Advice
Weapons: Swords, Greatswords
Unique: Luminary
Any Advice?
❧ Being the main character, the Hero is the only one with access to the Zap family of spells.
❧ It’s a very good idea to grab Zap as soon as possible, but you’ll probably want to wait a while before delving further into the Luminary category–there will be a point in the game where you lose access to the Luminary skills, and you’ll have to reset your skill points to one of the weapon categories instead.
❧ Additionally, while you can pick either weapon to specialize in, the Hero’s signature weapon is a Sword, so it may be best to grab the skill panels for that category over Greatswords.
❧ Best early unlocks if you go for a sword are Falcon Slash (Swords 16P) Quickly attack twice for double damage & Miracle Slash (Swords 16P) Deals damage while slightly healing MC.
Best Skills?
❧ Gigaslash/Gigasmash – These moves can be bought a bit later in the game, and they’re at the top of the swords/greatswords section respectively. Gigaslash lets you hit all enemies with a lightning blade, while Gigasmash pounds a group of enemies with lighting. Each move is incredibly powerful, and Gigaslash especially can be super useful when going up against multiple enemy types in a battle.
❧ Helichopter – If you go the way of the greatsword, this should be one of the very first skills you get, as it’ll let you hit a group of enemies for moderate damage. Hitting groups can be very important early on.
❧ Miracle Slash (Swords 16P) – If you go with a sword and shield this move can be helpful for the hero. It hits the enemy for moderate damage, and also restores his health, making it a good way to supplement your party’s healer.
❧ Zap – There are three different Zap skills you can get as you progress through the game, and they’re by far the most powerful spells the hero has access to. Zap can be especially helpful early on as it hits a group of enemies and can cause big damage to metal or aquatic foes.
Appearance
Erik
❧ He is a thief who becomes a companion to the hero early in the story after abandoning a life of crime.
❧ His weapons of choice consist of knives, one-handed swords, and boomerangs, and he is even capable of dual wielding weapons
Personality
❧ Erik is a young blue-haired thief which carries a scabbard with a dagger on his sash
❧ Despite his gruff exterior, he has a kind and compassionate heart.
❧ He is a seasoned traveler and guides the hero along with his journey.
Story
Erik first encounters the hero in the prisons of Heliodor Castle.

Advice
Weapons: Swords, Daggers, Boomerangs
Unique: Guile
Any Advice?
❧ Erik is the thief of the group, and his Guile skills allow him to gain skills like Half-Inch (steal items from enemies), Divide (make two copies for one turn, offering 3 attacks) and Critical Claim (guaranteed critical on any enemy).
❧ Erik has low defense which affects his survivability in later points of the game, so it’s very important to grab his agility stat skill panels so he’s more likely to dodge blows.
❧Best early unlocks are Poison Strike (Knives 7P) Attack and possibly poison enemy, Half-Inch (Guile 8P) Steals item from enemy (no damage), Dual-Wielding (Knives 16P) Equip knives in both hands, increasing damage and lowering defense
❧ In terms of weapons, Erik is the only character that can wield boomerangs, which can attack all enemies at once. His Dual-Wield ability is within the Daggers category, though, and since Erik can’t equip a Shield it might be best to work towards it regardless of what weapon you choose.
Best Skills?
❧ Dual-Wield – A few different characters can get the dual-wield skill, but it’s particularly valuable for Erik due to his proficiency with knives. Dual-wielding can bump up his damage, and give you a second chance to inflict a status like poison on an enemy with a skill like Cobra Strike. It’s also especially useful with his other moves we’ll go over. It’s found at the bottom of the Knives section.
❧ Cobra Strike and Victimiser – Erik is great at chipping away on enemies with statuses. His spells cause damage to the enemy every turn, and you can add onto that damage by using Cobra Strike. Dual-wielding bumps up the chance of poisoning. After that invest in Victimiser, as it allows Erik to do five times damage to any poisoned enemy. Both are found quickly on the Knives section.
❧ Divide – Divide makes Erik one of the best damage dealers in the entire game, as he creates two doubles that add two more attacks to his next move, four if you have dual-wield. Setting up an enemy with poison and then victimizer means one blow can do ridiculous damage, but keep in mind Divide only applies for the next turn. It’s the middle tile in his Guile category.
Veronica
❧ Veronica is a young girl which carries a very tall wand topped with a red orb that is much taller than her
❧ Serena’s twin sister
Personality

Advice
Weapons: Heavy Wands, Whips
Unique: Vim
Any Advice?
❧ Veronica is the battlemage of the group, and her purpose is to sling fireballs across the field.
❧ Best early unlocks are Fire and Earth Resistance +20 percent (Vim 10P) Increase Veronica’s elemental defense & Ice and Wind Resistance +20 percent (Vim 10P) Increase Veronica’s elemental defense.
❧ Her unique skill set, Vim, helps in that goal, with panels that up her Magical Might, as well as hiding some of her most powerful spells. Like Serena, while you can give Veronica a weapon that ups her physical capabilities, it’s probably best to keep her with the Heavy Wands, which offer additional boosts to Magical Might
Best Skills?
❧ Spooky Aura – Veronica is entirely focused on causing big damage with magic, and most of her skills play into that. Spooky Aura lowers an enemy’s resistance to all offensive spells and generally has a better chance to work than the actual spell that has the same effect.
❧ Channel Anger – Tying into Spooky Aura, Channel Anger significantly increases the damage Veronica can do with offensive spells. The two skills combined together can make for a deadly combination, especially against bosses. Both skills are in the Vim section.
❧ Antimagic – While bosses with magic are generally easier to take down with physical attacks, Antimagic can go a long way to help as it seals the enemy’s ability to use magic. It’s not guaranteed to work, but if your party is getting ravaged by spells it can be a critical help. Antimagic is on the Heavy wands category.
❧ Zing Stick – Yggdrasil Leaves, the items that revive dead party members, are exceedingly rare to come by in Dragon Quest XI. Because of that, you’ll want as many characters as possible with a revive ability, and at the top of Veronica’s Heavy Wands section is Zing Stick which is guaranteed to revive a fallen party member.
Serena
❧ Serena is a dependable healer, capable of using recovery magic, and is seen playing a small lyre
❧ Veronica’s twin sister
❧ She is seen playing the lyre in the game’s opening movie
Personality
❧ Serena is a neat and tidy beauty.
❧ Although she is calm, laid-back, and compassionate, Serena is also slightly hapless and causes worry for her companion Veronica
❧ A country girl
❧ Like fairytale/ romantic

Advice
Weapons: Wands, Lances
Unique: Harpistry
Any Advice?
❧ Serena is the dedicated healer of the group, with unique and weapon skill categories to match. Harpistry offers abilities that protect against the elements and can be a lifesaver in later sections of the game.
❧ While you can give Serena a lance, specializing in Wands gives her more stats in Magical Mending, as well as the ability to equip a shield to make it less likely for her to get killed.
❧ Best early unlocks are Deliverance (Spears 7P) Heavy damage to undead enemies & Hymns (All elements, Harpistry 8P each) Increase party’s elemental resistance for a few rounds. A boss fight essential, even until late game.
Best Skills?
❧ Grace of the Goddess – Grace of the Goddess is a skill you’ll get in the latter half of the game on Serena’s Wands section. It has a chance of bringing her back to life if she dies in battle, which can be invaluable.
❧ Hymns – Basically all of Serena’s Harpistry section is made up of various Hymns, skills that lower elemental damage for the whole party. These are especially useful during boss battles that use specific spells.
❧ Divine Restitution – Found at the bottom of the Wands section, this powerful skill damages a group of enemies with powerful rays, while also giving Serena HP regeneration.
Appearance
Sylvando
❧ Sylvando is a flamboyant traveling performer who puts his talents to use in combat with a variety of different techniques and is capable of equipping whips, knives, and one-handed swords.
❧ He carries a long flute.
Personality
❧ Sylvando’s dream is to make people all around the world smile

Trivia
• Sylvando’s battle abilities can be seen as a male counterpart to Jessica Albert’s, being capable of using whips and some swords, as well as techniques similar in appearance to her Sex Appeal skills, such as Sexy Beam and Pink Typhoon.
• In the Japanese version of the game, Sylvando refers to himself using the pronoun “atashi” (あたし), which is typically only used by women but it can be used by feminine men. This trait is shared by feminine male characters in various pieces of Japanese media, including various anime, manga, and video games.

Advice
Weapons: Swords, Daggers, Whips
Unique: Showmanship, Litheness
Any Advice?
❧ Sylvando is a bit of an odd character.
❧ The performer naturally has a high Charm stat, so it’s best to work towards his Showmanship category so that he can gain skills that take advantage of that stat like Hustle Dance (a full part heal).
❧ Sylv also gains access to a few stat buffing spells, and he is beefy enough to take a few hits, which I found helpful as support during boss battles.
❧ Best early unlocks are Fuddle Dance (Showmanship 12P) Chance to confuse all enemies & Hustle Dance (Showmanship 14P) Restore 70+ HP to all party members.
❧ While I had Sylvando specialize in Whips, I personally don’t think that was the best move for this character, although he’s still powerful enough with the weapon type to get the job done.
❧ Swords may work better for him, even though he’ll sport some skillsets similar to the Hero.
Best Skills?
❧ Hustle Dance – At the bottom of the Showmanship section you can find this skill, which heals the entire party for a moderate amount. This skill is invaluable for having Sylvando function as a secondary healer/buffer.
❧ Dual-Wield – Just like Erik, Dual-Wield is incredibly useful for Sylvando as he can also use it for both knives and swords, with many of the same skills.
❧ That’s Amore – Right near Hustle Dance on Showmanship is That’s Amore, a powerful skill that has Sylvando launching a love attack at an enemy. This can cause big damage and is one of his most powerful abilities.
❧ Wyrm Whip – Another powerful ability just a bit into the Whips section. This lets Sylvando hit an enemy with three dragon strikes, causing huge damage. It can also be useful for taking down Metal Slimes.
Rab
❧ A mysterious elderly man who has been waiting for the Hero.
❧ Rab is a nimble fighter who wields a pair of claws.
❧ Despite his advanced age, he displays considerable abilities as a warrior and possesses mysterious powers.
❧ Hero’s grandfather & Lady Eleanor’s father
Personality
❧ Rab is an elderly gentleman & always seen carrying a large backpack.
❧ Although he looks like a simple traveler, his background and character are shrouded in mystery

Advice
Weapons: Heavy Wands, Claws
Unique: Enlightenment
Any Advice?
❧ Rab is the sage of the group–he is able to do a bit of everything, but a master of none. You can make Rab fit into a healer, wizard, or even physical damage-dealing role with a bit of tweaking, and thanks to his unique Enlightenment skill category, he’ll be able to gain stats in Magical Mending, Magical Might, and Strength.
❧ Best early unlocks are Right as Rain (Enlightenment 6P) Full party regenerates a small amount of HP every turn & Caster Sugar (Enlightenment 12P) Increase effectiveness of spells.
❧ For my playthrough, I made Rab my main healer, keeping him equipped with Heavy Wands and making sure that I grabbed the ability Zing Stick (guaranteed revival) and skill panels that upped MP and Magical Mending.
❧ Due to his well-rounded stats, he can take more hits than Serena and Veronica, but it comes with the trade-off of not being able to do as much damage or heal as well as the twins.
Best Skills?
❧ Right as Rain – Rab might not be quite as good as Serena at healing, but he’s certainly no slouch. One of the first skills on Enlightenment, Right as Rain gives you entire party health regeneration of 20 per turn. Super useful for hard battles and bosses.
❧ Caster Sugar – Right in the center of Enlightenment is Caster Sugar, an ability that increases the effectiveness of Rab’s spells. This will boost both offensive and healing spells.
❧ M-Pathy – Also on Enlightenment, M-Pathy lets Rab pass MP to another ally. He, by far, has the highest MP of any character, so it’s a good skill to have with Rab’s huge pool of mana.
❧ Rake and Break – On the left side of the Claws section is this skill, which damages enemies while also blowing away any positive effects on them.
✡ Jade
❧ An expert martial artist, she fights with her bare hands and carries a naginata, a type of polearm weap
❧ Jade is a tall and physically fit young woman.
❧ Jade’s flashing kicks are said to be unmatched in terms of power
❧ Hero’s older stepsister
❧ Adorable girl that carried Luminary/Hero when he was a baby running away from monster
Personality
❧ Her elegant beauty and dignified personality indicate that she may be more than just a skilled warrior.
❧ A female martial artist with a desire to protect everyone.
Strength
❧ Top physical damage-dealer
❧ Good in both normal battles and boss battles throughout the game
❧ Has single-target and multi-target Abilities
Weakness
❧ Only character in the game who does not learn any Spells or Abilities by gaining Levels
Story

Etymology
❧ Jade’s original Japanese name, Martina, is the feminine form of the Roman name Martinus. The name ultimately derives from Mars, the Roman god of war, and befits her role as a martial artist. ❧ Martina was a 3rd-century patron saint of the city of Rome.
❧ Her localized name, Jade, is derived from the ornamental stone of the same name, which is used in jewelry and artwork. It is also a shade of green, which fits as the majority of her outfit is colored green.
❧ Jade was greatly valued in Asian countries. Confucius believed that jade had properties encouraging bravery, honesty, and purity.

Advice
Weapons: Claws, Lances
Unique: Fisticuffs, Allure
Any Advice?
❧ Jade is essentially the monk of the group, but also has the addition of the series more ‘sexy’ moves like Puff-Puff and Sexy Beam with her Allure skillset.
❧ She’s a glass cannon, able to deal a lot of damage but not able to take much in return.
❧ Also, Jade can “specialize” in Fisticuffs (aka no weapon), but since the category is mainly a bunch of stat boosts, there’s no real reason not to have a weapon equipped to her.
❧ Best early unlocks are Hip Drop (Allure 6P) A fierce, non-elemental attack for low MP cost (Consistently useful) and Multithrust (Spears 12P) Unleash four random spear attacks on a group of enemies. Will also attack a single enemy 4x.
❧ Which weapon you decide is completely up to you. I preferred the Claws due to their high attack power and the double attack, but new Claws themselves are relatively rare and difficult to craft while Lances are more common and can eventually trump the Claws’ attack power.
Best Skills?
❧ Crushed Ice – In the spears section. A powerful attack that causes serious damage to one enemy with five icy strikes. Also very useful against Metal Slimes.
❧ Multithrust – In the spears section. Another multiple hit attack, only this one can hit a group of enemies. Hits four times.
❧ Miracle Moon – At the top of the Fisticuffs section. One of Jade’s very best abilities, as it strikes five enemies, at random, with kicks that’ll also restore her HP. Good damage and healing, so it’s a very useful skill.
❧ Hawkeye Claw – In the claws section. This is an unblockable attack that can slice through any enemy’s guard and causes a ton of damage.
Hendrik
❧ A general of the Kingdom of Heliodor with a strong sense of justice and loyalty to his lord
Personality
❧ Hendrik is known for his strong sense of duty and loyalty to his kingdom, and he is unrivaled in swordsmanship.
❧ He has defeated countless monsters in the service of his kingdom and is willing to lay down his life to protect his lord.
Strength
❧ Can survive the toughest fights in the game & able to absorb damage like a champ (tank).
❧ Strongest character in terms of Strength and Defence
❧ He has some devastating single-target options that rival what the Hero/Luminary and Jade are capable of
❧ A must to have in Boss fight
Weakness
❧ Low Agility means he is almost always going to act last in the round, sometimes even behind the enemies you are facing
❧ Limited MP pool
❧ Not good at clearing the field
❧ He has a multi-target option that uses a lot of MP
❧ Ok/Not good for normal fights

Advice
Weapons: Swords, Greatswords, Axes
Unique: Shields, Heroism
Any Advice?
❧ The eighth party member has a variety of skills you may have noticed missing from other characters in Dragon Quest XI.
❧ Hendrik is a knight through and through, with an impressive skillset and stat spread to match.
❧ He’s the only character that can learn skills with a Shield, and with moves like Forbearance (take any and every attack aimed at another member in their stead), using Hendrik effectively can turn the tide of difficult battles in your favor.
❧ However, in order to take full advantage of Hendrik’s defensive abilities, you’ll need to have a Shield equipped, which means sticking with a one-handed weapon.
❧ Some of Hendrik’s Heroism skills are only usable with a Sword as well, so it makes what weapon is best for the knight somewhat set.
❧ I did personally have Hendrik specialize in Greatswords for the higher damage output, but it makes him much harder to use as a tank.
Best Skills?
❧A Cut Above – In the middle of the Heroism section. This skill unleashes six blows on one enemy, causing massive damage. It’s also basically one of the most effective moves for taking down Metal Slimes.
❧Unbridled Blade – In the middle of the Greatswords section. This skill basically functions as a better version of Cutting Edge and can cause huge damage to a single enemy.
❧Helm Splitter – One of the very first skills in the Axe section. This skill causes decent damage while also being able to sap the enemy’s defense.
❧Double Up – At the top of Heroism section. As this character is hugely focused on attacking, Double Up is very useful as it significantly increases their attack while dropping their defense. Combined with powerful skills, it can be deadly.
