Overview
This is a simple guide for those who just want to complete the challenge. There are no decent, up to date guides on this particular challenge on Steam, so I thought I’d create one. This is by no means the best or fastest way to do this but I only wanted to get the badge for the challenge and it worked for me. This is also my first guide ever so if you have any suggestions or constructive criticism to share, feel free to comment below. Enjoy!*CONTAINS SPOILERS*
General Info
The challenge, from the beginning to the end, takes place in Mystery Lake. Now you are the hunter and your job is to chase the Old Bear around Mystery Lake until it reaches the Bear Den where the challenge ends. The challenge isn’t very complicated or long compared to part one of the Hunted. If you play it safe you can complete the challenge relatively fast and without any restarting.
Some things to keep in mind when attempting this challenge:
1) The Old Bear cannot be killed when chased around the map. Shooting it’s behind when it is retreating is just wasting bullets. If you only shoot the Bear when you have to, you should be good with the ammo you get at the beginning.
2) Keep your distance. You never know if the bear is going to retreat when seeing you of if it is going to charge at you (In my game it was around a 50/50 chance at each location). Always approach it with the Bearkiller Rifle in hand so you can quickly shoot it in the face if need be.
3) The Bear isn’t going anywhere. The Bear will not despawn as far as I know so it will stay where it ran to while you sleep or cook some food. Unless you are speedrunning this challenge, there is no need to freeze and starve while doing it.
4) Beware of the wolves. Many places on the map are infested with wolves. You can loot extra ammo to kill them, but it is not necessary because you can use flares, stones etc to scare them away. Also shooting your gun to scare the bear also startles the wolves (or is it the massive stampeding bear?).
Remembering these points will get you through the challenge in first try.
The Chase
Starting from the Trapper’s Homestead, the path to the Den goes through 11 different locations, last one being the Den. The locations in order are:
Max’s Last Stand ->Tunnel Collapse ->Camp Office ->Frozen Creek ->Cabin ->Clear Cut ->Logging Camp ->River (Northern Access) ->River (Southern Access) ->Ice Fishing Huts ->Bear Den
(If you are new to the game then you can use community made maps of Mystery Lake to find the listed locations.)
Knowing where to find the Old Bear means you don’t have to rely on paw prints or blood spatters to find it. Now you can focus on warming yourself by the fire and getting a good night’s sleep (just like a hard-working hunter should). Best spots for that are Camp Office, Cabin, Logging Camp, Ice Fishing Huts (nearby houses on the edge of the lake). You start the game with bad clothes so scavenging new and repairing old clothes seems like a reasonable thing to do.
The Ending
When you reach the Old Bear’s Den (Near the lake) the bear charges out of the cave towards you. This time shooting will not stop it. The bear attacking cutscene will play out and you will be dragged into the cave. The end.
Congratulations! You have completed the challenge and earned the Hunted, part two badge.
