Characters of Outlast

Overview

Created to help Outlast players, this guide will tell you all of the characters, and what to do if the not-so-friendly ones are pursuing you. Note that some facts and fun facts were taken and reworded from the Outlast Wiki.

Basic information about Outlast

Story– You are investigative journalist Miles Upshur. Based on an anonymous tip about an old asylum, Mount Massive Asylum for the Criminally Insane, you journey to Colorado to investigate on September 17th, 2013. In 2009, the asylum was reopened by the Murkoff Corporation in hopes of making profit from a project they named Project WALRIDER.

Controls– The game’s controls are pretty straightforward. You use the keys ‘W’, ‘A’, ‘S’, and ‘D’ to move. ‘W’ moves you forward, ‘A’ moves you left, ‘S’ moves you backwards, and ‘D’ moves you right. You also use ‘Q’ to lean left and ‘E’ to lean right. You can interact with left-click, pull up/put down your camcorder with right-click, and zoom in and out (only when camcorder is up) by scrolling your middle mouse button. You activate the sprint function with ‘Shift’.

Chris Walker

Short Biography- Chris Walker is one of the more common antagonists in Outlast. As a result of his mutation, Walker has become extremely musclebound, but has remained athletic. He possesses a sort of awareness, as he is able to find Miles by listening for movement or checking lockers.

Abilities- Walker is able to leap over obstacles and run almost as fast as Miles, while also being able to pick a full grown man up with one hand, or even rip the body away from the head.

Personality- Walker displays anger management issues as well as sudden excitement when he sees Miles.

Status- Died September 18th, 2013.

Help- If you’re stuck at the part where Walker enters the decontamination chamber, you need to quickly turn around and jump up into the airvent that has conveniently opened. Then, after jumping down, you need to run as fast as you can to the decontamination chamber and get blown out the window.

Full Dialogue-
(various grunting, panting, and growling sounds)
(some parts of quotes are unintelligible)
“Enhanced bio-metrics. Bleeding in the ears and nose. Hemorrhaging in the eyes. No inquiry”
“…Accountability pending.”
“You were here, weren’t you? Little pig. (grunts) I’ll find all of you ♥♥♥♥♥♥.”
“Careful. Ghost. Sewer. Dead.”
“You’re close, aren’t you?”
“No, no. What is that? I hear a little rat. Come out…”
“…One to bleed.”
“Little ghost, you don’t have to hide from me.”
“♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I’ll find you.”
“…Still close. Still close. On point.”
“We have to contain it.”
“That noise. Walrider. No, no! (various screams and coughs until death)”
“I’m comin'”
“You won’t have to kill yourself. I’ll make the pain stop.”
‘Little pig.”
“Little pig, little pig. No more escape.”
“Contained.”
“Hush. Hush!”

Fun Facts-

  • When Walker exclaims ‘Little pig!’, he could be referring to Miles as a sacrificial pig.

‘Father’ Martin Archimbaud

Short Biography- Martin Archimbaud was originally a patient in the asylum. After everything in the asylum went from bad to worse, Martin became the sort of boss of everything, attempting to spread his ‘gospel’ by converting everyone in the asylum to his Walrider-worshiping religion. Near the end of the game, the player can see ‘Father’ Martin nailed to a makeshift cross. After a few seconds of him talking to Miles, he says “Now, my son,” and a Variant burns the cross and Martin with it. His pained screams can be heard for a few seconds.

Personality- Martin seems devoted to his religion, eventually ‘sacrificing’ himself for his cause in hopes of resurrection.

Status- Died September 18th, 2013.

Full Dialogue-
“It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoke to Billy, but seeing you put it from you and judge yourself unworthy of everlasting life. Lord, we turn to those unaffected by visions. Glory in the end of science.”
“You are not a prophet, Martin, only a Witness. Do not stray.”
“[singing “There is a Fountain Filled With Blood”]”
“One foot and then the other. There will be time to rest soon, old man.”
“He will do, I think he will. God does not test by half-measures.”
“It won’t last long; don’t worry. It will be over soon. You’ll only have to bear it a little longer, and then we will all rise.”
“We’re casting a cathedral bell in sand. It’s a question of faith. You only need to hold on. The bleeding will stop soon.”
“(coughs) My job. You alone shall escape to tell them. This is your penultimate act of Witness. The promise of the prophets was always freedom from death, and here it is. You will watch and record my death, my resurrection, and together, we will be free. You are no longer in any danger. I’ve fixed the elevator. It will take you to freedom. We will all of us be free. Now, my son. (screams until death)”
“And who are you, then? …I-I see. Merciful God, you have sent me an apostle. Guard your life, son. You have a calling.”
“I’m sorry, my son. I didn’t want to have to do this to you, but you can’t leave. Not yet. There is so much yet for you to witness. Will you see it? Can you? Our lord, the Walrider, tearing his truth into the unbelievers. The only way out of this place is the truth. Accept the gospel and all doors will open before you.”
“Thank God you survived. I feared that secular maniac would carve you up like the others. Meet me outside. We’re close now.”
“(shouting to Miles from two floors up) You saw the Walrider, didn’t you? You’re beginning to understand, but not yet. Even Abraham had to cast his eyes to the ground. But soon. Soon! This way! Revelation is at hand!”
“Nearly here! You can cross from the upper floors!’
“…Only God needs to be so mysterious…”
“He will see it. He will tell them. God must spread by the Word.”
“Our children who art here on Earth hallowed by their from, their kingdom at hand, their will our will, on Earth which shames Heaven. Give us for our waking dreams and deliver us from evil as we deliver those who do evil for profit. Erase temptation through action, for thine is thy kingdom, and the power, and the glory and kingdom and…ever.”
“Pater non est Filius. Filius non est Spiritus. And Spiritus non Pater. Toto est Deus. (Latin for: The Father is not the Son. Son is not the Spirit. And the Spirit is not the Father. In the whole of God.)”
“Friends. Children. I need your help. Where are you?”
“You are. We will join the Walrider in just a moment.”

Some audio was unintelligible to me, but here’s the audio version of the dialogue: [link]

Fun Facts-

  • ‘Father’ Martin’s priest’s outfit is though to be fashioned from a straightjacket, and at times, a

buckle is visible.

  • Martin likes to finger paint the path for Miles in blood.

The following image contains potential spoilers. If you do not want to spoil a part of the gameplay, do not look at the image below.

Martin’s death:

‘Pyro’

Short Biography – Pyro is a Variant who set fire to the messhall in Mount Massive. He seems rather suicidal, being that he wants to burn to death in the kitchen rather than stay in Mount Massive.

Status- Presumed alive as of September 17th, 2013.

Richard Trager

Short Biography- Richard Trager is one of the more major antagonists that appear in Outlast. His main role is cutting off Miles’ left index finger and right ring finger with a pair of oversized human bone shears. He is an insane ‘doctor’ who worked at the asylum. He has a patient’s drip accessory on his left arm.

Abilities- While pursuing Miles, Trager has the ability to intelligently open doors. Trager also carries around the pair of bone shears he used to cut off your right index finger and left ring finger off with him.

Personality- Trager is severely deranged, but remains calm (most of the time) under pressure. He retains enough sanity to open doors and try to hold a conversation with Miles. At times, though, he does display some anger issues.

Status- Died September 17th, 2013.

Full Dialogue-
“Who’s down there? You’re not one of ’em, are you? Quick! Get in the dumbwaiter if you want to live!”
“Come on, man! Get in! I’ve seen what they’re capable of!”
“You made the right choice here, buddy.”
“…Heavier than you look. A little cardio wouldn’t kill you.”
“Okay, here we go. Arms and legs inside the car at all times. (chuckles)”
“Hey, you’re that little ♥♥♥♥ priest’s guy, aren’t you? (chuckles) His Witness or whatever. You must be…exhausted. Let’s take a break, huh, buddy; the old two-martini lunch, hmm, have a little confab. blah blah, blah blah blah…”
“You know, I love the mountain air up here at night. You wanna head out, take a stroll? Go ahead, I’ll wait here. Go on, run free! (laughs) I’m in no hurry. No? Alright. Nose to the grindstone. I like that. Okay, then, right this way.”
“(laughs) Yeah, yeah, we’re just waiting for your insurance to clear. (to Miles) Truth be told, I was just tired of licking my own stamps.”
“Shh! Shh-shh-shh! You weren’t putting that tongue to any use anyway.”
“Here we are, then.”
“Uh, thanks so much for coming by. We’ll begin your consultation in a moment. I’ll just need a second to wash up, and…Oh! Home movies! And it’ll…give us a chance to talk.”
“(inhales) You know, I’m a bit worried how much time you’ve been spending with ‘Father’ Martin. I-I know…I hope you haven’t been letting him confuse you with his…’holier-than-thou’ Bible thumping. Uh, no offense to the man, but I sometimes worry he might just be a little bit…crazy. It’s understandable, I mean, people get scared. They’re as likely to turn to God as anything else. God died with the gold standard. We’re onto a more concrete faith now.”
“This is profit, pure and simple. You have to rob Paul to pay Peter, there-there’s no other way. Murder is the simplest form, but what happens when all the money’s gone? Well, money becomes a matter of faith, and that’s what I’m here for. To make you…believe.”
“(grunts) (chuckles) You payin’ attention? (grunts) Don’t pass out on me. There’s still a lot for you to absorb.”
“There. Better now, right? You understand what we’ve achieved here? We’ve made the consumer into the means of production. This thing is gonna sell itself!”
“I suppose ‘Father’ Martin wants you to spread the word. Am I right or am I right, huh? Boy, that man’s preaching a DEAD GOSPEL! The thing about our new product is it’s gonna sell itself!”
“Okay, okay, I’m here. Listen, I am in the middle of a consultation, so you’ll have to make it quick. Where?”
“Of course he was, Mr. Langin. Was he poking around in your dreams trying to take your Jell-O again? Mr. Langin, you can’t make a deal if you’ve got nothing to bargain with. (laughs) I see what’s happening here. You’re bored; you want a little attention. Perfectly understandable. I’m here for you. I’ll give you…very special attention.”
“Oh, come on, buddy. We’re not done yet!”
“Oh, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. How did you get out? We’re gonna have to do something about those hamstrings.”
“Hey! Nobody likes a quitter!”
“Aren’t you a slippery little ♥♥♥♥♥♥?”
“Let’s teach you the seven habits of highly eviscerated people.”
“Huh. Langin was right. I guess I’ll just have to kill you outright.”
“(grunts) LET ME… (grunts) SELL YOU… (grunts) the dream.”
“Oh. Buddy. What’re you tryin’ to do? I gave you a chance, didn’t I? Old Rick, tryin’ to give you a hand. Well, I can’t help somebody who doesn’t wanna be helped. …You’re fired.”
“♥♥♥♥! ♥♥♥♥, REALLY?! (grunts) YOU’RE GONNA WALK ON ME?! If there’s one thing I cannot ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ STAND is a QUITTER!! COME ON!!”
“(inhales then exhales) All right. All right. You can figure this out. Let’s…solve some problems.”
“Hold up there, buddy! I’ll be right with you!”
“Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose here. I don’t make the rules.”
“All these bureaucrats with their corporate luncheons and golden parachutes. Where are the survivors? Where are the sharks? I’ve been chumming the waters long enough.”
“I need you to be workin’ with me here, buddy.”
“Yeah…I should have cut his feet first. Amateur move.”
“Buddy!”
“I’m a closer. That’s who I am!”
“Let me sell you the dream!”
“Well, aren’t you a quick little bunny?”
“Okay, this isn’t a problem. I can solve this! Hang right there for me!”
“(pants) I’m not givin’ up on you! (various grunts until death)”

Help- While being pursued by Trager, I have one word of advice that you NEED to take. Run. Just run.

The ‘Brothers’ AKA The Twins

Short Biography- The ‘Brothers’ are two Variants who pursue Miles. They do not run towards the player, but rather walk. They wear no clothing whatsoever. Approaching one when being pursed by them will lead to instantaneous death rather than being hit. They do not taunt the player and cannot be heard due to wearing no clothing. Also, they do not speak and are silent killers. It is believed ‘Father’ Martin can control them.

Abilities- They are able to leap over waist-high objects like Miles, and can intelligently open doors rather than smashing them down.

Status- Presumed alive as of September 17th, 2013.

The Walrider & William ‘Billy’ Hope

Short Biography- The Walrider is a swarm of nanobots that can possess a person who has undergone enough horrors to activate the morphogenic engine. The Walrider is controlled by William Hope.

Abilities- The Walrider can follow Miles wherever he goes, even if he slips through a gap. The Walrider possesses enough strength to overpower even Chris Walker, as seen in a cutscene in which Walker is brutally murdered by the Walrider. Its strength is great enough to smash the player against a wall and literally splatters them into just a pile of leftover body parts. The Walrider is easily the strongest enemy in the game.

Personality- The Walrider shows immense strength, power, and intelligence. He was able to kill Chris Walker in only a few hits.

Status of Billy Hope- Died September 18th, 2013.

Status of the Walrider- Alive as of September 18th, 2013.

Help- Be careful;this one’s a little tricky. If you want to escape the Walrider, you need to run as fast as you can, calling on all the things you’ve learned about chase scenes throughout the game.

Fun Facts-

  • When the player first sees the Walrider in the storage shed outside, they get a note that says ‘God help me, I think I’ve seen the Walrider’.

Doctor Rudolph Wernicke

Short Biography- Making his first appearance near the end of the game, Wernicke says he is ‘older than sin’ and he should be dead. William Hope is somehow keeping him alive out of sympathy for him. He instructs Miles to shut off Hope’s life support.

Status- Presumed dead as of September 18th, 2013.

Fun Facts- If the player stays long enough, Wernicke will talk about how he regrets making the nanobots in the first place and how no one is allowed to leave alive, hinting at the game’s end.

Miles Upshur (Player)

Short Biography- Miles Upshur is an independent journalist investigating Mount Massive Asylum for the Criminally Insane. He received an anonymous tip about illegal activity going on in the asylum. Miles’ shadow can be seen throughout the game, and the player can notice he has short, shaved hair. At the game’s finale, Miles gets possessed by the Walrider. Judging by the sounds at the end after Miles gets shot, he is the new Walrider.

Abilities- Miles is capable of amazing athletic feats, whether it be jumping off a ledge to solid ground or running just quick enough to escape the psychotic patients know as Variants. He is not categorized as ‘weak’, but he stands no chance against the patients, and relies on running, hiding, or blending into darkness to escape them.

Status- Alive as of September 18th, 2013.

Fun Facts-

  • Miles’ model in-game doesn’t have a head, and a bloody neck can be seen instead of it. You can see it by looking down when walking across a ledge or by looking up when crawling.
  • Miles’ dark sense of humor is revealed in notes that he writes.
  • Miles may never talk, but his voice is heard through his gasps, screams, and breaths.
  • Judging by his hands, he is in his twenties.
  • Miles, Stephenson (the impaled guard), and Waylon Park all share the same voice actor.
