Sid Meier’s Civilization® V Guide

Downloading and Installing Mods on PC for Sid Meier's Civilization V

Downloading and Installing Mods on PC

Overview

A brief guide to downloading and using mods on Windows using Steam Workshop. This guide has been updated since the video version.

Overview

This guide will show how to subscribe, download, and install mods using Steam Workshop. It is more up-to-date than the video to the right, although the video shows the same basic steps.

For Mac or manual mod installation, see the other guides (in progress).

Accessing The Mod Menu

First, launch the game. After the intro and loading screen, you will reach the main menu. From there, click on “Mods”.

You will have to agree to the terms every time you enter this menu.

The next screen will list all mods you have installed, if any. To browse the workshop, click “Get Mods”. You will need to be online to do this.

Using The Workshop

The Steam Workshop hosts the mods for Civilization V. You can find the most recent and popular mods on the main workshop page. You can also browse and search for mods.

Clicking on a mod’s picture or name will bring you to an information page. On here, there is a green button labeled “Subscribe”. Clicking this will automatically download the mod.

Back in the Steam Client, you will notice it is downloading a new item. Regardless of how many mods you download, this will always be listed as one item.

The downloaded item is “Workshop Content”, which means mods. If you have mods installed, you may notice Steam updating some of them automatically once they are subscribed.

Activating and Using Mods

Next to every mod is a checkbox. Clicking on that box will turn it green. Any mod that is checked will be activated.

Do not hit back. To activate the mods, you must hit the large NEXT button on the bottom right.

The next screen will only have one option: single player. It will list all active mods. You can have as many mods active as you want, as long as they do not conflict with each other.

This is the single player mod menu. From here, you can set up the game however you want. All of the modifications will be available from this point.

Deactivating Mods

To deactivate mods, simply return to the main menu. Any game started outside of the mod menu will be unmodded.

Additional Information

This guide only covers usage of Steam Workshop. I plan to write a guide for Mac and for manual installation as well.

There may currently be a bug with Steam causing mods to disappear. I do not have information on this and it is not happening to me personally, so I can’t help with that.

When using mods, achievements are disabled, with the exception of the three mod achievements. Of those achievements, one of them is broken.

I will gladly append this guide with new information.
