Overview
Tired of seeing too many polygons in a single face? Are Sam’s hyper-detailed facial movements making you experience uncanny valley? Think generic balaclavas are cool? This guide has got you covered! Although if you want that sleek, low-poly balaclava for yourself, you’re gonna have to work for it.
Disclaimer
*NOTE: Requires replacing game files. Will probably not work on some story maps, but seems to have no trouble with 4E mission maps as well as co-op.
Credits where it’s due: While we made the following file via editing, KenTWOu is entirely responsible for the source file, which features a number of gameplay changes from this thread here: [link].
All credit goes to him, and because of this you should feel free to NOT give my guide a thumbs up, as this is merely for your own convenience, as well as mine, and not a crappy attempt to get a higher rep in the Steam community. The purpose of this remake is to retain the balaclava for in-game while keeping the original gameplay of Blacklist intact and untouched.
AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, BACK UP YOUR Blacklist.umd FILE, FOR GOD’S SAKE! DO IT FOR THE CHILDREN!
Additionally, for the safety of your Uplay account, avoid playing SvM matches while running modded files. we can’t guarantee that you will or will not be banned for using a conflicting Blacklist.umd file, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Introduction
Tired of seeing too many polygons in a single face? Are Sam’s hyper-detailed facial movements making you experience uncanny valley? Think generic balaclavas are cool? Ubisoft’s got you covered, although if you want that sleek, low-poly balaclava for yourself, you’re gonna have to work for it.
Instructions
Steam Users:
Dr. Gervasius’s Manual Search Method:
Once the file is somewhere on your computer, open the Steam “common” game folder. It’s typically located at:
“C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon” (no quotes)
Then, open:
“Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell BlacklistsrcSYSTEMUMDs”
The whole file is typically:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTom Clancy’s Splinter Cell BlacklistsrcSYSTEMUMDs
The file you’ll be looking to backup is called “Blacklist.umd”.
alternatively…
Realzameer’s Steam Library Method:
1. Right-click the game in your Steam Library
2. Click on Properties
3. Click on the Local Files tab
4. Click Browse Local Files, and you already at the SteamsteamappscommonTom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist part above!
5. Go to the “src” folder, then go into “SYSTEM”, then into “UMDs”
6. Backup your “Blacklist.umd” file, I personally created a new folder called “Backup”, and put the file in there.
Uplay Users:
If you’re using Uplay without Steam, simply go to the game’s directory, open src, SYSTEM, then UMDs. Look for a file called “Blacklist.umd”.
BACK IT UP!
You should be able to recover it by reinstalling the game, though that’s a huge waste of time if you ever want this mod to be disabled. Instead of backing it up, you may also consider renaming the file to “Blacklist.umd2”, or adding another character to render the game file null, while still stored as a backup.

This version now works for Sam and Briggs, BOTH players will need the same Blacklist.umd file otherwise this will not work. Further below in the guide is a section regarding missions where the balaclava will not work at all.
Older Version: This version will have a balaclava on Sam Fisher only, NOT ON BRIGGS.[drive.google.com]

Balaclava version.[dl.dropboxusercontent.com]
Non-balaclava version.[dl.dropboxusercontent.com] When replacing your Blacklist.umd, make sure you rename this file to Blacklist.umd.
Included are the changes below:
- Active sprint was disabled;
- Sonar impulses are enabled on Perfectionist difficulty;
- H2H denials was tweaked, Realistic/Perfectionist has almost the same settings as Normal difficulty;
- Stun gun (tazer) has 18 shots instead of 9;
- Holding D-Pad Up on gamepad changes vision mode from NVG to Sonar Goggles;
- One bullet/bolt to shoot helmets off in manual mode;
- Only three types of enemies have helmets: Heavy, Shielded Heavy, Technician.
Splinter Cell Blacklist Balaclava[drive.google.com]
Courtesy of Thylacinex, this mod enables Sam’s Balaclava in virtually any map (including Briggs in the co-op maps) except for the Airstrip single player mission. In fact, the Airstrip mission makes Sam completely invisible to the player, turning Sam into a floating weapon, which is good for a few laughs. This file isn’t replacing any other game files (unlike the Blacklist.umd), so no backup can be made for this part. Both players will need this file to connect to each other.
Example:
————————————————————————————————————————–
Simply drag and drop the new Blacklist.umd file into the UMD (C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTom Clancy’s Splinter Cell BlacklistsrcSYSTEMUMDs) folder. When you launch the game, you will now have a balaclava covering Sam’s face in missions (not aboard the paladin). If you go in a co-op mission, Sam and Briggs will both be ready for action!
If Problems Occur
As with any file modification, if any problems occur, you’ll need to revert back to when the program was working again through a backup. Luckily, through the multiple warnings in this guide, you probably made one! If you didn’t, we have you covered!
If for some reason, your backup is having a problem or that you had just forgot to make one, here is a backup file as well. {LINK REMOVED} Backup here!
MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE (BACKUP) PART SO IT OVERWRITES/WORKS PROPERLY!
As a Steam user (sorry Uplay owners!):
1. Delete/move your Blacklist.umd file out of your Blacklist folder somewhere else for this option to work properly.
2. Right-click the game name in your Steam Library, click on Properties, go to the Local Files tab.
3. Click Verify Integrity of Game Cache (it will take some time to verify), and that should try and redownload the original Blacklist.umd file. This is an easier way to reobtain cruical game files without reinstalling the entire game.
Again, a backup created is provided above in this section via a Mediafire download link.
Missions Without Balaclavas
Here’s a list of missions that the balaclava will not work at all on, it’s something we can’t change so this will just be a heads up if you think it may not be working. This cannot be fixed, we’ll upload a file if there is some work-around, but currently this cannot be fixed at all.
The blacked out sections are parts that could be considered as a spoiler. Roll your mouse over the blacked out area to reveal the text. If you don’t want a section of the game possibly spoiled, make sure you do not roll your mouse over it.
Campaign Missions:
Insurgent Stronghold
Abandoned Mill (Appears ~75% through the mission while in a cutscene after Sam is caught due to the nerve gas.)
Transit Yards (Doesn’t work on Briggs at all, works on Sam perfectly.)
Dentention Facility (Will appear when you get your gear, so 25%-50% through.)
Airstrip
American Fuel (Non-replayable anyway.)
LNG Terminal
That’s all for the missions it will not work on! If there are any mistakes, please let us know!
Closing
If there are any problems, feel free to post a comment here and let us know. Enjoy!
