Overview
This is a small guide that I am hoping will help players finds tips on how to play as survivors on Damned. The longer you survive, the easier it becomes to survive, so surviving the first few minutes is the most important part of the game when playing as a survivor.
Introduction
Damned is a co-op multiplayer horror game where you must survive long enough to escape an area before the monster finds you. During this guide I will describe basic ways to survive against the monster (mostly Lurker), and how to get you and your friends to the exit.
A bit about me. I have had Damned for a week or two, and instantly fell in love with it. I have about 20 hours played, but have found out most of the basic things in the game, and how to survive most matches.
You can either read the entire guide, or you can read the bullets at the end for a quick recap. I try to give reasoning for my thinking in the guide, but not in the bullets. If you have any questions you can ask me here or add me on steam.

Batteries. Batteries add an important part to the game. It forces you to have to conserver your flashlight, or find more batteries to recharge it. Some rooms you find will have multiple batteries, if you find multiple or you do not need to use a battery, then do not use it. Don’t use the battery just to use it, others may need it or you may need it later as the game goes on.
How to Play Survivor
Playing as a survivor takes a lot of thinking. Most of what it takes to play effectively as a survivor comes from playing the game, but you can learn things that will help you become a better survivor faster. The whole point of playing a survivor is to collect the keys, unlock the doors, find the crowbar or hammer, and then escape. There are several different types of key:
Room key, normally goes to a wooden door.
Metal key, normally goes to a metal door.
Rusty key, random by what I have seen.
Old key, just like rusty key.
Numberic Code, always goes to a safe.
Silver key, always goes to exit door, most of the time you only need 1, but sometimes you will need two.
There is also the crowbar/hammer (they both do the same thing). They remove wooden boards that are on doors. There are always boards on the exit door, but sometimes you will encounter other doors throughout the level that will require a crowbar. It is smart to take the boards off any door you find with boards on it (even the exit door if you don’t have the silver keys) incase you die, your teammates will be able to continue searching without having to find your body.
Finding dead teammates. To me it is the scariest thing in the game. Most of the time the monster will be waiting for you to come to the body in order to collect the things, so most of the time I will just continue searching for a minute or two before I begin searching for the body, but if you absolutely have to search the body in order to continue, try to trick the monster. If it is a lurker, set off a trap nearby to trick the lurker into spawning, then be ready to run. If it is a phantom, and if there are atleast two survivors, have one survivor run pretty far away in order to have the phantom chase them.
When the Game Starts
The moment the game starts you should tab and figure out what monster you are playing against. Knowing the monster you are playing against is the biggest key to surviving. As of right now, there are only two options:
There is the Lurker. The Lurker is the most popular among the community. The Lurker is in ghost form most of the game, where it can not see any doors or people, and just moves around and sets traps while trying to predict where the survivors may be at.
There is also the Phantom. The Phantom is the least popular of the two monsters. The Phantom finds survivors by sounds.
Once you find out which monster you are playing against, now figure out your plan. If you are playing against:
Lurker
Lurker, than it is wise to just sprint every where for the first 20-30 seconds and collect keys and open doors as fast as you can. The Lurker will be stuck in ghost form during the first 20-30 seconds, so it is vital to quickly open some areas to hide in before he can spawn. Most Lurkers will spawn as soon as they can, so you need to be aware of the time they can spawn and be ready to hide. Music will play when the Lurker is spawned, and it will stop when he despawns. When he despawns, depending on how long he was spawned, he will have a cooldown before he can turn into physical form again, so use this time wisely and either run, if he found you or knows where you are at, or quickly search the area around you and be ready to hide if the music starts. It is very useful early in the game to close doors to major rooms that branch off into a lot of other rooms so the Lurker won’t know where you are at. This can buy you several minutes if you are careful and don’t hit traps.
Phantom
Phantom, is a difficult monster to play against, but can also be very frusterating to play as if the survivors are smart. The Phantom is always in physical form, and relies on sound for the most part. The most common way a Phantom finds survivors is when survivors hit a trap, which will cause a white outline around the survivor(s) that were near the trap when it was activated, that she can see through walls. If you play smart though, you can practically make it so the Phantom never finds you. If you know most of the traps in the game (clocks, timers, ouija boards, ladders, lighs on the walls and ceiling, and loose boards are to name most of them) then you can move around them and not alert the Phantom of your position. You can also see the Phantom at all times while she is walking around, so if she is near you, follow these steps:
1) Determine where she is going, if shes going opposite way just sit tight for a moment and wait a second, but if she is coming near you DO NOT RUN. I know it is very difficult to not run, but if you run she will know where you are at.
2) If she is walking towards your direction, then find a place to stand. DO NOT STAND IN CORNERS. The Phantom is a player, they will think like a player, and will 95% of the time check the corners. It is normally better to just stand in the middle of the room and wait it out. It will be scary, but you will live more often than if you hid in the corner.
3) If you followed both steps and she is still going to find you, time it just right so right when she walks within range of being able to sense you are there, run as fast as you can through her. DO NOT try to run around her. She is a player, as will have reflexes of a player. If you try to run around the Phantom you are only giving her more time to hit you. If you run straight through her than you will normally get far enough to escape.
4) If the phantom knows where you are (music is playing) keep walking opposite way. Do not run unless you absolutely have to.
Quick Guide
Lurker
1) Run around for first 20-30 seconds
2) Know your escape route at all times
3) Figure out when to keep a door open and when to close it
4) Know the different musics
Phantom
1) Never run unless you have to
2) Don’t flick flashlight on and off
3) Don’t check door locks over and over
4) Leave doors open
Final Words
Please leave comments on what you liked and what you feel like could of been better. My first guide, so I don’t expect it to be perfect, but I hope it helps newer people and people that may have played for awhile. If you would like me to make a guide for the monsters also, please let me know and I will get to working on it. Good luck playing and have fun.
