Overview
L4D has a lot of bugs and exploits (if you’d like to call them that), which are unpatched. Additionally, there are many tips/tracks that you can utilize.I’ve gone over those, as well as a few other useful console commands that would make your game-play experience a lot better.Note that these a lot glitches/bugs/exploits are only applicable to campaign/survival and won’t be applicable to versus.
Idle bugs
Idling is just using the option within the game to “take a break”. It can be done via pressing Escape and then using the option “take a break”. This will put a survivor into AI mode until the press <LMB> to play again.
To speed up the process, create a bind to go idle. After using your bound key, click play again and you’ve successfully utilized the idle bug (wherever it applies).
IMPORTANT: You can only idle if there’s AT LEAST one human player with you (that isn’t idle). Therefore, it won’t work if you’re playing with all bots, or if you have three idle teammates, or an idle teammate with bots (et cetera). Do note that you cannot idle in versus, so the idle bug can’t be used there.
<1> If you go idle and then return back to the game after being vomited on by a boomer, you’ll get around the bile covered screen. This is one of the most useful exploits in L4D.
<2> If you idle when you begin the reload animation of the hunting rifle and then immediately return to the game, you’re able to get across some frames of the reload saving you some time (shorter reload).
<3> If you idle while in a “stuck spot” in any map, you’ll be either teleported to your teammates or to a safe room.
This can be useful in some scenarios but otherwise there’s really no reason to do it other than impressing the chicks that you happen to be playing with.
<4>If you idle after throwing a molotov next to a witch, she will be set on fire and won’t be startled by anyone. The fire will be regarded by the game as environmental fire.

Ladder blocking <tanks>
There is a very useful technique known as ladder blocking. You can basically block a tank from going up a ladder by standing at the top of the ladder he is about to climb. You must be at least standing on the laddder where visibly your player model is actually ON the ladder as the tank is climbing up.
Your teammates can then kill the tank, but warn them about friendly fire, since apparently, it seems as if a lot of players just spam their weapons.
It’s also a nice option to set the tank on fire and then block him, if you’re doing a solo run. Be aware of other special infected that can interrupt you, especially smokers, so ensure that the area is clear before kiting the tank to the ladder and blocking him.
This technique is very useful in the No Mercy finale because it has a ladder directly leading to the minigun as well as one other by the area where a grenade launcher would spawn in L4D2.
Faster fire-rate with the tier 1 <pump shotgun>
If you melee (mouse 2) immediately after firing the shotgun, you can cancel an animation.
As you’ve finished the melee, you can immediately fire again, effectively increasing your fire rate.
Sequence: <attack> <mouse2/shove> <attack> <mouse2/shove>
Changing your in-game name within changing Steam profile name
Open the console and use the command
Note: You’ll have to re-enter the command after every new map loaded.
Changing your in-game character after a game has started
This is possible if you go idle and then open and the console and enter…
Note: that this is only possible if you have another player with you that is NOT idle.
Creating a bind for <attack> when using your pistol(s)
You can automate firing the pistols using any other key of your choice instead of spamming default left click.
Here is the bind using mousewheels (just scroll)!
You can add these to an autoexec.cfg within your game, so you it can be saved.
Fast climbing a ladder (even as infected on versus)
The default speed when climbing a ladder is slow and completely unnecessary.
It can be sped up, when playing as a survivor or as infected in versus mode:
