Don’t Starve: Ludiwhopper’s Virtual “Early Survival” Handbook

Overview

This guide will show you, in my opinion, what to do in your new Don’t Starve world. I will list steps on how to get ready for your first winter, where to set up your base and what items to aquire. This guide is not on how to show you how to survive like a pro, it is just a list of my opinions on what is most important to survive and what has proved most mandatory to me while playing Don’t Starve.

What to Gather

You spawn in your world, hopefully in grasslands with flowers and trees and saplings, carrots, berry bushes, grass, and all that good stuff. You should immediately hoard all the berries, seeds, saplings (sticks), grass, and flint in sight. Once you find some flint, create an axe, and chop down a couple of huge pine trees, planting the pinecones afterward. If you see mushrooms, gather them, but don’t eat them. Don’t worry about rocks yet, but if you see some rocks laying on the ground in item form, feel free to grab them. Get some carrots too, they’re a good snack in your first week when cooked. You might feel like you should make a garland, but don’t just pick up all the flowers. I recommend not getting the flowers, ’cause you might be hurrying down through the same grassland biome one day, getting chased by shadow monsters, and there wouldn’t be any flowers there to save you from insanity. In the next couple of days, you might want to hoard grass, sticks, seeds, carrots, logs, mushrooms, rocks, and flint.

Where to Stay (And Stay Near)

Where should you set up base? Well, you should set up your base in/near a grasslands biome, possibly with a forest nearby, so you can get carrots, wood, seeds, grass, sticks, and berries. Also, you might want to be near a savanna, so you can get Beefalo manure, rabbits, grass, and have a place to not get killed by Wargs. A Pigman village might be nice, so you can get a little hunchpacked porcine minion to help cut down trees or whatever, and also get manure, sanity boosts, and possibly gold nuggets. One of those rock biome places would be good for, well, rocks, and Tallbird eggs. Swamps: I don’t think there’s much to get from there, except for tentacle spikes, so you don’t really have to be near there. If youre near the Ocean, then I don’t really know the Pros and Cons of staying there, except for Pengulls.
