Fixes for Crashes, Bugs, etc.
There is no particular order or guarantee
- Make sure game (check betas), OS, GPU, etc. are up to date.
- Attempt loading a new campaign with a different lord or relaunching the game.
- Verify local files in the game’s properties window. (This solves most problems.)
- Restart Steam and/or computer.
- Disable mods (try to advance turn then re-enable mods, can save a campaign)
- Unsubscrible from all mods, check “…Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent594570“
- Check “…SteamsteamappscommonTotal War WARHAMMER IIdata” (and other folders) for mod files and duplicate files, delete them. Be sure to verify files afterwards just in case
- Delete the game’s registry, this will delete all local settings (including cinematic and battle unlocks)
(Run [Win+R] “regedit” and navigate to “ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREThe Creative AssemblyWarhammer2” and delete the folder. It is a good idea to export a copy before deleting. Be careful in the registry!) - Delete the CA launcher folders in Steam and appdata then verify local files
(“…SteamsteamappscommonTotal War WARHAMMER IIlauncher” and “…AppDataRoamingThe Creative AssemblyLauncher”) - If all else fails, uninstall the game and delete/clear the all Warhammer 2 folders listed above and below for a complete wipe
(Uninstall doesn’t remove everything) - Some CPUs will run too hot (usually if it’s old)
Originally posted by ElokoMs:Look at your CPU temps. I guess they are >90 and your CPU is throttling. If yes, then lower your CPU voltage with e.g. Throttlestop.
Download HWinfo and start with sensors only and play the game a bit. It will show you in the CPU DTS tab, if there is thermal throttling.
In Throttlestop click the FIVR-Button, then lower the Offset-Voltage of CPU-Core and CPU-Cache step by step. -90mV as start should be save and both values should be equal. Use the TS Bench in Throttlestop to test your values.
- Arty/Tower Bug: Move artillery further away and/or place them at a ~45 degree angle from the face of tower you can’t hit, facing the corner to find a gap in the barricades of Heaven
- Having an emoji in your Steam name can prevent the game from launching
Improve Performance
Easy ways to improve performance:
- Use DX11 (can fix crashes too)
- Turn off blood effects
- Reduce corpse lifespan
- Turn down shadows, reflections, fog, FXAA
- Delete some old save files to improve load times and fps (“C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingThe Creative AssemblyWarhammer2save_games” – Run “%appdata%” or enter “%appdata%” in the File Explorer address bar to find the folder quickly)
- A SSD can help reduce load times with fast read/write speeds
(I use a newer HDD and it runs fine but SSD is the most often recommended upgrade) -

Go to Nvidia Control Panel (not GeForce)
Click Manage 3D Settings
Click Program Settings
Choose Total War: WARHAMMER II as the program you want to customize
Scroll down through the option and turn OFF ‘Shader Cache’This alone should resolve most issues (game crash on launch, screen tear, green screen, block text/white scuffed screen) with this patch[461.72] for people using older Nvidia GPUs.
You can also try within the same menu to turn OFF ‘Texture Filtering – Anisotropic sample optimization’, and/or ‘Triple Buffering’.
- Audio stuttering
Originally posted by Slurms MacKenzie:Setting audio quality to low/medium and then back to high always fixed it for me.
Originally posted by 404 Float not found:The thing that ultimately fixed my issue was Make sure “Allow Applications to take exclusive control of the device” is unchecked. in Sound Settings, Device properties, additional/advanced (its in the advanced tab of the device properties). Though any of the other things in the list might help you. Explanations included.
- Close the game at least once every 3-4 hours (I’ve heard there are some tiny memory files that keep getting generated and are not deleted until the game closes)
