Controller Setup for Driving (XBOX or any other) for The Long Drive

Controller Setup for Driving (XBOX or any other)

Overview

The game has wheel support but no official controller support yet. Use this guide to set up your controller to play this game like most driving games.

Steering/Throttle/Brake

1. Plug in your controller before starting the game. Don’t bother with the launcher options with the controller axis setup, just start the game.
2. Go into “settings” then “steering wheel” setup screen.
3. Enable your steering axis by ticking the red box.
Click the “Assign” button, and push the Left stick horizontally either left or right to set up steering.
4. For throttle axis you can use the right trigger. Enable it. Click “Assign” and press RT when prompted.
Now this is the important step! You need to set the deadzone to “1,00” !
(When you release the trigger you should not see the grey line filling up, because in that case the game will automatically push the gas for you. As you gradually press down the trigger you are going to see the line filling up from zero to max, meaning it’s working correctly.)
5. For the Brake axis do the same thing with the left trigger. Assign LT to the break axis and set the deadzone to 1,00 again.
See the screenshot below:

Boom, now you can almost play the game like GTA.
Just make sure this works, then you can go on with the next steps if you want to.

Custom button settings in the launcher

The launcher gives you a lot of options to set up. As you can see there are separate entries for the same actions like:

button_handbrake
axis_handbrake

button_throttle
axis_throttle

etc

You can set up the axes within the game as shown in the previous section.
But for adding controller buttons, use the launcher.
All of these options can have 2 buttons assigned to them. (Primary/Secondary) Double click the entry to change them.
For example here I set up X on my controller to use for handbrake, as I dont want to deal with the handbrake axis, but I still keep my handbrake setup on the keyboard.

Some things you might want to set buttons for:

button_handbrake
horn
ignition

CameraB – change camera
LightsB – cycle headlight modes
Cancel – to bring up the menu

For manual transmission:
button_clutch
upshift
downshift

Keylook – to look around with the right stick (see below)
resetlean – to center your camera (see below)

Looking around with the right stick

Keylook is a function which you can use to have the direction keys or joystick axis to look around.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work without pressing the button, so it’s something that isn’t like in other games.

1. Go into the launcher options, give a gamepad button to Keylook

2. Here I set up my right stick as Horizontal and Vertical:

(Double click and press your right stick horizontally and vertically for each option.)

You can now look around using the right stick while the button is pressed.

You can use resetlean, (TAB by default) to reset your camera position. Assign this to a button if you want to.

Tips and tricks

  • if steering is too twitchy for you, decrease the sensitivity a bit. If it’s drifting left or right, increase the deadzone.
  • It’s a good idea to put throttle to a button as well because your finger might go tired pushing on the right trigger all the time.
  • If you want to turn off controller support: Go into the steering wheel screen and untick the red boxes for steering, throttle and brake.
