Overview
How to avoid start-up crashes on Win10, install patches and play at high resolutions, including widescreen support.
Necessary patches
Ok, I spent some time and it seems the information is out there, but scattered and not clear to many people. Took me a while as well:
From here:
[link]
-Patch the game to 1.05,
-Then install a NO-CD fix from Game Copy World or any other source you want
(I uploaded the fix from GCW to filedropper [link] )(dead link, working files below)
Just paste it into the game folder and replace the rtc.exe file
From here:

-Install 1.06 patch (same file as hawkdawg page, but no need to register/login)
After all that, apply the Vista patch (on hawkdawg page)
EDIT: ALL THE FILES IN ONE PACKAGE:
Two mirrors (same packages):

2) [link]
3) Patch 1.06 correct installer: [link]
Please let me know if you know a better file host though.
Resolution
I play at 2560×1440. How?
-Use this tool to change resolution to any you desire:

EDIT:
Someone had issue with the link above, so I uploaded the file to FileDropper:

/EDIT.
The tool is simple to use, just point it to the file at the place your game is installed
( SteamLibrarysteamappscommonRailroad Tycoon 3 )
Type in any supported resolution.
FPS cap (save your GPU from meltdown)
For the FPS (game renders over 2000 framers per second, unnecessary strain, it’s bad)
Use nvidia inspector (AMD must have it’s own tool, google it):

Run it, click wrench and screwdriver icon on Driver Version,
Find Railroad Tycoon 3 from the list and under Sync and Refresh, choose Frame Rate Limiter.
I used 120 fps. I did try to force Triple buffering and Vertical Sync as well, but that didn’t seem to work.
The very reason I even recommend doing that, is because my 1080 was pretty loud playing this game in the menus… Capping the frames fixed that.
