Overview
This guide covers all the monsters one can find in their adventure through 1980s Czechoslovakia.
Disclaimer
Some enemies are unnamed by the developer, so I’ve taken liberty to give them unofficial names created by myself or the community. Those enemies are marked with a “*“. Also, I play on Very Hard, so the descriptions for enemies are written from that perspective. Lastly, this guide includes every enemy found in Episode 1 and the first level of Episode 2. More enemies will be added when more are introduced.
Common enemies
“Smaskou”
Smaskous are the first enemies found in the game, and also some of the weakest. They are humanoids clad in rags and gas masks, and wield what appears to be an AK-47. However, they only fire in semi-auto, and deal moderate damage. They can be killed quite easily, a single shotgun blast or a few swings from your trusty sickle will take them out. While they can easily be beaten alone, they often travel in groups which makes it a much tougher fight.
“Likvidator” *
Likvidators carry pump-action shotguns and are covered head-to-toe in a biohazard suit. Their shotgun packs quite a punch. If your health is low, they may kill you in a single shot. They are also quite fast moving, as well as very tough. They can take around four shotgun blasts to kill, and can be a very strong enemy when in close quarters.
“Krysa” *
Krysas are large rodents with glowing red eyes. They are very weak, and will die from a few hits of your pistol or a few swings from your sickle. The sickle, in particular, is quite a good weapon against them as their damage hitbox is larger than it first appears. Krysas only pose a problem when combined with other, stronger enemies, in tight spaces.
“SUP”
SUPs (Samostatný Útočící Pes – Standalone Attacking Dog) are feral dogs with splotches of blood covering their dark coat. While not extremely tough, they are quite agile, often utilizing a leap attack to maul the player. Their speed combined with their small frame makes them somewhat hard to hit, as well. Nonetheless, they are not very dangerous as long as one has a shotgun with a few shells.
“Kejdovec”
Kejdovecs are corpulent, slow-moving humanoids who wear what seems to be a ballistic vest and a hazardous materials suit which covers their body. They are also equipped with a black baton and a grenade launcher, which fires glowing red bouncing grenades. Their grenades detonate a few seconds after being fired, or if they touch another living thing. Kejdovecs’ batons aren’t very dangerous, as one has to be in hugging distance for them to use it. Their large frames also make them an easy target for shotgun blasts.
“Hornik”
Horniks are suicidal miners carrying barrels filled with an explosive substance. They appear to wear a white construction hat, as well as a gas mask and welder’s goggles. They can quickly be noticed through their distinct, high pitched noise that they let out when they see the player. Horniks should be considered a high priority target, as they are quick and deal heavy damage when exploding themselves. Though they are fast, they can easily be taken out with a few well-placed shotgun shells. They also explode on death, unless gibbed.
“Headsman”
Headsmen are thinly-built, robed humanoids who wear a dark brown bag over their head. They carry bardiche-like axes. They are quick on their feet, and lunge at the player at close range to deal moderate damage. They also come in a second variant, which carries the Hussite hand-cannon.
Thankfully, they don’t fire rockets and instead shoot a single bullet-sized projectile for below-average damage. Both variants can easily be killed with a single shot of the Hussite crossbow.
“Konfident”
Konfidents are ceiling-mounted turrets which rapidly lock on to the player when seen. They quickly shoot a steady barrage of bullets, but can easily be taken down due to their non-mobility. A burst from your submachine gun will do the job well.
“Bečva” *
Bečvas are ravenous fish found in the sewers of Czechoslovakia. Their brown bodies are shaped somewhat like a loaf of bread, and their mouths are lined with sharp teeth. Thankfully, they are not very fast, and can easily be taken down by a few pistol shots.
“Pedro”
Pedros are short, tan-colored creatures that aren’t too much trouble to defeat. They seem to resemble Bečvas that have grown legs, and act somewhat similar to them too. They can bite the player for heavy damage, and are able to spit a green substance which does moderate damage. A well-placed grenade or two can take out them out.
“Sekac”
Sekacs are terrifying, large spiders found mainly in the catacombs under castle Vyšehrad. They are recognizable by their red glowing eyes. When they spot the player, they quickly leap after them and deal moderate damage. While not extremely dangerous, they can definitely shock the player when they emerge from the shadows. They have very low health, so the submachine gun is a suitable weapon for squashing them.
“Hlava”
Hlavas are disembodied, pale, floating heads. There are metal pipes attached to the back of their bodies. Their attack consists of two pairs of yellow thorns, which briefly blinds the player upon contact. They also lead their shots in a way. Their first shot fires a thorn towards the player and to the right of the player, and their second shot fires a thorn towards the player and to the left of the player. This means the player must pay attention to the projectiles flying towards them instead of simply circle strafing around. Fortunately, they have a mediocre amount of health. Two close-range shotgun blasts is enough to kill one.
Rare enemies
“Semik”
Semiks are large, aggressive chestnut-colored horses which wear WW1 style gas masks. They are tough enemies, taking around seven shotgun hits to take down. They can deal out heavy damage as well, as their fast movement combined with constant leaping means they can maneuver around the battlefield with ease. Thankfully, they have no ranged attack, so laying into them with a shotgun or shooting rockets from a distance works well.
“Skapuci”
Skapucis are like an upgraded version of Smaskous. They have similar behavior to them, except they fire their assault rifles in bursts, and have the ability to teleport around the player. The teleport ability in particular can make them tricky foes to defeat, as they often will teleport behind you to flank your position. They are also slightly tougher than Smaskous, taking two or three shotgun blasts to die.
“Doggo Grande”
Doggo Grandes are brown bears with blood splattered on their muzzle. Once they are alerted, they relentlessly pursue at a swift pace, only slightly slower than the player’s run speed. Their singular attack, a bite with a one second windup animation, deals high damage. The best method to take one down is to run backwards while opening fire with the Brno shotgun. Just be sure not to be backed into a corner.
“White Lady”
The White Lady is a pale floating phantom who wears a medieval gown and headdress. She does not spawn normally, only appearing once the player interacts with a portrait of her. Once spawned, she appears with a flash of lightning and starts conjuring fireballs to shoot at the player. These fireballs deal high damage, but can be easily dodged by strafing. A good way to take her out is to simply run close and shoot her with the Brno shotgun, step back and strafe, and repeat. It will take two or three close-range hits from the Brno to take her down.
“Bulldozer” *
Bulldozers are yellow-painted construction equipment which seemingly have a mind of their own. Once the player gets too close, they spring to life and attempt to ram the player, dealing heavy damage. They are somewhat slow when they aren’t charging the player, so throwing a few grenades their way will easily put an end to them.
“Choppa” *
Choppas are brown military helicopters equipped with machine guns. They constantly attack the player with a hail of bullets, and sway through the air to switch positions. To dodge their attacks, constantly run around, as they are not able to lead their shots. Hitting them with around six rockets will send them down in flames.
Bosses
“Kong” *
Kong is the boss of E1M2, Luna. He appears to be a large gorilla with rocket launchers grafted to both arms. Kong is very tanky and lethal. An unwary player can be dispatched in seconds if they are not constantly strafing around to avoid Kong’s rockets and lunge attack. This boss is best dispatched with a mix of shotgun shells and rockets.
“Goat”
Goat is the boss of E1M4, Sokol Gymnasium. It appears to be a possessed pommel horse, which hops around the basketball court and shoots rockets. It functions similarly to Kong, except that it only fires one rocket at a time instead of two. It seems to be faster than Kong though, often taking less pauses during the fight and instead constantly lunging after the player.
“Shial” *
Shial is the boss of E1M7, Underground Stream. It is a large spider, around three times the size of regular Sekacs. It moves around sluggishly and spits balls of acid, similar to Pedros except it shoots three at a time. This is perhaps the easiest boss in the game, as the player can simply circle strafe around its’ small arena and chuck grenades at it. Surprisingly, it has no leap attack either.
“Gottwald”
Gottwald is the final boss of Episode 1, found in E1M8, Mausoleum. He is the reanimated corpse of Klement Gottwald, a Czech politician. Perhaps his most noticeable feature is his lower half, which has seemingly mutated into having four spider-like legs. His arms have succumbed to this mutation as well, turning into sharpened points. He attacks by jumping around and shooting out circular saws at random, in a radius around him. His saws do heavy damage, taking down around a third of the players health with each hit. A solution to this is to constantly attack him with heavy weaponry. Hussite hand-cannon, lightning gun, Brno super shotgun, each is suitable. Throw absolutely everything at him. Strafe around him and jump wildly to dodge his saws, and you will survive.
“Vozová Hradba Trio” *
The Vozová Hradba Trio serves as the boss of E2M1, Točník Castle. They are a group of three medieval Hussite war wagons which fire a barrage of projectiles at the player from stationary positions. Though their shots can deal high damage, they are easily dodged by simply side strafing or taking cover behind something solid. The most effective weapon against them is the Hussite hand-cannon, followed by the Brno super shotgun. Beware that as each wagon is destroyed, either a Kejdovec or a group of Kats will emerge from the wreckage.
