FINAL FANTASY VI Guide

Final Fantasy VI's Default PC Controls for FINAL FANTASY VI

Final Fantasy VI’s Default PC Controls

Overview

A quick and easy reference guide for the default controls in the PC/Steam version of Final Fantasy VI.

Introduction

Quite a few times playing this version of the game I’ve found myself needing a specific control and totally confused about what it could possibly be, frantically tapping miscellanous keys and freaking my computer out, and unable to open the FF6 launcher whilst playing the actual game – so it’s for this reason that I decided to make an easy-to-reference guide listing all the controls.

Keyboard Controls

Here are the default keyboard controls, taken from the launcher’s manual.

esc
open main menu (outside of battles), switch targeting type (enemy/ally)
left shift
zoom in/out of map, browse party members in menu (not battle), toggle targets (one/all), switch to another party (on multiple party missions)
x
toggle auto-battle (on/off), switch targetting type (enemy/ally), open mission objective
space
pause (battle only)
backspace
back/previous screen, get off chocobo/airship, toggle sprint (on/off)
enter
confirm (menus), talk, search, interact, get on airship, advance airship
right shift
toggle run away from battle (when not on target selection), allow airship to strafe (hold), toggle auto-battle (on/off), switch targeting type (enemy/ally), open mission objective, browse party members in menu (not battle), toggle targets (one/all), switch to another party (on multiple party missions)
arrow keys
movement, menu navigation, blitz sequences

Controller Defaults

Here are the default controller settings (I used the diagram from the manual PDF for this so that you can easily see the layout of the controls).

Control Remapping Tip

Just an extra note: If you are remapping controls, avoid changing ‘enter’ to a letter/number/symbol key, because if you do this, every time you confirm a character name it will always add the mapped letter/number/symbol to the end of the name.

That’s how I ended up playing the entire game with Terra named “Terraa”. Don’t be like me.

Happy playing!
