Overview
This is a guide that I’ve created on Wilson (More to come). Throughout this series of guides, I will show you what you can do to be the best Wilson player out there (aside from a few)
Getting started.
SO
You have just got Don’t Starve. Congratulaion, you have made a great purchase. If you have recieved the game by other means, still, good purchase. Now fisrt you will notice 4 save slots (5 with RoG). Here you can create a world. Pick one. When you click on one, you will see Wilson’s character portrait. Along with the following options: ‘Character’, ‘World’ and ‘Exit’. Unless you have other characters, you can only play as Wilson. The ‘World’ option allows the change the settings (To make the game easiser or harder for yourself). I personally prefer the ‘Default’ setting, but to each their own.
Anyway, once the world has finished loading, you will be greeted by a guy in a suit (No, not Slenderman) but Maxwell, the main bad guy of the game and the guy who sent you to this world. (As seen in ‘Forbidden Knowledge’)
One of the DEFINITE things about spawing is that you will spawn in a grassland biome. Hopefully near trees, flint, twigs, grass, carrots, berries and rabbits. Gather the following: Flint, grass, twigs, food, and wood (not necissarily in that order).
The items spawn from the following:
Twigs: Sapling
Grass: Grass tufts
Flint: On the ground
Berries: Berry bushes (may spawn Gobblers that eat berries)
Carrots: In the ground
Logs: Trees when cut down.
Note: Evergreens and Birchnut trees(Birchnuts are RoG only) will drop up to 2 pinecones or Birchnuts. Both can be replanted, but Birchnuts will spoil.
Tip: In a pinch, Birchnuts can be used as a temporary food source (restoring 9 hunger) and pinecones can be used as fuel. This is exceptionally useful towards winter when both may become scarce, as Birchnuts will only have leaves in Summer, Spring and Autumn, so stock up on them in Autumn because this is the only time they drop 2 Birchnuts.
Downsides: If you don’t replant them, Poison Birchnuts and Treeguards will spawn, they can be kept this way for Living logs from both, but this is NOT advised unless there are Pigs in the area (Build Pig houses) and befriend them with any meats (yes, even monster meat). However, pig skin is difficult to obtain, and can be a risky item to obtain. So I reccomend making at least a log suit and spear, along with kiting (striking when they can’t) to take down the treeguard, and to replant Birchnuts to get rid of Poison Birchnuts.
Wilson’s Magnificent Beard.
Exactly as it sounds.
The beard is one of Wilson’s true advantages over other characters (See perks section). This is because Meat Effigies require Beard hair, which is their rare ingredient (Also in perks section). Wilson is mainly there for highly efficient Winter survival, providing an insulation factor 135 alone, which slows freezing in Winter, but increases overheating in summer (RoG). In fact, Wilson can achieve the highest insulation level of any character. With a maxed out Thermal Stone (Orange), Beefalo Hat (240 insulation points) and a Puffy Vest, he can achieve an insulation factor of 735. To get a Beefalo hat, one must kill at least 3 Beefalo for Beefalo wool, 4 meat and a Beefalo horn (1 in 3 chance of dropping). The Beefalo Hat requires 8 Beefalo wool and a Beefalo horn to make, along with a Science Machine to prototype (you should hvae one by day 21 if you last that long). The puffy vest is only possible during winter, it requires a Winter Koalefant Trunk (You can find one by investingating dirt piles), 8 silk (Better start killin’ spiders) and 2 Beefalo wool to make, along with an alchemy Engine to prototype (hopefully you have one).
Wilson’s beard takes 15 days to grow, starting on day 5 and ending on day 21. In normal Don’t Starve, Winter starts on day 21 so it’s good to let it grow. However, if you are playing RoG and start in Spring, Summer starts on day 21 if that happens, so shave every 5 days as the beard provides no benefits in Summer.
The Beard can be carried between worlds if you are palying Adventure mode, good for King of Winter and The Game Is Afoot if they are yet to be encountered. (SPOILERS!)
Example of Wilson’s full grown beard (Dec. 16th 2014)
FACT: Since RoG was released, with the implementation of Webber (Who I will make a guide on) Wilson is not the only character who can grow a beard, And since the ‘Inasnity!’ update (Which introduced Wes) he is not the only character who can make Meat Effigies because since then, rabbits will become ‘Beardlings’ if sanity is 40% of Maximum.
Perks, Meat Effigy construction and Sanity management.
There are a fair few perks as Wilson, since he has no drawbacks and can easily make Meat Effigies which need beard hair. The only actual drawback is that if Wilson dies with a beard, it does not carry on between lives (without mods of course).
Meat Effigies:
Recipie: 4 boards, 4 cooked meat and 4 beard hair
Needs: Prestihatitator to prototype
Description: Ressurect yourself via the power of meat!
Of all characters, Wilson is the best at making these since he is a walking source of Beard Hair (good for prolonging survival and amount of deaths). Meat Effigies are good for those who have access to the required resources. It is highly reccomended to only make 1 Meat Effigy at a time because when built, you lose 30 base HP, but get it back when you revie from the Effigy. However, if you need beard hair and don’t have a beard, going insane is a semi-good alternative for beardlings.
Anyway, this is not always a good idea, because terrorbeaks and Crawling Horrors will become aggressive towards you and are difficult to fight, so be prepared! If you are playing RoG, it’s good to look for Glommer’s Statue on a full moon to get Glommer’s flower and summon Glommer (who provides a 6 and 1/4 SPM aura (Sanity Per Minute) when you have the flower). Which can be stacked with the T’o’S (Tam’o’Shanter) which has a 25% drop rate from MacTusk in winter to provide a 12 and 9/10 SPM aura (This is even better if you have the Dapper vest, which provides 3.3 SPM, totalling at 16 1/5 SPM). This can be used as a quick way to practically stop sanity loss in winter (which you will lose). Also, it’s best to carry at least 2 sewing kits to repair the clothing items (Don’t wear them at all times, save them for daytime for best results). If you have Chester, despite being irrelevant, it’s good to keep the sewing kits and quite possibly, the sanity restoring items in him, futher encouraged by Shadow Chester’s extra storage slots. The only drawbacks here are that the cloting items lose durability overtime, and Glommer can die, which can lead to major problems since Sewing kits also lose 20% durability a use, which is annoying -_-.
Anyway, being the best character for Meat Effigies, it is strongly advised the kill 2 pigs (A Rugby or ‘Football’ Helmet and 6 standard Blow darts are best for this, but a Log suit works fine in place of the Hemlet) for meat and Pig skin if you need it for say.. the Ham Bat (take your pick, an extra life or weaponised food). But still, this is a personally preffered strategy. However, Blowdarts need 2 reeds, 1 hound tooth and an Azure feather for just 1. And since Blow Darts are not reusable (why?) this can be a difficult process. If you cannot get the blowdarts, a spear (or Tentacle Spike) and the previously mentioned armour will do.
Basic Winter Survival
As previously mentioned, Wilson is the overall best Character for Winter. However, if one cannot obtain the required items for perfect survival, the following will be OK:
Rabbit Earmuffs
Requires: 2 rabbits, 1 twig
Needs: Science machine to prototype
Breezy Vest:
Requires: Normal Koalefant Trunk, 8 silk
Needs: Alchemy Engine to prototype
Thermal Stone:
Requires: Any durability normal Pickaxe (2 flint & 2 twigs), 10 rocks and 3 flint
Needs: Alchemy Engine to prototype.
Tip: Can be put in Ice box or near Endothermic Fire pit to prevent overheating in summer in the RoG DLC.
” Even more science-y than the last one! ”
–Wilson
This isn’t perfect, but should help. I also recommend taking a sewing kit or 2 with this set of items as well (make sure to grow that beard!) So, that’s all I can give for you information wise on this section, look at the others for more advice.
MAGIC!
Almost finished! Now, If I know anything about magic in Don’t Starve (which is a fair bit). It’s that there are 2 stations for using it. Both of which are very useful on any world, despite being mildly difficult to obtain. Well, I say that and I mean that the Shadow Manipulator is fairly hard to make.
Tier 1: Prestihatitator (1x Top Hat, 4x Boards and 4X Rabbits and a Science machine to prototype)
Allows you to make:
Pan Flute
Meat Effigy
Ice Staff
Nightmare Fuel (Refine tab)
Purple Gem (Refine tab)
One-Man Band
Night Light (-3 SPM, +7 SPM w/ Willow only)
Shadow Manipulator
Tier 2: Shadow Manipulator (3 Living Logs, 1 Purple Gem, 7 Nightmare Fuel)
Allows you to make:
All of the above in the Prestihatitator section
Fire Staff
Dark Sword
Night Armour
Bat Bat
Belf of Hunger
Telelocator Staff
Telelocator Focus
Nightmare Amulet
End
Well, you’ve got to the end of this guide. I hope it was helpful and let me know what you thought of it in the comments. I am OK with constructive criticsm on how to make guides better, but hateful and/or offensive comments will be removed. Anyway, feel free to ask em to add to this if there’s anything I missed you know about. And thanks for reading. =)
