Comprehensive guide to The Culling (It’s back!)

Overview

Comprehensive guide to The Culling including a list of airdrops, weapons, items, rewards, game mechanics and tips.

Introduction

The Culling is a battle royale style game with 16 players facing off in a fight to the death. The game features two modes free for all and teams, free for all leaves you all by your self while teams gives you a friend to partner up with. Victory is obtained by being the last person or team standing.
In each game you a start in a pseudo-random location, there are a limited amount of spawns on the map and you get assigned one of these at the beginning of the round.

When the round starts you will be released from your container with the objective to collect loot and kill all the other players. As you notice, there is a timer in the top left corner. It starts at 25:00 and counts towards 0:00. The moment it hits the 10:00 mark, the “map closure phase 1” starts. This means that the map gets slowly covered in gas, forcing the player to go towards the Culmination. Phase 1 ends at the 6 minute mark, so the gas stops to push you more in the middle. At this point only the Culmination and the water ring are without gas. At the 4 minute mark the “map closure phase 2” starts, forcing you to go into the culmination. At the end of this phase you are not able to use the ramps outside of the culmination, so if you want to go up there, you take about 10-15 damage, depending on how fast you are. When the Timer hits 1:00, the “Total map closure” starts, filling the complete arena with gas.

The game features a varied arsenel of weapons, perks, airdrops and utility tools to help you reach victory as well as an in game currency called FUNC or Flexible Universal Nano Compound that you can use to craft, open crates, heal or call in airdrops. All this will be covered later in the guide, you can navigate to the information you require using the sidebar.

The game features many mechanics such as blocking, pushing, power attacks, throwing, poison, blindness, cripples, bleeds, weakness, backstabs, snares and gunplay. Mastering these will be your key to success.

How the loot system works

UPDATE: Confirmed with a developer this is how it works!

Based on my own experience from having won almost 50 games now and feedback from many of my friends putting a lot of time in as well there appears to be different tiers of loot rolls depending on where you places, more kills/surviving longer may also improve you odds but cannot be confirmed yet.
There are a few tiers of items:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Very Rare
  • Ultra-rare

Dying early on gives you access to the common and uncommon drop table, dying later on in a better position will open up a chance to get a rare item while coming first gives you access to the ultra-rare table including items like the red mohawk and golden S.W.A.T mask.

How to fight correctly

There are four main aspects to melee combat in this game:

  • Weak hit
  • Charged hit
  • Blocking
  • Pushing

Reading what your opponent does most is how to win fights, if they push a lot use a lot of weak attacks if they block a lot use a lot of pushes and if they weak attack lots block more often.
Walking up and spamming weak attacks is the biggest thing people do wrong in this game this allows you to easily block their attack, while someone is staggered from a block you can get 2 hits on them fairly safe. If the opponent then uses block use a push on them for a free hit (when using a 3* speed weapon you can get an extra hit on them).

When pushed you have two options; block or trade a hit. Often people will try to hit you multiple times after they push you this means you can block out of a push and they will hit into it allowing you 2 free hits as they stagger if they’re smarter than that they wont attack into your block as they will expect you to do it so spam left click and you’ll hit them when coming out of the stagger.

Charging hits is the easiest way to win a fight and will turn a losing fight into a win, run away from the enemy and duck around a corner turn and charge your weapon and hit them with a fully charged hit as they come around this will chunk them for a huge amount of health giving you the edge. Just make sure you don’t allow them to hit your back as you make a run for it.

One other aspect often overlooked is the benefit of bleed effects weapons such as the sabre, katana and cleaver with huge blead stats will do tons of damage in a fight just get a hit on them and back up camping blocks bleads can do around 12 damage over their cycle so just waiting them out will help you win fights by just trading blows one for one.

Thrown weapons, backstabs, bleed, weakness how it all works.

This information was provided by reddit user /u/Bomjus1 and TheHoff. The reddit post can be found

Perk Inconsistencies and Also Bleed & Weakness Explained and a ton of other stuff (SCIENCE!!) from survivetheculling

  • Throwing

Thrown weapons deal the same damage as a fully charged hit (for example a machete does 8-24 so the charged hit will do 24).
Thrown weapons do not deal bonus damage from backstabs even though it plays the backstab audio, although they don’t deal bonus backstab damage they do benefit from the backstab perks. For example if you have the brutus perk to deal bonus backstab damage with knives you will gain 40% bonus damage on a throw backstab (this stacks with golden arm).

Also the bonus bleed duration perks do not apply to thrown weapons.

  • Bleed damage

Wound intensity 1 = 6 damage over 12 seconds.
Wound intensity 2 = 12 damage over 12 seconds.
Wound intensity 3 = 18 damage over 12 seconds.
The bleed damage/duration can vary by 1/2 seconds.

  • Weakness

Wound intensity 1 = 10% reduction in damage.
Wound intensity 2 = 20% reduction in damage.
Wound intensity 3 = 30% reduction in damage.

  • Blowgun

The cripple perk that goes along with the blowgun lasts for 5 seconds
The sickness debuff is not affected by how long you draw back, it always causes the afflicted to vomit twice.

  • Headshots

Headshots with bows simply add 10 damage meaning all bows get the same bonus from scoring a headshot.

General tips

Making a spear or a knife when starting the game is a soild way to open a game but not something I tend to do unless I know someone is around me, a better way to open the game is to look around you for the nearest building and loot it straight away. Take everything you get and sell it to the vendor apart from one weapon (Keep chems if you have chemist). This means you have 15 more FUNC than usual so you are closer to your airdrop.

Whenever you see a green crate make sure to remember where it is there tends to be 3/4 different crate spawns in each location and one will be active in each game this is a free weapon or 20 FUNC from selling what is inside.

When looting your first building if you get a steel snare place them on the front door instead of selling them straight away this will keep you safe if someone comes for you dealing 25 damage and letting you get a free power hit off on them.

If someone has a bow or a blowdart don’t run straight! Strafe towards them and knock that ♥♥♥♥ out of their hands, people far too often just run directly towards me or just side to side make sure you’re unpredictable so they can’t hit you.

Craft snares and place them at the top of the ramp as shown in the pictures below this will make them very hard for someone to see, get them to chase you and run them into the snare once they hit it walk behind them and get a free full charged backstab on them.

If you run into a red crate the easiest way to open them is with a crafted explosive. You can make these by using a stick on a red barrel for 12 FUNC, red crates have a high chance of spawning high level loot.

Some things to think about when fighting against an SMG:
Players using SMGs will usually keep it holstered and keep their melee weapon out, now what they are looking for is for you to be stunned in the fight this means once they block one of your swings they will pull out the SMG and as you are stunned there will be nothing you can do to respond. Therefore meleeing them while possible, is not really recommended. I’m an aggressive player so tend to do it anyway unless I really intend to win the game, the way I do it is by running thick skin (50% damage reduction from guns and bows) I tend to run this every game then use an Orange Juice (which I get from the medic airdrop) running for the 15% damage reduction and have body armour (you can make this by using a backpack or a crafted satchel on a rock) for further tankyness this will allow you to eat up SMG bullets no problem.
Now when in melee with an SMG user you have to make sure you don’t give them an opening do not just swing at them! As soon as they block you and you recoil that gives them the opening to switch to the SMG and mow you down so just keep pushing and hitting once and staying right in their face, keep your eye on their hands often they will get frustrated and just pull the SMG then you can knock it out of their hands and go to town on them! And remember throwing a melee weapon at them will also cause them to drop the SMG.

If you know they have an SMG it really is best to not rush them with melee. There’s a couple of things you can do, set up traps in the area snares will be the best for this, usually they will play aggressive as they want to get close and gun you down so try to get them to walk into your snare for a free charged backstab.
Use bows/blowdarts to keep them at range and chunk their health down. If you get them low enough hit them with sickness then walk up and kill them (Smoke bombs will be great here if you have them).
Another thing is to keep an ear out for how many bullets they’ve used if they’re running low then you have a great opportunity to go for them or wait until they go to a barrel to reload and blow it up while they use it.
Or just lob some dynamite at their feet and GG.

  • Setting changes

Makes sure you don’t set your sensitivity too high, you want to be able to track your opponent and hit every shot finding a balance can take a while as doing 180s is pretty important in this game.

Turning off shadows to improve FPS and visability go to your windows search bar and type %appdata% this will bring up the roaming folder head back into the AppData folder and make sure you have show hidden files on. Then go Local->Victory->Saved->Config->WindowsNoEditor and head into the GameUserSettings.ini and change sg.ShadowQuality= to sg.ShadowQuality=0 to turn off shadows.

Changing your FOV settings. Head into the settings tab in game and go to gameplay the FOV will be there, change this to as high as you feel comfortable playing on I play with 95 this will allow you to see more of the world while playing.

  • Debuffs

Bleed – This ticks the enemy for damage over time.
Weakness – Lowers the damage output of the enemy struck with it.
Cripple – Impairs movement of the afflicted player.
Snare – Unable to move until interaction is finished or take damage.

List of airdrops

How to get airdrops
You can change your ingame airdrop by going to the “loadout” tab on the home screen then clicking the airdrop tab. You begin the game with four airdrops “Tough”, “Archer”, “Stalker” and one called “Surprise me!” one of the best ways to get new airdrops is to use the Surprise me airdrop this will allow you to get a random airdrop each game. Once you have opened an airdrop in game it will be available to use in the airdrop tab.
You can also open other players personal airdrops that they call in to have them added to your airdrop tab.
As well there are four ingame events that allow you to get new airdrops:
“Loot Pinata” places two flying crates in the centre arena both of these crates have loot in them so shoot them down and claim them for yourself.
“Grab my package” this sends a crate to a random location on the map the airdrop is slow moving so keep your eye on the sky to find it.
“Loot express” places a package in a defined area, the announcer will declare a location where the package will spawn in 2 minutes, the package tends to appear on the roof and always has loot so learn the map to find these easliy.
“Three crate Monte” places 3 crates in the centre arena 2 of these crates will explode causing minor damage a small bleed and a cripple.

By the way FUNC stands for Flexible Universal Nano Compound.

Best ways to use airdrops

The core perk that every class will be taking is Leg Day and 90% of the time one of the others will be thick skin, this is to stop you from instantly loosing the game at the end to someone pulling an SMG.

  • Medic

The power of this build is the early game; you become a monster with orange juice and body armour early in the game you can kill everyone off before they’ve had time to farm up big items.

Use this with the Chemist perk, when you land make sure you search the nearest building grab everything you can and sell it keeping one weapon and a man tracker if you find it, if you come accross a stamina just use it for 6 minutes of infinite sprint. Now if you have enough call in your airdrop make sure you use a bow to shoot it down or throw sticks/rocks at it, take your backpack collect your orange juice and med kit. Now at this point in the game with an orange juice you’re stronger than everyone else so just use your man tracker to hunt people down and take their loot.
Remember you can turn extra backpacks into armour.

This shows the power of the orange juice:

  • S.W.A.T/Bandito

You have a few options with perks here you want Leg Day for sure, your other options include Recovery for the extra stamina allowing you to run around easier this is great as you want to be able to avoid combat until you have your SMG, load dropper you’re going to be voulnerable while your airdrop is coming in as your will have less gear due to selling it all for your airdop so having this can save your life, thick skin if someone else has a gun this will make your win the fight with ease or Ol’ Painless just to gun people down even faster.
This is what you want to be running if you are trying to win every game.
The power of the SMG lies in the close up fighting, the best way to use it is to block with a melee weapon and as hit you and recoil draw your SMG and mow them down this will result in their immediate death with very little counter play.
At the start of the game you want to run into the nearest building and collect everything up, sell everything expect one melee weapon don’t waste time crafting you just want to get your SMG as fast as possible, the best place to be is on the outskirts of the map so you can get your package quietly.

  • Hunter/Sniper

Here I would run Leg day and Recovery along with a third perk of your choice good perks would be stealthy to allow your to remain undetected or load dropper to save time getting your airdrop.
The strong part about the rifle is the ability to one hit someone if you hit them in the head, repeat most of the steps from the above hiding and farming up ammunition.
Some things you can combo with the sniper are snares and blowguns crafted snares hold anyone who walks into them stationary until they are shot for hold “F” for a certain amount of time to escape from the trap this allows you to get a 100% headshot on them. Another tactic is to hit them with a blowgun and keep them at range once you understand how the blowgun works you will know when they are going to vomit, use the time they are held in place by vomit to switch to your rifle and gun them down.

  • Lumberjack

Leg day and chemist are musts here, the stamina drain on the chainsaw is insane so having a stamina chem running is necessary. Now that it doesn’t stun lock it’s weaker as well and people can hit you back while you kill them so will take some damage.
The main thing you want to get is X-plosive runs or orange juice chems (muscle milk is great as well) these two make it so people can’t kite you around as you’re so much faster than them.
