Overview
Easy Tutorial to get Quake 2 and Mission Packs working as “Vanilla” as possible, on a modern setup, with Original Music, Widescreen, Large FOV and Upscaled Textures.
Source Port
-Go to [link]
-Download the latest release (Currently 7.45), extract it, then paste the content of “quake2-7.45” in your “steamapps/common/Quake2” folder, this will replace existing files.
AI Upscaled Textures (Optional)
-Go to [link]
-Download the latest release, extract it, then paste the “.pkz” files into your “steamapps/common/Quake2/baseq2/” folder.
–RENAME THE “.pkz” FILES TO “.zip”, or else they will not be read.
Music
For whatever reason, the Music files are not included in the Steam release, here is the fix:
-Go to
.
-Download the “Quake 2 + Mission Packs Soundtrack”, extract it, then paste the “music” folder into your “steamapps/common/Quake2/baseq2/” folder.
Profit
-You can launch Quake 2 or the Mission Packs directly from your Steam Library.
-The first time they will launch at a low resolution, just go into the game settings, and set your native resolution.
-Set the video renderer to “OpenGL 1.4” if you want the game to use Upscaled Textures.
Setting it to “Software” will give you the “old” experience and a point of comparison.
-Anisotropic filtering and Multisampling are pretty much useless.
-I personnaly play without Vertical Synchronisation, the game automatically locks at 300FPS.
-The maximum FOV with the slider is 100.
-You only have to do your bindings, then profit.
Good Luck and Have Fun.
Advanced
There is a “.cfg” file for the base game and one for each Mission Pack (and they are not the same), they are placed into your “Users/Username/Documents” folder “in a “YamagiQ2” folder.
The ones in “steamapps/common/Quake 2” are the default files used by the game when you reset settings, avoid modifying these if you are not sure of what you are doing.
The “baseq2 subfolder is for the base game, the “rogue” one (no pun intended) is for Ground Zero and the “xatrix” one is for “The Reckoning”.
