Overview
This guide is a chapter walkthrough and tells you how to get every achievement in the third chapter of King’s Quest in only two playthroughs of the chapter.
Intro
I know it’s been awhile since I’ve written one of these but now I’m back and hoping to breeze through the last few chapters and give you guys these helpful guides on how to unlock all the achievements in as little replays as possible.
For those of you who are new to my guides, these will not tell you how to beat the game. This deals mainly in what exactly you need to do for all the achievements, especially hidden/non-descript ones. So I won’t be helping you with how to solve every single puzzle in the game. The goal with my guides is to help you not miss achievements which cause you to replay the entire chapter over and over.
Anyways, while I’d love to give you guys a guide on how to get all achievements in only one playthrough, this is yet another one where you can’t. You have to play through this at least twice if you want all the achievements. This is because this whole chapter is about chosing between two different princesses, so there are two different endings both with their own perfect endings. The perfect endings are missable achievements that you can only get at the very end of the chapter.
Keep in mind, while you end up with either Vee or Neese at the end, you still could miss their perfect ending achievements. Their regular endings have no achievements aside from the generic one about completing chapter three.
Timelapse
During the opening timelapse scene, there’s a small puzzle that you need to solve in order to save an owl from being taken by a badger. There is one missable achievement here, although since it’s at the beginning of the chapter it’s one of the lesser annoying missable achievements.
A Poisonous Snake! (Secret)
Watch out, Graham!
To get this achievement, you first have to ignore the puzzle entirely. Just keep walking to the right past the crying owl family over and over. Old Graham will refuse to leave the owl family without helping, but if you keep going to the right and ignoring him then he will tell a dark story about how he gave in and ate the baby owl himself. After that head to the right again and you’ll be bit by a snake and die, which gets you the achievement and resets the scene. Now you can solve the puzzle and continue.
Daventry
For an achievement you’ll get later, while you’re in the dinning hall make sure you take all the townspeople photos from the back of the chairs. If you don’t. you miss the achievement. Also, it doesn’t matter which picture you choose as the face for your dinner guest since it goes back to your inventory afterwards anyways.
In the Tower
The perfect ending achievements are the two that you need to keep in mind throughout the whole chapter once you enter the castle. If you’ve never played a dating simulator or most visual novels, you need to remember you have to pick one romantic interest and stick with them the whole time for their true ending. You basically have to be a jerk to the other romanic options as well. Just keep in mind to always talk to your waifu choice first and give answers to dialogue choices that lean towards the romantic interests.
I do have my own theory that for the perfect ending all you need is to repair your girl’s item and end up with that girl, so if you want to test that out let me know the results. However, to be safe, I’d say just stick with going all out for your princess. (My first and true choice was Vee, by the way)
To get an idea of how you should answer certain questions, Vee is the intelligent, critial thinking, law & order type while Neese is the adventurous, caring, and messy type.
Also to save yourself some time when you go to replay later, right before you climb the tower you probably want to exit the game and duplicate your save file to a second slot before you continue. That way you don’t have to deal with all the intro stuff in your second playthrough.
Girls in the Tower
This tower was built to scale.
Story related and cannot be missed.
You meet the girls and you pick one soon after. Whichever one you pick, keep pursuing her throughout that playthrough. Otherwise you’ll have to do the chapter all over again just to get her perfect ending.
After making your initial choice, the tower will shake as it begins to move. At one point you’ll be asked to save a chest or a vase. Pick the chest for Vee, or the vase for Neese.
After the shaking stops, collect the four items on the ground (two books, a board game, and a painting). Then talk to your romantic interest first. After talking to her, present her with two of the four items you found that relate to her. She’ll tell you where they go. After you place both down, the tower will shake a bit revealing another item related to that girl. Bring it to her and she’ll tell you where it goes. Take it there and after placing it in there take the other item that was also in there. Then go to the vase that’s outside the forcefield and use the item you just found as your method of getting it. (Also yes you don’t actually have to talk to the other girl at all after you do this since the story will continue).
Moral Quarreler
Won a game of Moral Quarrel.
For this achievement, you have to win at the small social card game the girls have you play with them. It doesn’t matter who you win with, but for the perfect ending, keep in mind of who you’re trying to end up with when answering the questions. If you mess up and lose, just reload the game before it autosaves. But it should be easy to win.
Teenaged Townspeople
Discovered 3 portraits of younger townspeople.
When the girls go to bed and you venture downstairs, there should be a canvas on the wall which shows the young version of whoever is in front of it. Show the three portraits of the townspeople you grabbed during the Daventry scene of this chapter. You should get the achievement after showing them.
Daventry, Dancing, and Your Ending Confirmed
One morning you should find both princesses trying to fix their items. After talking to your girl (make sure to do this first) and then the other girl, you should be able to access the teleporter at the bottom to go back to Daventry. Here, make sure you go to Amaya’s so that she can give you the wrench to repair your girl’s item. If you don’t go to Amaya, you could risk missing the perfect ending achievement.
Working more towards your perfect ending, there will be a point where you have a princess ball. At this ball, you, the beautiful Princess Graham, do a lovely dance with the other princesses. There will be parts towards the end however where you can pick your own direction to dance in. Always dance towards your girl. If your progress towards your girl is going well, then Hagatha should pull the other girl aside and yell at her for messing up the routine.
After teleporting to the cave where you encounter Manny, you’ll then be sent on two missions. One with Vee, one with Neese. However, whichever mission is the second mission will 100% be the princess you end the chapter with. So if your first mission is with Vee, your ending is with Neese (and vice versa). While this tells you if you succeeded in landing your waifu, it doesn’t tell you if you got the perfect ending. That you can only find out during the last cutscene of the chapter.
Vee’s Mission
Gears of Shore (Secret)
Solved a puzzle on the beach.
For Vee’s mission, you’ll have a choice to lower a bridge with your strength or your mind…obviously you use your mind for this achievement and solve a gear puzzle in order to lower the bridge.
Additionally, to land more points towards her perfect ending, when shooting arrows at the goblins make sure to listen to which goblins you’re supposed to shoot and which Vee wants to shoot. Don’t be a jerk and try to win, she gets upset about losing.
Neese’s Mission
Wedzel Wolf Watch Waiver (Secret)
Spared the life of a Wedzel Wolf.
During Neese’s mission, after falling down the hill, make sure not to shoot the Wedzel Wolf and you’ll get this achievement.
Also for this mission, if you’re going towards the Neese perfect ending this time around, there is a way you can earn bonus points towards her love. When adding parts to the log, pick the rose and instead of using it on the log give it to Neese. She’ll love it and accept the rose. Then you can just go back and make your normal pick.
Endings
Now it’s finally time to see if all your hard work paid off or if you have to go through it all again just for one achievement.
And They Lived…
Completed Chapter 3
No matter which ending you get, you will get this achievement.
Perfect Puzzle Partner (Secret)
Gave the perfect present to Vee.
If you aimed for Vee this playthrough, hopefully you got this achievement.
Harmonious Husband (Secret)
Gave the perfect present to Neese.
If you aimed for Neese this playthrough, hopefully you got this achievement.
If you didn’t get either perfect ending achievements, unfortunately you have to replay the entire chapter again. Try not to screw up again or you’ll have to retry all over.
Outro
Thank you for being patient with me with this guide. I know there’s a lot more for this chapter I’d like to experiment with, since it seems no one else I’ve found has been able to properly determine what is required for the perfect ending, but I need to move on to the other chapters that are out now first and make those guides before I come back to make more changes to this one.
As for my opinion of this chapter, it was really interesting and had me really torn about choosing one girl over the other, especially during the last scene. But I still feel like we were cheated with the length of the chapter. Both chapter two and three weren’t nearly as long as chapter one, sadly. In the end I chose Vee as my princess and will continue the next chapters with that chocie, which I’m told may actually be an impact on chapter four, but I know nothing about that chapter other than it’s title.
Let me know if you’ve discovered anything you want me to add to this guide or any cool optional actions you found as well!
