Overview
This is a linear area-by-area guide for the major NPC questlines in Dark Souls
NPC Questlines in Order
Note(s):
● If you’re not familiar with the Souls games, when I state “speak” with an NPC. This means exhausting their dialogue, to ‘exhaust’ dialogue you need to cycle through all of their dialogue until they repeat the first sentence over again. They will not move from their location if the dialogue has not been concluded.
● This NPC-quest guide has been altered to how I play through Dark Souls 1. There are many different alterations or paths that one can choose when playing through this game. So if you see an area or direction that’s askew to how you would progress, that’s because this is how I do it.
Let’s get started!
UNDEAD ASYLUM: Nothing.
FIRELINK SHRINE:
Speak with Crestfallen Warrior.
Speak with Petrus, join his covenant and exhaust his dialogue.
UNDEAD BURG:
Purchase the Residence Key from the Undead Merchant.
UNDEAD BURG – BRIDGE:
Speak with Solaire of Astora.
UNDEAD PARISH:
You can speak with Seigmeyer sitting next to the closed gate of Sen’s Fortress. (This has no influence on his actions later on.)
Free Lautric of Carim from his cell on the 2nd floor of the Old Church.
*Be careful about picking up a three Firekeeper Souls with him alive, as he kills the Firekeeper.
DEPTHS:
Free Sorcerer Griggs in Lower Undead Burg with the Residence Key, he’ll return to Firelink Shrine.
Speak with Griggs at Firelink Shrine. (Optional, you can still find Logan in Sen’s Fortress regardless.)
Free Laurentius of the Great Swamp from a barrel in the upper region of the Depths. Exhaust his dialogue.
After Capra Demon is dead, Rhea of Thorolund will appear at Firelink Shrine.
If you speak to Petrus his group will depart for the Catacombs, they can also automatically depart after the death of Pinwheel.
BLIGHTTOWN:
If you have a +10 Pyromancy Flame, Quelana of Izalith will appear in the swamp sitting against a nearby pillar and sell you advanced pyromancies. She also has a small quest line that can be advanced later on. Purchase all of her pyromancies.
FIRELINK SHRINE (2):
Speak with Crestfallen Knight on your return after ringing the Second Bell.
Laurentius is at Firelink — exhaust his dialogue. He will ask about the pyromancies you obtained from Quelana and head for Blighttown. He will turn hollow there.
LAURENTIUS’ QUEST LINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
The Firekeeper is now dead, obtain the Blackeye Orb from her corpse at Firelink Shrine.
(The Firekeeper is killed by Lautrec after the second bell has been rung, or if you obtain a third Firekeeper Soul before the second bell.)
SEN’S FORTRESS:
Rotate the boulder mechanism lever and speak with Siegmeyer below the dirt ramp.
Rotate the boulder mechanism lever and break the wall at the bottom of the long downward ramp; use the Master Key (if you have it) to free Big Hat from his cage from beyond that broken wall. Note: You can find the actual key for Big Hat’s cage by jumping across the gap on the narrow bridge, follow the tower to the bottom, and you’ll find it on a corpse across a small bridge.
ANOR LONDO:
Inside the Castle, rescue Siegmeyer of Catalina from the Silver Knights. (You can find him by ascending to the roof, and proceed into the opposite entrance on the same roof.)
Speak with Solaire of Astora. Exhaust his dialogue.
Use the Blackeye Orb in the Main Hall of Anor Londo castle to invade and kill Lautrec.
Do not use any Firekeeper Soul until you’ve return the Firekeeper’s Soul!
LAUTREC’S QUESTLINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
CATACOMBS: Nothing
TOMB OF THE FALLEN GIANTS:
Say “No” to Patches, let him kick you off the cliff, then forgive him for it.
Note: If you choose not to forgive him he’ll give you a Twin Humanity.
Rescue Rhea of Thorolund from her entourage which have recently turned hollow. They can all be found in the dark recesses that Patches’ kicks you into.
Return to Firelink and kill Petrus, if you don’t he will kill Rhea and the questline will end.
(The entire purpose of Petrus’ character is that he’s not faithful at all, rather a lying murderer.)
Speak with Rhea of Thorolund in the Old Church of Undead Parish.
FIRELINK SHRINE (3):
You can now purchase goodies from Patches in Firelink Shrine.
PATCHES’ (SMALL) QUESTLINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
Exhaust Siegmeyer’s dialogue.
Siegmeyer now needs your help in Lower Blighttown, he needs Poison Moss. You can purchase this from the female Undead Merchant. You can find Siegmeyer at the far end of Blighttown surrounded by giant leeches. He’s poisoned, if you do not give him poison moss his quest line will end here.
Speak with the Quelana of Izalith (pyromancy merchant) you may have spoken with earlier, if you do, she’ll ask you to free her mother and sisters by defeating the Bed of Chaos.
NEW LONDO:
Crestfallen has been Hollow after the ringing of the second bell, he’ll attack you at the beginning of New Londo.
LOST IZALITH:
After summoning for the Centipede Demon, Solaire is now infected with a mind-rotting parasite.
Solaire will become stuck in a dark encampment behind a wall mechanism, to free him you’ll need to spend a total of 30 Humanity to the Chaos Servant covenant.
or
If you proceed into Lost Izalith and defeat Bed of Chaos; Solaire will become hollow, and you’ll be forced to kill him.
SOLAIRE’S QUESTLINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
Siegmeyer is found in the hidden lower collapsible room attempting to take on a herd of poisonous enemies; if you manage to kill all the enemies and Siegmeyer has over half-health his quest line will continue, but if his health drops down to below half he’ll gift you a Speckled Stone Ring, then wearily succumb to his wounds.
Once Bed of Chaos is defeated, return to Quelana of Izalith whom you spoke with earlier. She will reward you with an advanced pyromancy.
QUELANA’S QUEST LINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
THE GRAND ARCHIVES:
If you killed Petrus earlier and Rhea lives, she’ll be dead within the holding cells of the Archives.
PETRUS/RHEA’S QUEST LINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
Siegmeyer’s daughter is seeking him in the Crystal Golum Garden, you need to free her from her trapped state inside a gold-colored Crystal Golum.
Big Hat Logan:
- Is being held at the bottom of the Archive Tower Cell. You’ll need the Archive Tower Giant Key, which is found in a chest within the collapsible staircase room on the bottom level of the main
building just before the room with the Crystal Golem Garden.
- After you’ve rescued him he’ll be found behind the bookcase in the room leading to the Golem
Garden.
- You need to purchase all of his spells and exhaust his dialogue.
- Once you’ve defeated Seathe exhaust his dialogue.
- Big Hat is now completely hollow and maddened, found in the room where you original encountered Seathe in his invincible form. You can kill him to obtain his armor and the White Dragon Breath sorcery.
BIG HAT LOGAN’S QUEST LINE IS NOW COMPLETE.
FIRELINK SHRINE (4):
Sieglinde of Catarina is in Firelink Shrine inquiring about her father, answer her questions and she’ll move on.
ASH LAKE:
(You can reach Ash Lake by proceeding to lower Blighttown, and on the eastern-side you’ll find a large tree entrance that leads into the Great Hollow, this will in-turn lead to Ashen Lake at the bottom.)
Sieglinde of Catarina has found her father in a hollowed state, and ended his suffering. She’ll thank you for your services and reward you with a Titanite Slab.

Conclusion
I hope this aided you in your pilgrimage, chosen undead!
I’ve written multiple un-posted guides on my tenure of obtaining 12 FromSoft 100% completions thus far, 6 of which are Dark Souls platinum trophies on PS3/PS4. After much consideration I’ve begun compiling my knowledge into a series of Dark Souls guides.
It’s somewhat tasking attempting to accumulate this information into an simplistic, easy-to-understand guide — but I try. 😉
