Best Freeware Sceneries for X-Plane 11

Overview

X-Plane 11 got an awesome modding community that releases a lot of top-notch content for free. This guide will list some of the best sceneries/airports without any specific order.

GA Airports/Airfields

A list with some of the best freeware General Aviation airports ever developed for X-Plane 11.

ENHA – Hamar Stafsberg, Norway

Pictures can hardly do justice to this fantastic GA airfield located in Hamar, a small town in Norway with around 27,593 inhabitants as of 2006. Every single building there was custom made by antwob, the scenery author. The detail level is quite impressive for a freeware, given that it took over a thousand hours to be made and the ground textures were hand-painted with an incredible resolution of 5cm/pixel. That also makes it quite demanding hardware-wise, so, you need at least 2 GBs of VRAM to run it decently.
It is hands down one of the best freeware addons I have ever seen in around 6 years of flight simulation experience. It’s that good!

ENOV – Ørsta-Volda Airport, Norway

Antwob never stops surprising us with his high-quality – and freeware – content. ENOV is definitely one of a kind when it comes to detail and overall quality. If you show this scenery to any unaware flight simmer, he will probably think that it’s a $25+ payware. That’s how good it is. Lots of custom-made buildings, hand-made ground textures and breath-taking details.
It also requires at least 2 GBs of VRAM to run smoothly.

L52 – Oceano County Airport, United States

Oceano is a popular GA airport in SoCal, with only one runway and no control tower whatsoever. It counts with hand-painted textures like ENOV and ENHA, with 1.2m/px ortophotos for the surrounding area and custom vegetation. If you are into GA flying and/or PilotEdge subscriber, this one is a must-download (it’s under PEs coverage area).

Airports

A list with some of the best freeware airports ever made for X-Plane 11

EGGP – Liverpool John Lennon Airport, England

Imagine there’s no payware content, no money to be spent. Wonder no more, John Lennon! antwob made an awesome rendition of EGGP, one of the most beautiful airports in England. With the same level of detail of ENOV and ENHA, it’s a jaw-dropping piece of art. It’s a notch above of UK2000s level (payware). That’s how good it is.

PAJN – Juneau International, Alaska

PAJN is definitely one of the most beautiful airports in the whole world. From the unique vegetation to the geography, it is simply gorgeous. MisterX6’s rendition does justice, of course. With custom orthophotos and hand-made buildings, this one easily beats ORBX’s version for FSX and P3D, which is not freeware. This one is a must-download for the ultimate alaskan experience.

KCUB – Jim Hamilton-L.B. Owens Airport, United States

Legend says people are wondering to this day how that piece of art is 100% free. Look at the official screenshots and compare with real pictures of the airport and you will realize that nothing was left behind. Everything is there, from buildings to signs. When it comes to details, MisterX6 is a god. Why not to download it right now?

KAVX – Catalina Island, United States

Catalina Island is a beautiful airport, but don’t let the beauty fool you. It’s one of the most challenging airports to land at, because of the runway elevation and the overall length. The scenery definitely looks as beautiful as the real life counterpart, with full photosceneric coverage of the whole island and highly-detailed buildings. Another masterpiece by MixterX6.

KSFO – San Francisco International Airport, United States

KSFO is one of the busiest airports in the whole world, and it’s definitely a must-have on X-Plane 11. It’s not only a high-quality rendition of the airport itself, but of the entire city of San Francisco! Yes, you heard it right! Expect a lot of VFR fun on this masterpiece by MisterX6.

KLAX – Los Angeles International, United States

Oh, the sunny Los Angeles! MisterX6 nailed it once again, bringing another payware-quality airport for free! The user reviews speak for themselves. It’s probably one of the best renditions of LAX to date.

KPDX – Portland International Airport, United States

It’s definitely one of the most amazing virtual renditions of Portland ever made. And it’s free, of course! MisterX6 nailed it once again! From the international gates to the cargo area, everything is perfectly modeled and accurately represented. Wonderful work and definitely a must-have.

Orthoscenery

A list of the best orthosceneries for X-Plane 11.

Lyndiman’s New Zealand Ortho Photography Set R2

Ever wanted to fly over New Zealand? Dream no more! With this incredible download, you can fly over high-resolution satellite imagery of NZ (ZL17) without any noticeable performance drops. And it looks amazing! The author edited the pictures manually to make sure that the colors match, way better than what you would obtain through unedited Ortho4Xp downloads.

Final Considerations

This guide is not a final product yet. There is a lot to be edited/added, which means that you can expect more content soon. I’ll update it as I download and test more sceneries. Keep an eye on it!
