Complete stage, boss, and power guide for Metagal

Overview

This is going to be a complete guide of every stage, boss, and power since it bothers me that there aren’t any at all.

Video

Yea, instead of making a different video for each section, I’ll just be posting my speedrun of the game (too lazy). Most of this guide will be based on it and will explain each stage in detail, but there are mistakes and missing details here and there. It will be a mix of ‘going as fast as possible’ strategies and ‘just getting through the stage’ and the like. This was all also done entirely on my own obervasions so I may be wrong about a few things. All of this applies as of version 1.1.1

Tutorial

I don’t really have to describe this do I?

Gal.02 Dash

While I know this is out of order, I actually recommend completing this stage first. Ok, here we go (skip to 58 seconds since I can’t get it to automatically start at a specific time without breaking):

Screen 1: Pretty simple, jump left, then jump right. At the bottom, there will be a flame spinner and a met (I don’t actually know any of the enemy names so I will be making them up). But yea, I just recommend damage boosting through with the met’s bullet. Below that, stand on the left side of the platform and take out the flame guy.

Screen 2: Get on top of the flame spinner and take out the flame guy and proceed. This is a pretty difficult section to avoid taking hits unless you take your time, but as I do in the video, just shoot what you can and damage boost (not exactly as the video though). Also take the gear at the end of the screen.

Screen 3: Blast fire guy upon entering.

Screen 4: Dash jump as soon as possible if you want to get under the pogo robo, avoid the fire in the next section, and after that, if you aren’t fast enough, just be patient to avoid taking hits. You also need a power to reach that health.

Screen 5: Oh boy, insta death lava. Just reach every safe spot and wait it out COMPLETELY before continuing. If the lava is even slightly visible, it will still instantly kill you. You can skip the 2nd safe spot if you think you can though.

Screen 6: Shoot the rolly guy, fall down, and shoot the fire turrent sitting there. Also watch out for the insta death flame beams.

Screen 7: Checkpoint, you can die in the lava to fully restore your health without having to use a rebirth and not have to worry about the enemies on the screen. Shoot the rolly guy if you don’t mind waiting, but under it where the met is located is a passive powerup area (which I’ll go into more detail about them later), but requires warp gal’s power to access it. But moving on, there is another pogo robo, kill it if you like, but I use the met’s bullet to damage boost through it since it does less damage. Rest is self explanitory.

Screen 8: Dashing time. Jump over the turrent’s bullet and continue. In the middle, you will see a scum bag fire guy. Unless you want to risk getting obliterated by the flame beam, damage boost.

Screen 9: Grab the gear and wait for the 2 mini flames on the ladder to go off before rushing for it.

Screen 10: Self explanitory

Boss: Alright, so she has 4 possible attacks that she can do: Stand and flamethrower (what she always does first), Flame dash on the ground (invincible), dash in the air and drop fireballs, and fire smash the ground. She always walks for about 2 seconds before using the flamethrower. Keep your distance and you’ll be fine. If you are backed to a wall, jump over her as she will not use another move if she is walking. For her fireballs, stand in the middle, but slightly to the left or right. Wait to see if a fireball is above you and dash. If not, then you won’t get hit. For her ground flame dash, just dash jump over it. And for her fire smash, if you have enough space, just dash slighty behind you and you will dodge it, but if you are backed to a wall, immediately dash under it. If this is not your first stage, I recommend using shield gal’s power even though she is weak to the mines. Damage is more consistent and easier to land.

Power: So as I said before, I recommended completing this stage first for her power, and she is the easiest boss (I think) to beat with just the basic blaster. The dash is extremely useful for after it is used, you gain about a second of invincibility, it makes certain jumps easier, and it is shield gal’s weakness. One thing that might confuse people is the fact that it only deals damage on the 2nd half of the animation.

Gal.01 Shield

stage starts at 3:55

This will be based on having only the fire dash up to this point. All stages afterward are going to be based going in order. (PS: This is also my favorite theme in the game)

Screen 1: Not too hard. Just be sure not to fall in the pits and take your time if you want.

Screen 2: Be carful not do dash into the spikes and you can kill those electric guys or damage boost through them.

Screen 3: Jump from the first platform and use the fire dash which will give you enough I-frames to go through the shield guy.

Screen 4: Shoot the bombs and try to fire dash as soon as possible before you get hit, but otherwise just damage boost.

Screen 5 Robo Crab: Fairly simple mini boss, if you walk in it’s targeting sight, it will fire a laser. You deal damage by shooting it’s green orbs. Once enough damage has been delt to one, it closes. For the left and right ones in particular, they will alternate. For the bottom one however, you can go under it and it automatically opens again. When there isn’t enough space to attack one on the side, just re-open the bottom one and attack it a few more times.

Screen 6: Take out or damage boost through the first 2 laser turrents, and a passive upgrade room is located on the ladder at the top which can be grabed after you use the fire dash. That room is filled with enemies though so either take your time to blast them all or just damage boost.

Screen 7: Self explanitory

Screen 8: This room is far easier with the fire dash than with nothing which is why I prefer to have it here. Fire dash to the right, get on a moving platform, fire dash left and grab the gear, get on another platform and wait for the laser turrent to fire, then go.

Screen 9: Self explanitory

Boss: So shield gal can only do 3 things: Shooting and jumping while moving forward (always does this first), shield attack, and dash. Every time she is stunned, she releases lightning orbs in 5 directions, but they’re easy to dodge. This fight is a cake walk with the fire dash. At the very start, you can jump and hit her with a fire dash. Every time she gets stunned from it, you can get one burst attack in for extra damage. To dodge her shield attack, just jump. For her jumping and shooting attack, always give yourself enough space so you can have enough time to react. When you jump over her shots, you can either jump over her, or dash under her when she jumps again. But even if you get hit a lot, you should still have no problem.

Power: Aimbot bullets and warp gal’s weakness. The most effective power against enemies that you otherwise couldn’t hit, and a few other bosses. It can also block other bullets. Only down side is that it disappears if you climb a ladder. Spam this if you see a thing and want it to die.

Gal.04 Warp

2nd hardest stage in the game in my opinion. Stage starts at 7:05:

Screen 1: Uhhhh.. shield spam. Grab the health at the end

Screen 2: Fire dash when you don’t feel like waiting

Screen 3: Take your time or fire dash

Screen 4: Avoid mets, dash through falling drills.

Screen 5: Fire dash…

Screen 6: Move left then right to avoid spikes

Screen 7: Here is where the fun begins. There will be platforms on the ceiling that turn from green to orange (warning) to red. When it is green and orange for 1 second, it will shift the gravity. When it turns red, it turns off. For this entire room, if you die, don’t use rebirth as continue brings you back to the same place. Move forward when it is green, stop in a safe place before it turns red. Fire dash can be used here as well. Once you get towards the end, there will be a ladder which advances to the next room, but continuing to go left, you will enter a passive powerup room. This room however is by far one of the hardest and when you die, you go ALL the way back to the checkpoint, even with rebirth. You can do what I did, or (attempt) to take a slower safer route.

Screen 8: This room is also a pain, but fire dash is your friend. Take your time if you need too.

Screen 9: Even more of a pain. Try to stay on the top route and at the last jump, wait for it to turn red unless you are damage boosting.

Screen 10: Try not to get hit while getting pulled up, can be annoying.

Screen 11: Green portal, wait, blue portal, purple portal, wait, green portal, blue portal then wait. Then advance.

Boss: Shield, you will not lose (what I actually did in the video was not on purpose). I guess I’ll explain her attacks anyways. Moving and jumping (dash under it), she goes in the middle and sends two orbs in both directions (jump over it), and gravity orb drops (just don’t get sucked in).

Power: Buster gal’s weakness. This is the most odd of the powers. When you shoot an enemy with it, you will switch places with them. But if you use it on an enemy that can’t be warped, it will instead blow up and distort time and space and rip it apart (basically, it deals the most damage of all powers, but only on specific enemies and bosses).

Gal.03 Buster

Just an average stage, but some tough platforming here and there. Starts at 11:30:

Screen 1: You can approach this in a variety of ways, the easiest would just be to spam shield which works.

Screen 2: Grab the gear and health on your way down if you want, still use shield.

Screen 3: Shield (or damage boost), then take your time with the platforms

Screen 4, Armored robo guy: Warp in his eye, dash under, shoot in his eyes, repeat. Watch out for his extended arm attack. When you beat him, DO NOT stand to the very left or else once he lands on you, you will instantly die.

Screen 5: You can reach the ledge on the far left if you use a fire dash. This is the last of the passive powerup rooms. If you go all the way through it, you will end up on screen 6 from the left.

Screen 6: SHIELD.. until you get to the platforms. It’s not too difficult, but can still be a bit of a challenge. The explosions of the platforms can also hit you.

Screen 7: Shield robo hive for health if you want, and climb the left side as it is easier. Grab the gear towards the top if you want as well.

Screen 8: SHIELD (or damage boost)

Boss: Hardest boss in the game, but not as hard at least with warp. Possible moves: Move forward and shoot (use warp), 3 missiles (jump over them then use warp), MINES (warp), and her super dash attack (it doesn’t do damage however unless you hit a wall, then it HURTS). If you are in the middle however, the dash attack will just push you to a side.

Power: Very useful for getting to high places and a bit of movement, but that’s about it. It may be useful as a weapon in SOME instances, but for the most part, the other powers outshine this one.

Gal.0X Chaos

Better get used to this theme. Starts at 14:35

Screen 1: SHIELD

Screen 2: Mine upwards, then SHIELD

Screen 3: Mine (or climb the ladder), get the health if you want, warp (or take the ladder), then SHIELD (or damage boost). Fire dash required at the end.

Screen 4: I hate this room with a passion. Kill the guy (or damage boost), climb, and be very patient.

Screen 5: Don’t get hit, fire dash, grab health at the end

Screen 6: Damage boost or shield

Screen 7: SHIELD, oh yea, also forgot to mention that while in the water, dashing then jumping is the fastest way to move. But DO NOT hold jump as there are many ceiling spikes.

Screen 8: SHIELD

Boss: I’ve tested every weapon against this boss, SHIELD. Possible moves: Move forward then shoot (jump), not-as-threatening-dash (jump if you see it coming), jump then fire downwards (wait until one in front of you hits the ground, then dash, shield works too), and super circle barrage (stand to the opposite side and switch to warp immediately to use it, or dodge the final fireballs. It’s harder to dodge on the left side than the right). When energy is recharging, use normal burst attack. She is also invincible during the super circle barrage.

Fortress Zone 2

Another average stage, but some tricky parts here and there. Starts at 18:05

Screen 1: SHIELD

Screen 2: Self-explanitory

Screen 3: Warp, then SHIELD

Screen 4: Mine, then wait until the platform resets before using warp, mine (or use platforms) to get to health, and be very careful. You can just fire dash over to the ledge. Try to avoid the fire spinners and falling.

Screen 5: You can either SHIELD, or fire dash on the wall and use the I-frames to go through the fire. Shield the guy at the end to get health if you need it.

Screen 6: One of the most annoying rooms in the game. Shield and take your time. Grab the 3 mini healths at the very top.

Screen 7: Take your time, and SHIELD

Boss: Possible moves: Top laser followed by dropping missiles, Top and bottom laser alternation, and open core to shoot energy (only time you can damage it). As far as I know, it is completely random which moves happen, only it can’t use the same move 2 times in a row. This fight can range from short to long. When it opens it’s core, try to aim a warp shot with a mid-jump. If it hits too high or too low, it will just disappear. Also shoot at the core while making sure to dodge the energy circles. That’s about it for this boss.

Fortress Zone 3

Hardest stage in the game. Starts at 21:12

Screen 1: .. prepare fire dash

Screen 2: Boy is this room a pain. But as for my method: I first jump on a platform, then on the fire thing, use the fire dash to I-frames through the spikes, grab the gear, then jump on the next platform. For this particular part, I wait until the platform is at least 1/4th of the way up on the line, then I do a full jump. At the highest point of the jump, use the mines. They should end up at the very edge of the ledge in which you can then jump all the way up to skip 70% of the platforms.

Screen 3: Avoid getting hit by the ceiling fires and use fire dash

Screen 4: Fall down, fire dash left, grab the energy refill and fire dash right, grab health if you need to.

Screen 5: Everybody loves water. SHIELD will do the trick. I guess I should’ve explained this earlier, but the reason you don’t see me use shield often is because energy does not recharge while using it, but it’s fine to use if you aren’t trying to go fast. Anyways, once you are towards the end of the water section, you have to warp to the bomb on the left. Anti gravity is back, but not too bad. There is a gear on the left if you want to get it. After going through the portals, there is another gear to the left. Have fire dash ready before dropping down (probably one of the only unfair parts of the game).

Screen 6: Another gear to the left if you want, drop down, dash under pogo robo.

Screen 7: Return of the insta death lava. After reaching the first safe zone, have fire dash ready for the next gap. Next safe zone, use mines (I still have problems with getting up to that ledge 100% of the time. From what I’ve tested, walking on a mine sends you higher then dash jumping on it, just slightly I think). Prepare fire dash for the last jump.

Screen 8: A cliff. (yea, this is the other unfair part). But yea, fire dash over to the ladder and shield those turrents to avoid getting lasered, then use mines to get up.

Screen 9: Fire dash then mine. As soon as you make it up the ladder, BOOK IT. Well, just don’t panic, one wrong move and you’re incinerated. For the sections afterward, mine up.

Boss: Possible attacks: Missile that shoots fire for some reason (stay in the middle), mini bomb (try to dash towards the right or left), and big bomb (stay in the middle). While warp is the most effective weapon against it, it’s a pretty small window for it to hit to deal damage. Too high, and nothing happens, too low same deal. What I do is full jump, and when I am alligned directly with the nozzle, I fire. With the heal right before the boss, you should be fine.

Fortress Zone 4

Obligatory boss rush time. Starts at 26:30

Since this level is mostly just previous bosses, we’ll skip right to the final boss.

Phase 1: Least favorite and most annoying fight in the game. The ship has guns on both sides that shoot whenever they feel like. If you’re under them and aren’t prepared, you will get hit. It’s other attack is a double flamethrower. Just time a fire dash to go through it. The only way to hurt it is with the explosive ball that it drops which can be shot up with the mine power. The longer this fight goes on, the more likely you are to take too much damage for the 2nd phase. Just try to keep your distance to avoid the gun fire.

Phase 2: I hate to say this, but this is a pretty disappointingly easy final boss. Attacks: Blue lasers (jump), blue laser counterattack (stop attacking when you see this), after he does that, he will always do his dash attack which also makes lasers erupt from the ground. He can hover in the air, shoot, drop a bomb 3/4th’s of the way through, then fire again. He can also fly off screen and charge at you from either direction. He may seem difficult at first, but in order to avoid literally all of his attacks, all you have to do is stand in the middle. All bullets, lasers, and charges are easily avoidable as long as you are paying attention and jump. Most effective weapon: SHIELD

Passive powerups

From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t matter in which order you get the passive powerups as they will always just add upon themselfs instead of being specific upgrades.

#1: Doubles energy recharge speed

#2: Increases normal fire rate (good with shield)

#3: Triples invincibility frames (or just about)

#4: Doubles buster damage
