EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair Guide

EDF in Vee-Aru A short guide.

Overview

I saw someone post in the discussion about how sweet this game would be in VR. I asked myself, ‘well, why not?’ so I took it upon myself to see if this could be VR worthy. Turns out it’s decent enough. It’s not Alien:Isolation ‘Mother’ amazing, but a good improvement over the base game. Also your radar, health bar, and ammo count will probably be obscured, but you don’t really care about those, right..?Anyways, this guide was made to help those who would like to play EDF 4.1 in 3D on the vive. No purchases necessary, except for the VIVE and game itself of course. This is done possible thanks to BlueSkyDefender, who created the Depth Map Based 3D post-process shader for Reshade.

Setup

1) Get Depth3D post process shader here[github.com].
2) Get ReShade 3.0 here[reshade.me].
3) Install ReShade 3.0, launch it, hit select game, and select your EDF executable, typically around ‘..SteamsteamappscommonEarth Defense Force 4.1EDF41.exe’
4) Select the Direct3D 10+ radio button (the middle one). I would recommend to not installing all of the shaders.
5) Set EDF launch option to use -SteamVR
6) In SteamVR, Disable DirectMode under the ‘Developer’ tab. Also feel free to crank up the Supersampling while you’re there.
7) open Depth3D extract the shaders folder into your EDF install folder
‘..SteamsteamappscommonEarth Defense Force 4.1’
8) Launch EDF, change the game to windowed mode (so that you may drag it over to your VIVE screen).
9) Once ReShade finishes loading, hit (Shift+F2) to bring open the menu.
10) Make a config, enable Smart_Sharp. If you don’t see them, go to the ReShade ‘Settings’ tab, and add the full path to the shaders folder where you extracted Depth3D.
I.E. ‘..SteamsteamappscommonEarth Defense Force 4.1Shaders’ and hit Reload at the bottom, then go back to ‘Home’ tab to see if it located it. If you’re pointing it to the folder with the Depth3D shader and it’s not picking up, try restarting from step 7?
11) Set a toggle key for Depth3D_Reprojection.
12) In the bottom window, if you’ve completed the ReShade tutorial, under Super Depth3D.fx
you will want to use the following settings:
Custom Depth Map: Depth Map 2
Depth map Adjustment: 18
Divergence Slider: 6
Weapon Depth Adjustment: 150 (you’ll have to double click and type this in). You can also use 300 or higher if you prefer the character to be not as 3D. If you would like ants to be more 3D, you’ll have to adjust Depth map adjustment, the Weapon Cutoff Point, and Weapon Depth Adjustment.
Weapon Depth Map: Weapon DM 0
Weapon Cutoff Point: 8 (This is right behind your guy, so it shouldn’t cause any unwanted 3D popping infront of your face).
Edge Selection: Mirrored Edges

Everything else should be default. After that you’re good to go.

13) Go to the ‘Settings’ tab, and select the ‘Performance Mode’ under the Usage Mode drop down list.
14) Turn on Depth3D_ReProjection with the hotkey you set in step 10.
15) Drag EDF window to the VIVE screen (extended by disabling Direct Mode).
16) Enjoy in VR.

Bonus:
17) Use one of these shaders with your game[sfx.thelazy.net]. I prefer this one[sfx.thelazy.net]. However, if you followed this guide, I recommended skipping the optional shaders in step 4 in order to reduce load times of unutilized shaders, so you will be unable to use those settings. You’ll have to grab the shaders by extracting to EDF again, or from elsewhere.
