Detailed guide : How to use MODs

Overview

A quick detailed guide that shows how to use MODS on Risk of Rain 2

Intro

Hello,

I just wanted to make it easy for beginners who wants to try mods, because even for someone who can do a little bit of research (like me), it took me a while to figure it out.

Steps to make the game Modable

  • Download BepInExPack from this link : [link] (Use manual download)
  • Copy what’s in BepInExPack folder to your Risk of Rain 2 folder (..steamappscommonRisk of Rain 2)
You can find the ROR2 folder by locating the files from your library.
  • Download R2API from this link : [link]
  • Extract monomod and plugins to BepInEx folder (…steamappscommonRisk of Rain 2BepInEx)
(You shouldn’t be asked to replace them because those folders were empty and after replacing them they contain some files)

Here is a short video that shows the steps : {LINK REMOVED}https://share.wildbook.me/IM9BpXdSJC8NroJH.mp4
(From the discord of the guys behind thunderstore.io)

That’s all what you need to be able to use MODS.

Installing a MOD

MODS can be found here [link] (I’m not sure if there are other similare website but this is the most known)

Each mod comes with instructions, but basically you just create a folder representing each pluging (unless it’s sais otherwise on the plugin instructions) and copy all the files in that folder. The folder must be created in steamappscommonRisk of Rain 2BepInExplugins

When you start Risk of Rain 2, a console/command prompt should appear. If there is a red wall of text, then something is wrong.

Also make sure you installed every requirement (all mods require R2API and BepInEx).
Below an example of a mod that requires an other MOD called HJUpdater API. For more info about HJ Updater check the Updates section.

Updating

  • To update BepInEx / R2API you just have to replace the files with the updated ones (by doing the same steps in Steps to make the game Modable).

Note that only R2AP is updated very often. You can check when was the last update on thunderstore.io

As I’m writing this, it was updated again after just 2 days. So whenever a MOD doesn’t work, check if you need to update something.

  • To update MODS, it’s the same. You just download the MOD again (updated version) and replace the files.

Some MODS require HJUpdater API. This API is installed like any other MOD and it takes care of updating. In this case you have to update HJUpdater API in the same way.

Managing MODS

If you think you’ll have way too many mods, or just want to use a GUI to manage them, you should check ROR2 MOD Manager : [link]

This will allow you to use the Install with MOD Manager button directly from thunderstore.io

Uninstalling / Deactivating Mods

  • Deactivating MODS(without deleting)

To deactivate mods, you just have to rename the doorstop_config.ini (steamappscommonRisk of Rain 2).
When I did rename the file I just changed it to doorstop_config.ini.xxx to make sure it’s not an .ini file anymore.

You can switch back whenever you want.

  • Deleting Mods

To delete MODS, we just delete every file that we added.
PS. Since the files don’t take too much space, I recommend to just rename doorstop_config.ini

If you still want to delete all, just make sure you don’t delete something else beside the files that we put at the start.

The simple answer is here.
This means we will need to delete :

– BepInEx folder
– doorstop_config.ini
– winhttp.dll

If you delete any other file that is required to make the game work, you’ll have to check the files integrity so they can be downloaded again or you have to download the whole game.

Run modded and unmodded game with shortcuts

To make it simple, in order to run MODS, a file is needed. If this file is deleted we can add arguments in the game shortcut to replace the instructions on the file.

That’s basically what is shown in this 2 minutes guide : [link]

If you have done everything correctly, you should now have two versions of Risk of Rain 2 in your library: the original one and the shortcut that enables BepInEx (and all the mods).

Playing with friends

I didn’t try yet to play with friends but here is what is said on the FAQ :

“…all you need is an ID spoofing mod like this one [link] or [link]

If someone doesn’t want to install mods for some reason. For the best results everyone in your lobby should also have the same mods as you to remove some lag/desync issues that may occur.”

What Hopoo games think about modding ?

According to the FAQ :

They’ve made an official statement. And they have been hard at work helping the modding community in various ways.
