, investigating a Comet falling near an Ancient Ruins, etc.
HARBURG – Darkthrop Central
- There is a Magic Mirror Express [MME] connecting only to Thais.
- There is World access at a Dock through the Shadow Woods South.
- There be Monsters!! Tough Blue Trolls [44] and even worse Red Trolls [62] roam Shadow Woods South. They give up some good Gold though. Gear up Mel’s Party for a pounding!
- Several Quests and puzzles involve Harburg including: initial theft of the Orb of Darkness, helping an Old Man survive, finding a Long Lost Love, finding a family Diary in the Catacombs, escaping from Vampires to Thais, getting back into the Underworld, etc.
- Darkthrop Keep is a short walk to the northeast from the East Gate. Mel might run into powerful Vampire Thugs [5000] at the Keep. There also are evil, vicious keep Rats [13-Cheese] in the cellar Sewer and Dungeon.
- It is rumored that the Underworld might be reached through the Catacombs in the Shadow Woods South.
- There be bad, awful Monsters!! Grim Reapers [122] and undead Skeletons [80]. PMs may be Death Cursed there! Beware!
- Mel’s Party may enter the Catacombs to search for Treasures and Ralph’s family Diary, but see warnings below about the danger here and exiting to the Underworld.
- Early in the game, the Catacombs represent an extreme hazard to the life of Mel’s relatively weak Party. So … it probably is best to wait until late in LoT before doing the Diary Quest.
- In LoT, Mel may have learned that a Death Certificate [DC] is needed to enter the Underworld. Te’ijal and Galahad do not have their DCs.
- Darn … Well now you know! Where to find one?? If you run across one, you had better grab it {won’t happen until late GoN}.
- If the Party gets strong enough to handle Grim Reapers and Skeletons, they can be a great source of XP and Gold.
GHED’AHRE: Vampire Underworld
- Reached by walking through the Catacombs south of Harburg.
- It has no MME during GoN. No “Egg Warping” from the Underworld either! Better have a good Plan if you go there!
- Has some Shops with a few unusual Items; like Blood {wonder what that’s for?}, Undead Amulets, Skeleton Armor, and the latest Designer Coffins!
- Several Quests and puzzles involve Ghed’ahre including: Te’ijal’s initial Exit to Harburg, discovering the secret Password, saving a Gambler’s Soul, winning at the Cursed Slots, gambling for a Legendary Weapon, getting back into the Underworld from Aveyond, finding the vital Orb of Light and the Orb of Life, etc.
- The Party may be able to exit back to the Catacombs once the Password puzzle has been solved.
- Ghed’ahre is surrounded by the Wyrm Forests East and West. The Cliffs of Remembrance are reached through the Wyrm Forest West.
- There be Monsters!! Blue Espers [18] and Green Slimes [16] {Ewww !! It’s a Slime!!}. Tough enemies early in the game and the best source of Gold for Te’ijal at the start!
GHELEDON: Dwarven Gold
- There is a Magic Mirror Express [MME] only to Thais.
- There is World access at a Dock through the Thial Mountains South.
- Gheledon is approached first from northwest Brightwood Forest by passing through the southeast corner of the Istir Forest into Thial Mountains North.
- Mel must get special Training to enter the Gold Mine; Climbing.
- Talk to all the Dwarves. There are some Quests to be found here including: find a Lost Pickaxe, buy a Song for Edward, deliver Wine Case, etc.
- Mel’s Party must overcome a powerful, dangerous Boss Ghost during LoT; be sure Mel has a strong Party with her!!
- Find the passage to Naylith Summit and locate the Hidden Gold Mine.
- There be monsters! Thial Mountains’ Monsters can be problematic in the early LoT game whether coming to or leaving Gheledon:
- Storm Birds [13-Snap Dragon Egg] can Whirlwind attack the whole Party
- Harpies [12-Bread] can be tough for an inexperienced PM.
- In the Gold Mine there are nasty Red Mini [16-Leather Helm] and Green Mini [14-Leather Helm] Trolls.
- Btw, Storm Birds are a good source of Snapdragon Eggs and Harpies often have Bread.
Down in the Gold Mine, those “Minis” sometimes cough up Leather Armor items.
STORMBEND: Pirate Bound
- There is a Magic Mirror Express [MME] connecting to Thais, Moo Hatchery or Witchwood.
- The Port is just West of the shopping district. The Ship Merchant is there.
- Initial approach from Thais is through the infamous Red Rock Pass [RRP] and across the hazardous Sinoa Plains.
- Mel learns in LoT that a Merchants Card is needed to reach Stormbend.
- Without the Pass Card, Mel can enter RRP but not past a Keycard door.
- There be Monsters!! Sharp-dressing Rogue 2s [30-Traveling Clothes] and catty Rogue 1s [24-Steel Dagger]. Mel may pick up some Steel Daggers and Traveling Clothes from the corpses of these bandits.
- After Mel finds the Merchants Card, her Party can reach the Sinoa Plains.
- There be Monsters again – in the Plains!! Marauding venomous Serpents [40] and stomping dino Crushers [60]! Strap on your Serpent Amulets!!
- Talk to all the Citizens. There are some tasks & Quests to be found here:
- Get rid of the Pirates!! Easier said than done! This is a complicated Quest and cannot be solved until well into GoN. Check with the King for advice. Talk to all the Pirates as well. Come back later and recheck.
- Other Quests include: Flowers for Edward, Toy for the brat, Wine Case delivery, rent a Canoe, meet {or avoid?} Lydia, help the Blind Guy, etc.
- Buy a Canoe. Also, Mel MUST buy a Ship.
QUIN KINGDOM: Ice Castle
- There is no MME but the World can be reached at a Dock to the south.
- The Ice Castle initially is reached through Istir Forest which is infested with Snow Wolf [56-Haunch] packs and icy Frostlings [91],
- Mel must learn to Skate in order to cross the frozen Ponds and enter Istir Forest.
- There are several Ice Caves to explore. They are scattered around the Istir Forest edges.
- Entry to one cave is boarded up! How can Mel possibly get past that?
- There be monsters, in the caves; treacherous Ice Pixies [86] and tough Pig Men [47]. Be sure to strap on the correct Amulets.
- Several Quests are linked to Quin Kingdom including: Walk to Gheledon, wake the Ice Princess, open the locked Chests, locate the Quarter Key, rescue Stella, find the passage to Aveyond, etc.
WITCHWOOD: Curses & Spiders
- There are an MME connecting only to Stormbend and a Dock for Mel’s Ship southwest of the Mire Woods.
- Initially, Witchwood is reached from RRP or Stormbend through Sinoa Plains and Mire Woods.
- There be Monsters! Venomous Serpents [49] and stomping Crushers [60] in Sinoa Plains, plus cursing Hags [137] and thumping Frogs [38] in Mire Woods, as well as biting Spiders [25] in West Cave. Check Mel’s Amulets!!
- During LoT, the Spider Den shelters an immense Bossmonster Spidress that gives major battle to Mel’s young Party. It still has the Spiders [25] in GoN.
- Check out the two Item Shops, Statue of the Goddess, the Inn, Heptitus’ house, and the various other Witch buildings.
- There are some Quests tied to Witchwood: Fetch a Spider Nest, finish a Toy, find the Candy, candy for Edward, retrieve the Quarter Key, etc. Most occur during LoT
TAR VEDRON KINGDOM: Gateway to Mount Drake
- The MME connects only to Dragkthor, but the World can be accessed at the Dock to the northeast.
- Initially reached by Ship through the Dock at the southeast corner of the Phyree Jungle.
- Overland travel to Mount Drake and Dragkthor must pass through Phyree Jungle, Colosseum Ruins and the Mali Desert.
- There be Monsters! Huge Hippogryphs [112] and hissing Dragon Snakes [70] in the Phyree Jungle, plus roving Tigers [93] in the Mali Desert. The Party also might run into a Boss-Pirate Ghost [1000] on a desert island.
- Several Quests are associated with Tar Vedron including: Hook up a couple of Citizens & tell the Mother-in-Law, deliver Wine, buy Flowers for Edward, is there a Key here-somewhere, find a Bracelet, check out rumored Lost Treasure Cave, visit a tropical Bazaar, get that Egg.
DRAGKTHOR: Dragon Central
- There is an MME connecting only to Tar Vedron for 1000 Gold! No thanks … think I’ll walk.
- The initial approach is on foot from the Dock near Tar Vedron, thence through Phyree Jungle and the Mali Desert.
- Once in Dragkthor, to leave Mel could walk out, Egg warp to Moo Hatchery, use the MME to Tar Vedron, or use her Compass to return to her Ship.
- Surrounded by the dangerous, but highly lucrative, Mount Drake Caves.
- Mel needs Tighrope training to reach Dragkthor through the Mountains and Cave system.
- The principal Quest concern is collecting a Quarter Key.
- Other Dragthor Quests include: find a Dragon’s Scale, bring a Sapphire to a Dragon, grab a Firebird Egg, defeat a polite Boss Dragon Lord [1498].
- Now, THERE be Monsters!! These Monsters have rather high XP & Gold. There are burning Genies [86], flaming Firebirds [73] and the Dragon Lord [1498] to overcome.
- It’s a good place for Mel to come to raise funds for the next Equipment upgrade; those new Weapons and Armors are getting EXPENSIVE! Where’s the extinguisher?
[/list]
ORC KINGDOM: What are they saying?
- There is no MME. Mel cannot walk there from Thais or Gheledon.
- Access is only by Ship through a Dock to the east through the Wasted Lands swarming with nasty Stone Toads [210] and deadly Black Scorpions [136].
- In order to talk to and understand the Orc citizens, Mel first must learn the 0rc Language.
- Quest activities include: Steal the Quarter Key, buy a Bouquet and/or a Sonnet for Edward, spring Hercules out of jail, free the innocent Orc, solve a Murder Mystery, break out of Prison, sneak past the Orc Castle Guards and search the Castle.
VENWOOD KINGDOM: Where’s that Quarter Key?
- There is no MME. Access is gained only by Ship to a Dock west of Fedir Forest.
- Venwood is reached through Fedir Forest, wherebe fearsome Monsters.
- Powerful Griffins [310] and stinging Horned Bees [100] roam the woods.
Mel’s Party had better don the correct gear or be destroyed! - Numerous Quests are to be found in Venwood including: Locate the Quarter Key, rescue the lost Elf Boy from an incredible Kraken Monster, visit the Elf Queen, unlock and fix the Waterworks Tower, delve into the Waterway, in the Library check out the Book of Storm Magic, investigate the Elf King {Lionel} Statue, etc. And who lives in that Empty House anyway?
- Hmmm … Waterway! Sounds like Mel will have to learn to Swim.
- Oh no!! Even more Monsters in the Waterways – Will it never end ?? Devastating Water Imps [156], the seemingly impervious Gill Fish [242] and a huge Kraken [3105].
- Why is everyone accusing Lydia of doing evil deeds? Admittedly, she’s the kind of Mage everyone loves to hate … But? Does she have an even eviler Twin? Mel has to solve this puzzler.
FAERY REALM: Frog Kingdom ??
- There is no MME and no Dock. Mel has to walk {?} there. But HOW, where?
- There is a secret Faery Portal that must be found. Just ask around – explore.
- Faiara can be reached through the lovely Whisper Forest.
- But beware of the stealthy Blue Glitter [284] and deadly Red Glitter [367].
- They will sneak up and Glitter or Shine on the Party!
- Bring Mel’s best PM Battlers.
- A Mage might help; might need Protection.
- In the Mirror Cavern, even nastier Monsters lurk: the charming Mad Bunny [302-Cassia] and garish Purple Slime [208-Aquifolium].
- If Mel can defeat the Medusa {careful; that snake-haired Lady can entrance a PM}, Mel can collect a Magic Mushroom. Also find the Frog Crossbow for Te’ijal – it’s very powerful!
- Mel might get lost in the Cavern – Who brought the Moo Eggs?
- Talk to all the Faeries. There are a few Quests here in addition to finding the lost Quarter Key: Fetch a lost Wand, bring Faery Dust to the Queen, find a Magic Mushroom, learn about Faery Circles, find Butterfly Wings, get that big Toad Egg, etc.
NAYLITH: Hercules Unchained
Mel reached Naylith Summit during Lord of Twilight and discovered the hidden Mystery Cave with the Raven puzzle. But Mel cannot start to search for the Quarter Keys until she acquires a Ship in Gates of Night. The Ship enables Mel’s Party to travel to the exotic remote Kingdoms of Aveyond.
The catch is Naylith is not on Mel’s World Map! And it was not at Naylith Summit.
- To get to Naylith, there is the Raven Puzzle to solve. Just find the Four Quarter Keys. Simple! Mel has the Map, the Book clue, the Ship, and there’s the Birdcage?
- What is a Raicho ? Well … Mel might get an ugly brown Egg from one
- And … here’s a clue? Mel has to pass through the beautiful Rose Forest and get past insidious Blue Blossoms [698-Gem] and Red Blossoms [452-Gem] in order to finally reach Naylith.
Man ! Those are some heavy duty Flowers! - Those Blossoms are deadly, but Mel can loot some really fine Gems from them, including: Rubies, Emeralds, Pearls, Diamonds, and Sapphires. What can Those be used for?
- Several Quests may be completed here, including: Name a Star, find a Harp String, talk to Hercules {what’s HE doing here, anyway?}, pet the Cats, explore the SEER’s Cave, defeat the BossMonster GIANT [3000], find the Guardian {who?}, find the Key and enter the Sky Garden {not until a later game; maybe The Lost Orb is here?}, etc.
- There be Monsters!! In Seer’s Cave the party will meet more monsters: sporing Mushrooms [1434] and Magic Flies [450]. They are tough! And the GIANT is no joke at [4551] XP. Look for the killer Centaur Bow & a Blessed Shield.
- Mel had better bring her “A Game”!
- By now Mel will have had at least the chance to buy the best Weapons & Armor available so far. If she could not yet afford it, Mel had better sally her Party forth and harvest some more Blossoms, take the Gems for Enchanting at the Aveyond Fountain, and selling all those enhanced Gems. The Blossoms are respawned at high difficulty in GoN.
- Mel’s Party also could revisit the highly lucrative Seer’s Cave. The ‘Shrooms & Magic Flies will be there, but the Giant is not respawned.
- Going back to Faiara and the Whisper Forest also could garner lots of Gold and {with the latest Zurvan, Charmed, Tivanna, Blessed and Medusa Armors} the Party should be able to wade readily through all the Glitters. The Magic Defense on those Armors is really amped!
- The Party also could make decent money in the Mount Drake Caves & Fedir Forest.
- Now here are my Penny-Pincher’s tips: Do NOT rush to the nearest Shop to sell all those Gems Mel just gathered. Instead, follow the steps below:
- The first thing Mel should do is take that Sack of Gems directly to Aveyond’s enchanting Fountain of Destiny.
- Enter Mel’s Inventory and select each Gem 1-at-a-time. Each will be equipped to Edward’s Excalibur.
- Then have Edward dip Exalibur into the Enchanting Fountain 1-at-a-time.
- Nothing will happen for most Gems. But Dipping certain Gems will result in a miraculous transformation that will enhance Excalibur’s Damage rating.
- Note that rating for each Gem by entering the Equip Menu for Edward’s Sword. The top rated will be a “Sun Diamond” followed by “Flame Diamond” and “Ice Diamond”.
- Be sure Edward equips Excalibur with a Sun Diamond before leaving!
- Now Mel will know which Gems can be Enchanted. Enchant ALL of those Gem types. This will increase the Gold Value of each Gem by up to 500 Gold @.
- Keep 1 of each of the best Enhanced Gems and NOW rush to a Shop sell the rest.
- Finish up all Mel’s “easy” Quests.
- Be sure all the PMs have their best Weapons, Armor and Spells equipped,
- Has Lydia learned ALL the Magic Spell Books? {Weather, Dragon, Fairy, Ancient}
- Are all the PMs above level 50? Why not? GoN is game 2 of 4 —> Half-way through the OoM series, and max Level = 99. The evil Vampire Mage in the final showdown will have lots of
XP and HP to overcome! - Stock up on all those consumables; especially for Health & Mana. Should have plenty of Potions, Spell Scrolls and Eggs as well. 99 is not too many.
- We are nearing the end, Folks! Reef the sails and batten the hatches, there’s a heavy blow coming! Etc., etc., etc.
[/olist]
MEMORY CAVE: Where the Lost is Found !!
- There is neither MME nor Port nor Egg warping.
- Again … HOW can Mel’s Party get in there? A Death Certificate is needed!
- Once they are in, can the Party get OUT? Before entering Memory Cave, the Party can walk back to the “Overworld”.
- Once in Memory Cave, they can exit to Ghed’ahre before taking Mel back to join Stella at the Orb and confronting Gyendal.
- When Mel has rejoined the Party, they will be constrained from entering Shops or exiting Ghed’ahre toward the East. At that point, it is a one-way trip to join Stella.
- We’re talking for-real, serious Monsters in here. They’ve got those cutesy blonde Darklings [1000] running all over! And then there are those ominous black Ghosts [810] around every corner!
- There are Locked Chests in Memory Cave. But now they’re Red – and the old key doesn’t work??
- Now what? Darklings are guarding the Chests. Where’s that Red Key?
- What to do now? Avoid these nasty varmints?
- Most can be bypassed.
- Preserve Mel’s Health & Mana restorative supplies for the “Showdown”? Or …
- Waste ’em all for their huge XP and Gold Loot?
- Does the Party have enough supplies?
- Are the Mages powerful enough?
- Do the PMs have high enough Experience Level {can build up to 99}?
- Well … If Stella is in already, It looks like it’s too late now! We have to rejoin her!
- What‘s an Orb of Life? WHERE‘s the Orb of Life?
