Overview
Are you sick of searching endlessly on Google? Desperatetly looking at forums and Yahoo Answers? Well search no more because i’m here to tell you how to run Fallout 3 on Windows 8! I will advise to you all to read this carefully and please identify your issue before you attempt any of these fixes, since some of these fixes will cause more problems if you don’t identify the problem that you are specifically looking for. And please read the entire guide before you try to fix the game. I will not be held responsible for your actions to your game, your attempts on your game are your own.This may or may not work for those who have Windows 10. Those with Windows 10 could install Microsoft Live and go from there. This only applies to those who have Windows 8, 8.1, 7 and Vista.
New Game and System Issues
Has your game been freezing on Startup or freezing during the game? Well fear no more!
Alrighty here’s what you’ll need and please read this carefully:
– The Latest Windows Live (since the one that comes with Fallout 3 is not compatible with Windows 8)
Before Installing the updated Windows Live, Validate your File Cache, then install the latest Windows Live and poof your game is ready to go!

Oh and if your using a CD version, you’ll need to update it heres the link: Fallout 3 CD Update[download.zenimax.com]
To fix your game when you try to play a new game please try downloading a fresh d3d9.dll file. This should help out those who can’t start up on a new game. To install this follow the steps provided:
1. Open program files(x86)
2. go to Steam
3. go to Steam apps
4. go to Common
5. then go to Fallout 3
6. Only place the d3d9.dll file in the general folder not that other Fallout3 folder.
Then poof! Your game should be able to play perfectly and hopefully no crashes!

If there are more issues try playing the game on compatibility mode, basically go to the Fallout 3 folder find the .exe file, right click, click on properties, here you’ll find many tabs, click on the compatibility tab, and and click on Windows XP (try all but firstly go for Service Pack 3) if Windows XP doesn’t work go for Vista. Also run as Admin when your done!
If you have the ‘ordinal 42 is missing’ issue please follow these steps:
1. Make sure you installed the latest Windows Live
2. Follow the .dll file step above
3. Download and install this [link] to install this go to My Documents, My Games and Fallout3 and replace the FALLOUT.ini file with it.

Launcher and Minimisation Issues
The FALLOUT.ini file might need to be altered in some way or something, so heres what i found:
For XP:
My DocumentsMy GamesFallout3
For Vista & Win7/8:
DocumentsMy GamesFallout3
The file you want will be called:
FALLOUT.ini or the thing that says FALLOUT
Open the .ini with Notepad & change this line:
bUseThreadedAI=0 to: bUseThreadedAI=1
& insert this line under it:
iNumHWThreads=2
Save & close your ini.
If problems persist, find the .dll file and remove it, since it ONLY helps out those who cannot start a new game.
Now if you can play the game but it minimises the game, i’d advise you to follow these commands:
Go to the Steam Library, find Fallout 3, right click it, go to Properties, go to General then click on Set Launch Options, here put in this code:
-fullscreen
or
-full
This would force the engine to start in fullscreen mode
or try resetting it from the game launcher. Click on Windowed mode, then launch the game. Then check in-game settings. Exit the game, launch the launcher again, go back into settings, uncheck Windowed mode. Save exit. Re-launch the game, see if that helps.
or try and open the Fallout launcher and click options, look in the bottom left of the options window under “Mode” is the windowed box ticked? If so untick it.
or the good old ALT TAB

Conclusion
If all else fails please go to the Game folder in the Steam directory and run as Admin or get a Software update for your graphics card and Prosessor or buy new ones. Or try un-installing Windows Live, that can work too.
Now, if those don’t work, follow these steps:
1. Remove the D3d9.dll file
2. Make sure you’ve installed the latest Windows Live
3. Verify your Game Cache
4. Go to your Fallout 3 folder
5. Find the Fallout.exe and FalloutLauncher.exe
6. Fiddle around with the compatibility settings for either both or just one
7. Make sure to run the program as Administrator (i.e Run as Admin)
8. If these fail to improve, put the D3d9.dll file into the folder again and run the game as a Non-Steam Game.
